Ask A Baptist Pastor

OOH, OOH, pick me, pick me! I have a question for a Baptist Pastor!

Actually, I have three:

I saw on your OP that you are Southern Baptist, so here goes:
  1. The Southern Baptist Convention officially declared that not all Southern Baptists are Christians. Does your own convention consider you to be a Christian?
  2. Baptists believe they are guided by the Holy Spirit in their personal interpretation of the Bible. At one time, the Baptist church condemned contraception, but later changed and now allow contraception. Was the Holy Spirit guiding you before, or after, this change?
  3. The Southern Baptist Convention officially declared that abortion was not only allowable in some circumstances, but that Southern Baptists should seek legislation to allow abortions in some circumstances. Do you agree with your church’s official teaching on this matter?
Oops, wait, I have four:
  1. The Southern Baptist Convention in its resolution on divorce and remarriage officially declared that Baptist ministers should not solemnify a marriage where one party had been divorced for other than Scriptural reasons. Do you follow this teaching, and if so, what are the Scriptural reasons you would use to refuse a wedding?
I know, technically that was five…

As we can see, this protestant “minister” brings nothing new to the discussion. The same questions and “observations” have come to these fora time after time, and have been explained and expounded in the same way. These protestants are like the good 'ol dog who wants you to play ball with him. He understands the “ballness” of the ball, but when you attempt to teach him the nature and attributes of the ball, he looses interest. The throwing and catching of the ball is what is important to him. But, we keep throwing the ball back to him and he retrieves it. Nobody’s mind is substantially changed, but the protestant usually goes off with some sense of “victory” at having “shown those Catholics some real biblical scholarship.” Not believing that some half-taught protestant “preacher” on the internet is an intellectual pygmy, in comparison with the scholars and Doctors of a Church that has had 2000 years of time to reflect on the questions that so vex protestants. But, let’s keep throwing the ball. and see how long that they can be induced to bring it back.

This thread is amazing! I honestly have learned so much from both sides, and now I know why I am Catholic!! Thank you for this amazing thread!
I agree with you… I have also a learned great deal on this thread. 👍

Great posts by everyone and many thanks…

Matthew

reformissionary,

How 'bout some answers on Post #457?

Can anyone here have fun? Goodness sakes.
The “to be deep in history…” quote was from Cardinal Newman, a convert to Catholicism. You might not have known that being new to this forum. As one who was a student of history he was making a serious statement about his journey with that quote, and it gets used quite frequently around this forum.

For my part, I understood your comments from the opening, to be serious on your part. Am I wrong?

That one wasn’t.

reformissionary,
I can understand why you would be uncomfortable in answering Post #457, but do try, won’t you? Spiritual gymnastics are a protestant forte.

Please refrain from whining when you stick your head up and get shot.
He started this thread with zeal to show us dopey catholics what it’s all about and now finds himself digging a hole.
I also would like to hear a response to post 457. It should be entertaining to say the least.

Matthew

If we’re voting, I would also like to see an answer to post 457, right along with numerous others he hasn’t answered.

I asked him quite a while back if he did his seminary online, but never got an answer…hmm:shrug:

We’ll see. 😉

I don’t know where we “officially declared” that. But it’s true that not all SB are Christians. Not all Catholics are Christians. Christians have regenerate hearts. We can’t see that but by fruit and sometimes we mistake other things for fruit. Only God can see the heart.
  1. Baptists believe they are guided by the Holy Spirit in their personal interpretation of the Bible. At one time, the Baptist church condemned contraception, but later changed and now allow contraception. Was the Holy Spirit guiding you before, or after, this change?
Where do Baptists say anything about their “personal interpretation of the Bible?” I’d like to see it. Since you say it, I assume you have a place where you’ve seen that. Thanks.

Where does the Baptist church condemn contraception? When did that change and who changed it?

We don’t consider that we will infallibly do anything. Never have claimed to. Holy Spirit is guiding us all along, but, you know, even Christians can be dull of hearing.

Where have we declared that officially?

I believe abortion is always wrong. My church believes that. All the SB churches I know believe that. Some, probably not.
Oops, wait, I have four:
See! I knew you were lying before. 😉

Where is that resolution made?

Where are the Scriptural reasons to DO a wedding?

The SB Convention NEVER, EVER has or can declare anything authoritative toward a local congregation. So none of these ultimately matter. It either means a committee or board has said something or that a majority of messengers at a yearly convention vote for something. None of those are binding.

Self-control is from the Holy Spirit. 2 Tim 1:7 😃

Boys,
I have seen many protestant boats wrecked upon the Rock of Peter.😉

I’m headed out for a date with my lovely wife and then watching the Blackhawks take game 4. Have fun. Try to spend an equal amount of time answering my posts as you do congratulating each other on your superiority. 😛

Steve, its has been a couple of really fun days for you, right. You came on a Catholic forum, riled up some of the posters here, kept a thread going for a few days, been sarcastic and called it a sense of humor, pompous and called yourself led by the Holy Spirit and on and on. I’m disgusted by you.

My dad, who is now 85 and suffers from Alzheimers is a southern baptist minister. He always in everything showed the love of Jesus Christ. In all of his actions Jesus was visible. As I have read and agonized over the flippant way in which you have responded to sincere Catholics who always try to truthfully answer all the folks who come on this forum asking questions, I can’t imagine that you represent the same group of christians as my dad.

I am not interested enough in you to look at your profile, so I don’t know how old you are, but I suspect you are under middle age. Things seem so black and white before we have had the opportunity to suffer through many of the sufferings that come our way as we age. I know that in my case, I was so sure that the baptist teachings had to be right, but when the Lord allowed my life to be turned upside down, I came home to the Catholic Church.

I would ask only that you realize that all these good people who have spent so much time on a dead end trip, are reaching out to you due their love of God. Each one of them loves Jesus through His church and are just trying to answer whatever questions you have.
My prayer for you is that you would be like my dad. Every person, no mater religion or race, count it as a blessing to have crossed paths with him. Yearn for holiness. Don’t yearn to convert true God fearing Catholics to anything. God bless you and your family.

In Christ,
Stan

Oh and by the way, I hope the Blackhawks win too.

We’ll see. 😉

That is much more of a mormon answer than anything. You actually answered nothing. All I see are weasel-words that answer questions with questions. This merely points up the fact that protestants excuse much by protesting that they have no central authority, that each “church” governs themselves. Yet, the Southern Baptist Convention claims authority to determine who is Christian and who is not. Protestantism is a camel, that is: a horse designed by a committee. The Holy Spirit does not guide by committee, therefore, your guidance come from some other source. I leave it to you to figure out where. Hint: He is the Prince of this world.

Have a good time. You are clearly out of your league here, a few more years in the minors may help you move up, but some are stuck in the bush leagues forever. “You worship God the way that you want to, we will worship God the way He wants us to.”
Keep working, real humility and searching may one day bring you home to the True Church, founded by Jesus Christ Himself.
