NEW YORK - The Board of Health voted Tuesday to make New York the nation’s first city to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants — from the corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.

The board, which passed the ban unanimously, did give restaurants a slight break by relaxing what had been considered a tight deadline for compliance. Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008.*

Curious to hear what others think of this. Should this ban occur nation-wide or in your place of residence? Will this lead to bans on other food? Is this a violation of rights?

(another food ban example, although for different reasons, is foie gras, banned in Chicago cbsnews.com/stories/2006/04/27/national/main1550028.shtml )

Technically speaking, there are no natural trans-fats–trans-fats are unsaturated fats that are artificially saturated to make them keep longer.

Margarine was the first trans-fat.

I could see banning trans-fats, but only if they replace them with saturated fat, since you can’t get the same kind of fry from unsaturated. And the health fascists wouldn’t stand for that.
