Gosh… you’re pickier than Henry VIII…

(The opportunity was there and I had to take it… I’m sorry 😃 )

I’m not the OP, but as a lifelong Episcopalian I might suggest that if you want to know what Episcopalians believe, a good place to start would be our catechism. Just do a web search for “book of common prayer” and “an outline of the faith”. You might conclude we’re not the monsters some make us out to be. Keep in mind that individual beliefs may vary widely, more so than in your church.

Well, I tried to post the emoji. I’m not too good at this.

How do Episcopalians justify abortion, contraception, sex before marriage, same sex relations, gender transitioning, interpreting the Bible, etc…?
I’m not Episcopalian but neither Jesus or Moses ever mentioned abortion, contraception, sex before marriage, same sex relations, gender transitioning or interpreting the bible.

Fornication was mentioned by both of them and Paul mentioned same sex relations. Since abortions is murder and the Bible does reference the act of creation in the womb so it does tie in too.

Also Jesus many times interpreted the Scriptures and prefaced it with " you have heard it said " …but…

This is profoundly inaccurate.

Abortion as a form of birth control is murder. Dress it up and call it something else, it’s still murder as already mentioned.

Jesus spoke of fornications as sin, which some modern translations render as sexual immorality. That’s a broad term and includes premarital and homosexual sexual activities. Also, the 4 Gospels and Acts aren’t the entire Bible. The Word of God is the entire Bible and each component are related, which are revealed with proper hermeneutics and exegesis. The OT and Paul’s Epistles are also from the Triune God and Jesus is the Second Person in the Trinity. Anything else is a Marcionistic heresy.

Through out the Gospels, Jesus explicated moral laws and used ‘as it is written’ a number of times before referencing and/or quoting the OT. Jesus had to deal with two different schools of interpretations, the Pharisees and the Sadducees. They were both wrong and Jesus corrected them.

Gender transitioning wasn’t even possible. The methods to mass produce hormones were only invented in the mid-1900s. Cross-dressing was condemned in Deuteronomy or Leviticus.

Also, absence isn’t licence. Hacking into someone’s smartphone is immoral, even if it’s not theft but it’s not explicitly in Scripture. Does it make it right? Of course not. Even if something is not specifically mentioned, Scripture is still sufficient in guiding us in examining issues that haven’t occurred at the time of when they were written down due to moral principles revealed in Scripture.

Hello Vanitas,
Could you provide one instance where Moses or Jesus mentioned fornification. With regards to paul he also criticized long hair, men wearing hats, women not wearing hats, and women speaking in church.

An interesting thread, but let’s have only posts directly about the Episcopal Church. Other things are also important, and worth defending/opposing, but there’s oth r threads.

In Deutoromy there are punishments for fornication and Paul was also against thieves. Jude also wrote against homosexuality.

And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
-Matthew 15:16-21

Were you raised Episcopalian? If so, were the contents of the 39 Articles taught at any point such as Sunday school or during sermons?

@Episcopalian2004, my question would be, why Episcopalian? Why not Anglican? Or non-denominational or some other branch of Protestantism? What makes you determine that the Truth is found in the Episcopalian church. Or, all Protestant denominations are equal, then again, why the Episcopalian church.

Thanks for this post…interesting.

That’s a circular argument. Whether of not abortion is murder is subject to debate. The Jerusalem Bible, for instance, specifies that a man accidentally causing a woman to have an involuntary abortion must be punished by paying a fine, but if the woman dies as a result of his violence, then he must also die.
Of course other translations differ, and there is debate as to which one is correct.

The point being that you ought not to assume, as a Catholic, that your viewpoint is without question the correct one.
