Is it appropriate to ask your priest if something is a sin in confession or should you discuss it in another setting? Thank you.

I asked my priest that same question the other day. It’s fine.

It seems like a very appropriate place for such questions, but also possibly not appropriate if that makes sense lol. That’s why I was unsure

It is far better to ask a priest in confession than it is to ask strangers on the internet. And the second best is to ask the priest outside of confession. There is absolutely nothing inappropriate about doing so; one however should keep in mind that there are others usually waiting to confess, and one should not get into what could essentially be spiritual counseling. That can be done with the priest in another setting.

What you can do to be more certain is to get a good Examination of conscience. We need to be aware not only of the differences between sins, but also what what is considered an imperfection - failures that are part of our broken nature and are not conscious decisions - therefore not sinful. We still work on those imperfections, however. As to that examination conscience, the best I have found recently is:

It is absolutely appropriate to ask if something you’ve done is sinful.
Now having said this, you shouldn’t say for example Susie I asked
the priest about “x” and he said it is sinful therefore you really need
to go to confession. So if your wondering for yourself that’s fine,
but if it is to catch someone no.
