Rather you than me. I tried them once and was almost sick. I was living in France at the time and contrary to popular opinion not all Frenchmen like them, either.

Yeah. The one time I had gator I wasn’t very impressed. Very gamey…

The story I heard about muskrat, which was allowed in Michigan quite a while ago, was that the Bishop when asked if muskrat was allowed because it swam answered that if a person could stand the taste of muskrat they could eat it during Lent. Maybe he thought it was a good penitential practice.
That was actually a quip that Bishop Povish of the Diocese of Lansing made in the 1980’s. The muskrat dispensation exists in the Diocese of Detroit from the 1700’s, when it was given due to the limited food sources late in the long hard winters that the area sees. I’ve been told that it’s rather like duck (among other things), and after 25 years living up here I hope to FINALLY get to try it next month. There’s a muskrat dinner at one of the downriver ecclesial communities in late March.
I think I’ll pass. I’ve always wanted to try squirrel, but in the US, wild game meat cannot legally be sold (there might be exceptions), so I would either have to hunt it myself, or get someone to do it for me. Even if I hunted my own squirrel, I’ve watched videos, and I don’t think I could clean it.

To the point, I know the Church has historically dispensed from the stricter interpretations of Friday and Lenten abstinence in poor or remote areas where foodstuffs are limited, or where, as you point out, conditions make it necessary. If I am not mistaken, the faithful were dispensed from Friday abstinence during World War II, though if my sensus catholicus is working correctly when looking at people of that era, they probably went ahead and observed Friday abstinence if it were remotely possible to do so. Nowadays, people would be kicking up their heels and rejoicing at the prospect of eating meat!

What about meal replacement/supplement drinks, like Boost or Ensure?

Just making a decision for myself, I would say those are OK. I keep Atkins chocolate drinks in the refrigerator in case I need them for a quick sugar boost. They are more medicinal nutrition than they are “food”, just made to resemble a light milk beverage.

I would probably draw the line at getting a milkshake and allowing it to melt so that it is liquid ice cream mixed with milk. That said, I do not think that Our Lord or His Church want us to nitpick ourselves to death over such things. I would say to do what you think is right and what you feel comfortable with. I am very much a “rules and regulations” person, but I always try to remain mindful that it’s not all about the rules and regulations, where human law (as opposed to divine law) is concerned.

One’s walk with the Lord shouldn’t be reduced to how thick your milkshake is.

Only if they’re served in garlic and drawn butter…

I’ve never had the pleasure. I just have one question — are they still slimy when they’re served? If so, sorry, no se puede. Even if they’re not, I would have an issue with, ahem, the mud vein.
No, they’re not slimy. They’re cleaned before they’re cooked.

They’re just rubbery.
I didn’t hate them but I can live the rest of my life without them as well! 😂
I used to buy cans of them and make a lunch of a can of snails in garlic butter with fresh bread. Unfortunately I don’t digest fat as easily now as I once did. Haven’t had snails in a long time.

A bit but more rubbery than clams. I’m not a fan of clams either…except in soups. ❤️
