A tale of God’s grace. In 1985, before I was even baptized, DW and I visited Lourdes. She “suggested” that I cross myself with water from the grotto, so I did. I read a sign nearby relating to Saint Bernadette washing her face in the water and it brought tears. A few days later, we “happened” to encounter Pope Saint John Paul II’s motorcade in Genoa where, as part of the crowd, we received his Apostolic blessing. The next year, I was in RCIA.

Fast forward 23 years. I developed a rare and aggressive lymphoma (PTCL-NOS), diagnosed at Stage IV, and with 50+ tumors. After treatment for several years, it relapsed (24+ tumors) and part of it also mutated into Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma, both of which were highly chemotherapy resistant. At the same time, I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a bone marrow cancer caused by numerous treatments (18 chemotherapy drugs + total body irradiation). I underwent a stem cell transplant (10-30% mortality rate) and developed rejection issues known as graft-versus-host-disease (40-60% mortality rate at 2 years).

While on immune suppression drugs to control the rejection issues, I developed type II diabetes and hypertension. Currently, I am fighting a Rhino virus, Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and pneumonia. There is maybe a 1-2% chance of my being alive at this point.

A 1-2% chance until I recall that Saint Bernadette is the patron of bodily illness. So, I embrace my suffering and seek to find joy in it, inasmuch as I want to meet my patron.
