Besides, every Protestant I know will admit that Catholics are right on some doctrinal issues.

He died, Also Before Calvin of whom you mentioned, How can a protestant quote a Catholic theologian, and agree with his thesis,and yet believe different from the Catholic theoligian. I could not quote a protestant theologian to agree with,and then have a different belief system other than the one he taught. I just find that to be a double standard., unless I quoted him to debate him. But I dont find Protestants debating Augustine Catholic theologians, just borrowing from their teaching to prove theirs, but if Augustine were living he would probably have a fit, knowing others outside his faith were quoting him in heretical circles.

many catholic theologians have used “quotes” from other belief systems to back up their own claims. augustine was a complete platonist. he quoted plato constantly. yet, he wasn’t debating plato, he was fitting plato into Christianity. i can quote augustine and completely agree with him on many points and still disagree with him on others. i don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water.

No, it’s not because we don’t acknowledge the authority of the Catholic Church so we are NOT asking the Catholic Church to raise us (to stick with your analogy). I’m not telling the Catholic Church anything!

We do have the (God given) ability to study and learn from the Church fathers or even the leadership of the Catholic Church today. Why shouldn’t we? Why does that trouble you?

**I would ask and encourage you to research the early Church fathers, You will find for the 2 millineum They were all Catholic, and their teachings have not changed today.

By the way Augustine was way before Calvin was born, it maybe Calvin coming from a Catholic background to Quote a Catholic Theologian. I dont know, I dont follow Calvin beliefs, I follow Jesus Christ, and his Catholic Church who posesses his authority To baptize and teach all nations in his name.

I dont think so bengal, its been many years since I have read Augustines the Two Cities of God, I found Augustine really hammering the Platonists. I wouldnt go as far as calling him a Platonist. Yes he does quote plato, You may have to have a Catholic understanding of ST. Augustine in order to understand him quoting the platonists, I found he takes their Ideology where they leave off , and St. Augustine elevates it to a Christian theology, thereby he even insults them a couple of times in his writings. ST. Augustine is not a Platonists, He is a Catholic Saint. I dont need to defend him, he does that on his own, read his writings. Have a dictionary and a Catechism handy because he gets very deep in his Christian theology.

I’m not aware that that’s been done.

Of course Augustine died long (approximately 1000 years) before Calvin was born. However, Calvin’s teachings on predestination come directly from Augustine’s later wirings.
