Clarist Sister Rani Maria Vattalil, 41, was stabbed in front of more than 50 bus passengers on a remote jungle track in Madhya Pradesh state as she was on her way home to visit. As she was savagely murdered, she said “Jesus” repeatedly. Now she will be beatified by the Catholic Church on November 4, an important step towards canonization as a saint.
But her story is also about the man who murdered her. The family of the nun he murdered treated him with great forgiveness and love when he was in prison, making a radical change in him.
(For the story of the man who had murdered her see INDIA Sister Rani’s murderer now says, “Christians are India’s hope” " There are different reports about this, but he still is Hindu.)
