Ash Wednesday is coming up. Was curious if ya’ll leave your ashes on your foreheads all throughout the day…and what do you plan on giving up this Lenten season :D:cool: 👍

Pax Christi!

The ashes stay until they come off by themselves.

Caffeine and game apps.

God bless.

In past years, I’ve taken time off work to go to Mass, and I’ve come back to work with the ashes on my forehead, and wore them for the rest of the day.

This year, my parish priest is organising an Ash Wednesday vigil mass on Tuesday evening, which I’ll attend.

God Love You. Blessings this Lent.

I remember back in school we used to all try and see whose ashes would stay on their forehead the entire day 😃

Then when I started working I had to miss Ash Wednesday masses and it has been that way ever since… However, because I am not currently working I will be going to a mass at my parish and there will be school children participating too. Looking forward to it as I haven’t been to an Ash Wednesday service in a long time!

Oh and I will be going out afterwards to meet up with someone. I think I’ll leave my ashes on my forehead. Then if someone questions me I can tell them what they’re there for 😉

Lenten Ashes are a reminder for all of us. I wear them all day while I work in my office where a good many local people come to call. I look forward to the opportunity to explain the ashes and the season of Lent leading up to the celebration of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. I follow the strict fasting for the entire Lenten period, eliminating all snacks of any kind. Believe me this is a wonderful exercise in self denial and emptying myself to better hear what the Lord is saying to me. I contribute the money I would be spending on snacks each day to the Rice Bowl program of Catholic Relief Services. I commit myself to attending the Stations of the Cross each Friday after work. Lent is an opportunity to focus on the wonder and beauty of our faith and the love and mercy of Jesus.

I leave them on all day until my shower before bed. I give up chocolate.

When I have gone to an earlier Mass I left them on all day, but The Mister and I will be going to the 5:30 Mass when he gets off work, so the evening will have to do. This is his first Lenten season as he is currently in RCIA and is jonesin’ for the Easter Vigil.

I am giving up red meat. While I do appreciate the sacrificial nature of giving up something, I love more the idea of doing something that will greatly enhance my spiritual life and draw me nearer to my Savior. So I will pray the rosary daily and read only Catholic material and the Sacred Scriptures. I absolutely love the Lenten season.

It is worth remembering that we “wear” our ashes for the right reasons. The scripture reasons for Ash Wednesday are pretty clear:

*And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. *

Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

So don’t wear your ashes proudly, but make sure you wear them…and wear them humbly.

I really don’t know what to give up yet…😊
I’ve batted a few things back and forth.

But I’ve had a couple of house related catastrophes in the past couple of weeks, so giving something up might be too much. I have already given up a lot.

I am looking for something to add to my life. Prayers, spiritual reading or Bible readings are being considered.

I also leave mine on until they wear off and I’m giving up beer.

I do try to wear my ashes all day, but my skin is pretty oily on my forehead, so they don’t tend to stick around very long. 😉

It used to be pretty common before Vatican II, but I don’t see it much these days; though, I do see some Catholics wearing their ashes the entire day.

No, because the priest in our parish doesn’t put ashes on our forehead. He does it like they do in Poland, which is to sprinkle ashes on top of your head (yes on your hair) and not traced with a cross on the forehead.

That’s interesting. The priest at my new parish is Polish (just came to the States a few months ago). I wonder if he’ll do the same thing…

hello.my name is vamsi.why we greet’happy ash wednesday"why happy is it

Giving up internet at home except email. I only use a few websites regularly so I’ve just blocked them all.
Giving up junk food (in fact I’m off to McDonald’s for a treat to celebrate fat tuesday, as I missed the opportunity today :D)
Giving up warm shower water
Also I’ve set up a schedule to read through Life of Christ by Fulton Sheen and the 1st volume of Warren Carroll’s History of Christendom (which seems excellent so far!) during the period.

Pax Vobiscum
