VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Almost lost in the recent furor over clerical sex abuse is that Pope Benedict XVI just turned 83 and is approaching one of the busiest stretches of his pontificate.
The unique position of the papacy brings octegenarians to leadership of the RCC from time to time. Frankly, the tasks confronting Benedict would be daunting to a 50 year-old.
Joseph Ratzinger seems remarkably resilient. His health looks good, and he keeps up his schedule. History may judge him as a pivotal pope, one who leaves a unique stamp on the church if he is able to boldly tackle the abuse scandals.
