I think the roller coaster one was funny. 😃
I thought that one was funny, too.

Helpful hint: precede any pregnancy announcement with “We’re so happy and excited!!!” or “Herbert and I have WONDERUL news!!!” That way people have appropriate cues as how to react to your news.

We’ve heard, “So who is getting fixed after this one, you or your husband?” quite a few times, almost always by Catholics. I think the worst one last time was, “Oh, my God. You’re not serious, are you?” That person still can’t figure out why we didn’t ask them or their spouse to be godparents.

Well not to derail the thread but I could come up with a big list of things Catholics have said to us because we STILL had no children. Goes both ways unfortunately. Sometimes though with us it’s the “devout” Catholics who were the rudest.

Now that the Super Bowl is coming up, there is a running joke about Chargers QB Philip Rivers. He has 7 children…and all by the same woman!

We were seriously asked that by a nurse with our seventh. “Seven pregnancies… wow, are they all his?” (I was sitting right there and not terribly pleased).

Uh, I feel for you. Horrid comments…and some of the worst my MIL! Fertility related jokes which really were not very funny and threw me into a horrible depression. God bless you. The pain is unreal.

How…I have no words that are suitable for this board! I will pray for your diaconate! How wonderful! And I love the +Chaput quote. He confirmed our son. What a joyous day!

I’ve only gotten one really weird comment and it was with my first. I told my ex-aunt (used to be married to my biological uncle) who I hadn’t seen in years in a parking lot. She said, “Wow! What did you mom have to say about that?”

When I became pregnant (after years of horrible surgeries for my DH), my MIL says, “What a waste of a Notre Dame education.”

Doncha just love MIL doozies?

We were asked if we had a tv in our bedroom.

Also got the “but you already have a boy and a girl” comment.

Yeah it is. Especially now with the total hysterectomy at 33. Thankfully my family has been very supportive. Now my parish however…

Sorry you have to go through this too! :console:

“You’d rather watch TV than have sex? You’re doing it wrong!”

😃

I am so sorry to hear this. We were about to conceive in a narrow window after DH had a 12 hour long surgery. You were given a very heavy cross. I will offer your intentions in my prayers. God bless you.

I would like to chime in as a former fallen away Catholic and total ignorant slob. I would have been one of the buffoons that would have made a dorky comment. Probably not a comment about getting tubes tied but I would have said something rude like “whoa baby you’ve got your hands full already don’t you?” then laughed.

Sadly, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to say “congratulations”, looking back I carry shame. Praise God I was blessed with grace and was able to conceive many children of my own!

I share this only because having been on the other side, I urge KINDNESS when and if dealing with people like this. If someone had smiled kindly at me and said “We really are very happy!” and smiled at me I hope it would have drawn me in, or at least planted a small seed. Sometimes happiness is contagious. I think that would have been better than someone telling me off. Man I was blind, wow.
Thank you for this reminder. Sometimes we may overreact to someone’s attempted humor (even if it doesn’t seem like humor). Sometimes it maybe someone who doesn’t know better. Or perhaps it is someone trying to make us upset to make us look bad or at least to make us feel wrong. Our reaction may help bring about a conversion in time.
