The protestant ministers use the name of Jesus and don’t hesitate. And Paula White even invoked the Father, Son and Spirit.

And the Archbishop of New York crosses himself silently, says a OT prayer and then says “Amen”

If I didn’t see the uniform, I wouldn’t know if I was listening to a Christian man or a unitarian.

IMO we will answer for political correctness at the judgment.
And why should he not use a prayer from the Old Testament. The prayer was about asking for wisdom as I remember. Seemed appropriate.

Well I thought Cardinal Dolan chose the right words from scripture…the other two sounded like they were preaching an invocation prayer to anoint a religious leader rather than a politician
👍

I didn’t know we were allowed to start a Cardinal bashing thread, especially that line about having to answer to this in the final judgment.

The Cardinal Archbishop and the President are neighbors. Live on the same street [more or less] [Fifth Avenue?]. Maybe even are co-parishoners. Maybe run into one another at Starbucks or when walking around.

Wow.
The Arch-Bishop is worthy of respect out of the dignity of his office.

Cardinal Dolan’s invocation was a paraphase of the prayer of Solomon in the Old Testament asking God for wisdom to govern the people “in holiness and righeousness…” and in my opinion is most appropriate for the inauguration of our new President. What an uncharitable post to criticize Cardinal Dolan over this beautiful invocation.

Wisdom, chapter 9 usccb website

**Cardinal Dolan’s invocation prayer:
**
God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy,
you who have made all things
And in your providence have charged us
to rule the creatures produced by you,
To govern the world in holiness and righteousness,
and to render judgment with integrity of heart:
Give us Wisdom, for we are your servants,
weak and short-lived and lacking
in comprehension of judgment and of laws.
Indeed, though one be perfect among mortals,
if Wisdom, which comes from you, be lacking,
we count for nothing.
Now with you is Wisdom, who knows your will
and was there when you made the world;
Who understands what is pleasing in your eyes
and what is conformable with your commands.
Send her forth from your holy heavens
from your glorious throne dispatch her
That she may be with us and work with us,
that we may grasp what is pleasing to you.
For she knows and understands all things,
and will guide us prudently in our affairs
and safeguard us by her glory. Amen.
When I saw this thread I wondered why Cardinal Dolan had participated in the inaugural ceremony, but then realized they probably needed a Catholic and who better than a NYC Catholic, where Trump’s home is.

The prayer he said is a great prayer for all gov leaders.

At first I thought that this thread would have been quickly locked for violating the forum rules, but I can see the reasoning for keeping it open. In today’s Church when many bishops, cardinals, and even the Pope have made strange or confusing statements in the media about numerous issues, it has become more difficult to know if you are hearing orthodox statements or teachings from even the highest ranking clergy in the Church. Over the past several years we have seen clergy feuding in the press and providing radically different viewpoints over the recent synod, interpretations of AL, immigration, the role of conscience, and other issues. I think the days are gone where you could take for granted that you are hearing authentic teaching from each and every bishop in the Church. Now, between the distortions of the media and the questionable statements that are being made by many high ranking clergy in the Church, it is prudent to be cautious in taking any statements at face value, no matter who the speaker is. Even this website has posted an article calling out the bishops of Malta for their dangerous guidelines on AL that bring scandal to the Church. I cannot speak for the ownership of this site and can only speculate, but perhaps they realize that a tipping point has been reached and that the faithful must speak out against the confusion and distortions of doctrine that have arisen in the Church over the last several years.

I do not mean this to be a criticism of Cardinal Dolan (I thought he did a fine job with his prayer) but rather just an observation of the current situation. It pays to be cautious during times like these.

👍

It’s frustrating that some of these threads are allowed to fester like a septic wound (especially those that involve whiny criticism of the Pope / Cardinals). Either implement a strict policy of banning all such threads, or permit a free-for-all and let the Devil take the hindmost. 😛

4 pages and the OP hasn’t replied (I don’t blame them) this thread is beginning to feel more like ‘kicking while they’re down’. 😦

God Bless

Thank you for reading

I’ve reported the opening post twice now. I am charitably assuming that the moderator is away, is overly busy or simply missed the report. It happens. They’re human too.

But I do agree with you that this thread is a festering wound.
