Why don’t all kill people we don’t agree with? Why am I, and some atheists, opposed to the death penalty? If we can only act with regards to our feelings and concerns then how can we prosper in society? Your logic is flawed.
I don’t see how the logic is flawed, read the manifesto clearly, Atheism is core to it.

And it is an interesting point, why don’t you kill an individual you don’t agree with?
Why turn the other cheek? Why forgive? Why do these things? I don’t see how Atheism can answer these things, especially self-sacrifice for another persons gain in a nihilistic pointless universe that is bound to the fate of destruction one day.

The historically successful societies have been those that place God first, Nazi Germany, the USSR on the other hand…

Cultural societal obligations, personal observations, and rule of law.
Which in America derives from Protestantism, so your atheism is culturally inherited Protestantism with modifications.

Culturally, it is looked down upon for me to kill someone, for just about any reason.
This again is due to the Protestant culture that is inherited.

There are sources for morality outside of religion if you see them as such.
The problem is, as is repeated, is that you’ve inherited basic Christian principles, with modifications due to your atheism.

What then is raw atheism, without any Christian inheritances?

God Bless,

Chris

😃 Well, given the public campaign we’ve waged against atheism for the past 2000 years, I guess it’s about time atheists did something!

Better late than never!

I made a blunder on the previous post:

Positive Christianity’s purpose was to unite Germany under a quasi-religious establishment that saw the Nazi State as the producer of doctrine. It had nothing to do with true religion and true foundation.

Similar issues of Positive Christianity emerge with Bismark’s Kulturekampf, to utilise Christianity to unite the state. Where Bismark had truer intentions, Hitler established a false religion in aim to establish this. Bismark’s intentions were simple, establish the Protestant religion as sole and unifying. Hitler couldn’t even use an already Protestant establishment, but had to twist Christian teachings in conformity towards the state.

Positive Christianity thus isn’t an example of man trying to exert a true faith upon the populous, but as your very wikipedia article states:
wikipedia:
The political objective of national unity, to overcome confessional differences, to exterminate Catholicism, and to unite Protestantism into a single unitary Christian national socialist church
The problem with Positive Christianity is the usage of Christianity (to be twisted and deformed that it is no longer truly Christian) was to be established as a means of controlling the population. If Hitler really wished to assert the necessity of religion in core to ideology, why didn’t he use Bismark’s Kulturekampf policy? Why did he modify Christianity towards Nazi Ideology? If Christianity was modified to fit Nazi Ideology, Christianity comes second.

Hitler himself was a lapsed Catholic, and many members of the NSDAP were professed atheists.

As to the Communist Manifesto, it’s rather simple, rather than going an compromising route, it was completely hostile to religion and asserted atheism. Stalin decided to oppress the Church outright, allowing it temporarily during the Great Patriotic War, only to be oppressed again, later under Kruschev and Brezhnev.

The PRC also uses a similar form, where the Church is under control by the State, the Patriotic Church.

The Communist Manifesto is a more aggressive uncompromising form.

God Bless,

Chris.

I don’t see how the logic is flawed, read the manifesto clearly, Atheism is core to it.
All atheism states is that there is no God. There is no further interpretation beyond this aside from what you personally derive, not what atheism derives. Marxism and Communism work just fine even without atheism, look at almost any Asian communist nation.
Atheism doesn’t answer these things. That’s the point, atheism doesn’t give you good or bad moral guidance, it gives none. As such, when aspects of morality are called into question, such as communists murdering Christians, why blame atheism when atheism doesn’t address these questions? When you’re a communist and kill a Christian you’re doing so not out of an atheistic ideology, but a communist ideology. If you’re a Nazi, your hate fueled rampage is fueled by Nazism, not Christianity.
I know about Positive Christianity, Positive Christianity was established, not as part of the manifesto but as part of governance to bring the Christian population under closer control. The communist manifesto on the other hand…
Toe-meigh-toe, toe-mah-toe, both were used as a tool in an ideology that at times had no problem murdering others that disagreed with them. How that tool was applied is irrelevant.
Which in America derives from Protestantism, so your atheism is culturally inherited Protestantism with modifications.
Culturally, no. While the laws might have some Protestant background to them, my Hawaiian culture does not. To me, it seems pretty simple to see that by murdering someone I risk being in trouble with the law and becoming a societal outcast. What part of religion do I need to tell me this? The fact that religion overlaps with culture/law does not mean that religion supplied the moral background for that cultural practice/law.
The problem is, as is repeated, is that you’ve inherited basic Christian principles, with modifications due to your atheism.
My parents were Christian to a degree, but i’ve never been influenced tremendously by those ideals. Even atheistic cultures know that is wrong to kill, steal, etc. This is due in part to what society agrees is acceptable. What religion does is it acts as the backbone of morality, not necessarily letting society define that morality for itself. If you don’t think morality can be derived or inherited outside of religion then you will never accept this argument and we should just move on.
What then is raw atheism, without any Christian inheritances?
You’re talking about apples and oranges. Raw atheism can only address one aspect of Christianity, not its entirety. The correct answer is that it depends on the moral background of the individual.

I made a blunder on the previous post:

Positive Christianity’s purpose was to unite Germany under a quasi-religious establishment that saw the Nazi State as the producer of doctrine. It had nothing to do with true religion and true foundation.
You mean Christianity was distorted, used as tool, and taken beyond its scope and interpretation? If only I could make some relation as to how this relates to atheism as the core of the communist manifesto…
Hitler himself was a lapsed Catholic, and many members of the NSDAP were professed atheists.
Hitler was also a professed Christian, it didn’t stop him from abusing a Christian ideology.

Why didn’t you post this from your own link?
The latest statistics show that a lack of religious identity increased in every US state between 1990 and 2008.[29] However less than 2% of the U.S. population describe themselves as atheist.
When it comes to the USA, being indifferent I would say is similar to agnostic/atheist. Maybe I should re-classify and say that ~15% of people hold no religion. As such, the same issues about Christian guided morality arise for this 15%.
Agnostics are not atheists.
Atheism ideology does not care about the state of atheism in a populace. Unlike Christianity, proselytizing is not mandated by the book of atheism  If someone is looking to spread atheism at the end of a sword it’s because of some other ideology, not a non-belief.
What about the spate of bestselling, yet vacuous and vituperative atheist books?

Three hundred pages of nuh-uh and equating religious education of children to child abuse etc…

Why the atheist churches? Why the advertising campaigns?
Intent doesn’t matter to you. If it did, you would recognize the that atheism has no intent to be violent or convert others. If Christianity had not existed then it would not have been exploited as a core for Nazism. Much like if Atheism had not existed it would not have been exploited as a core for communism.
Atheism has no basis for objective morality. History bears out this fact.

All atheism states is that there is no God. There is no further interpretation beyond this aside from what you personally derive, not what atheism derives. Marxism and Communism work just fine even without atheism, look at almost any Asian communist nation.
Vietnam is led by an Atheist party, as with the PRC, the DPRNK.

Atheism states that there is no God, that is correct. I’m pointing to the Communist Manifesto that embeds the necessity of Atheism into its doctrine.

That’s the problem with Atheism, it doesn’t answer these things. If it tries to assert itself as superior (ie Dawkins, Hitchens et al) then we need to know these things.

The reason we look to the Communists and the murdering of Christians (from a state level at least) is because there is a correlation between the atheist and the murder:

Stalin, Mao ZeDong, Pol Pot and so forth.

While atheism can have a number of ideologies attached or being subjective to atheism, Communism is a specific branch of atheist materialism. Atheist ideology alone isn’t associated with Communism, hence why I’m not arguing that all atheists are communists. But due to the binding nature of Atheistic Materialism and the principles it exerts in the Communist Manifesto, there is a clear defined link.

While I state this, I still assert that Atheism is associated with the ideology, because of its relationship.

Maybe you’ve absorbed Christian ideals due to your surroundings? The populous of the USSR (primarily an atheistic culture) didn’t mind the exploitation of Stalin’s fear and paranoia for personal benefits and gains [See Orlando Figes ‘The Whisperers’]. Again referencing the People’s Republic of China, we see problems with this moral assertion.

The problem with the USSR and the PRC is that they both originate from strongly former religious nations, which suggests an attempt to shake off the old (something that the neo-atheists seem to desire) and establish something new.

The latter poses moral relativism, and becomes quite problematic. What society can choose to be acceptable can deter from what is Morally Good. If morality is nothing more than what society chooses to be acceptable, then essentially, society will collapse. As you have earlier stressed that Atheism doesn’t answer these moral questions, then essentially atheistic societies are bound to fail.

Not quite, Raw atheism is without any previous cultural inheritance, just atheism alone, no God and no absolute. Western Atheism derives from the Christian religion, these notions of helping one another and so forth (unless atheism can explain why we do such in a nihilistic and pointless world that is dominated in the terms of survival of the fittest) are inherited from said Christian religion.

The correct answer you said is which depends on the moral background of the individual: as you have stated that religion forms the backbone, then wouldn’t it be necessary to keep that religion?

The future can only be hypothetical to us, but considering that the United Kingdom saw a cultural revolution in the 1960s to oppose which is traditional, if an atheistic society were to do the same, and religion were not present, what authority does it have to say what is right and what is wrong?

If you say it is subjective and relativistic, then the problem emerges that morality doesn’t really exist.

Christianity was distorted, used as a tool and taken beyond its scope and interpretation. That is correct. You cannot say the same about atheism because atheism is a key point for Communism. Read the manifesto.

Agnostics are not atheists.
Because the same issues arise in all three groups, atheist, agnostic, indifferent, in that they don’t necessarily rely on a Christian morality for guidance. If you’re agnostic but believe the Bible is absolute truth then I question your agnosticism.
What about the spate of bestselling, yet vacuous and vituperative atheist books?

Three hundred pages of nuh-uh and equating religious education of children to child abuse etc…
I’m sorry I must have missed that in my Guide to Being a Better Atheist handbook. If someone wants to impose their view, or demonize another, then that’s on their own moral teachings, not the lack thereof from atheism.
Why the atheist churches? Why the advertising campaigns?
Atheist churches? I might just do it for the tax write off. I have no need to set up rituals and mantra’s that mean nothing to me. Some people just like to advertise their beliefs, this doesn’t mean their beliefs tell them to advertise, unlike Christianity. It sounds like a waste of money to be advertising atheism to me 🤷
Atheism has no basis for objective morality. History bears out this fact.
No, it doesn’t. Atheism doesn’t address morality. I’m glad you can see this.
That’s true, but most “atheists” aren’t willing to make that claim.
Have you talked to “most” atheists, or are you referring to the most sensationalized as shown in media?

Vietnam is led by an Atheist party, as with the PRC, the DPRNK.
Really? vietnamembassy-usa.org/learn_about_vietnam/culture/beliefs_and_religions/
Atheism states that there is no God, that is correct. I’m pointing to the Communist Manifesto that embeds the necessity of Atheism into its doctrine.
Atheism is just one of the justifications, not a key component. One can still be a communist and religious.

They’re also all men who were tyrannical dictators. Why single out atheism which doesn’t address any of their actions? Where are the rampant murders from the Atheist League crying out in the name of Atheism? If you’re goal is to say a lack of Christianity is the main reason for immorality in this world then every aspect that doesn’t deal with or is in opposition to Christianity is suspect. This is a ridiculous concept.
Materialism follows atheism. Define Atheistic Materialism so I can better distinguish the two.
One was a tool Positive Christianity, as explained was to unite the population under the state] another was specifically of the manifesto which saw religion as a threat and must be eliminated], there is a distinct difference.
Not really. Is communism taking atheism beyond its scope and meaning different than Nazi’s taking Christianity outside of its scope and meaning?
Why would you come into trouble with the law or become a social outcast? That’s partially the point, where does this idea come from?
Regardless of religion, people have societal ties and conventions to one another so that society can live peacefully. Without societal conventions, society breaks down and no longer functions properly. One does not need religion to create societal conventions (laws). Look at any tribal society.
Religion tends to be the epicentre for culture, defining it.
Perhaps in many, but not all. I believe the backbone of culture is tradition, regardless of religious ties.
Maybe you’ve absorbed Christian ideals due to your surroundings?
Doubtful. I don’t reference religion in my morality so how can this be the case?
The latter poses moral relativism, and becomes quite problematic. What society can choose to be acceptable can deter from what is Morally Good. If morality is nothing more than what society chooses to be acceptable, then essentially, society will collapse. As you have earlier stressed that Atheism doesn’t answer these moral questions, then essentially atheistic societies are bound to fail.
I would think if you are morally relative that you have no basis for morality, that morality is whatever you wish it to be. I know no one who fits this definition. On the assumption that you mean relative in that your views can change then you base societal collapse on the assumption that moral relativism is doomed to fail. Currently, the USA is mostly morally relative. Is the USA doomed to fail?
Not quite, Raw atheism is without any previous cultural inheritance, just atheism alone, no God and no absolute. Western Atheism derives from the Christian religion, these notions of helping one another and so forth (unless atheism can explain why we do such in a nihilistic and pointless world that is dominated in the terms of survival of the fittest) are inherited from said Christian religion.
You help others in the hope that others will help you (it’s a gamble), which is why you form social ties. No religion required for this answer. Look at monkeys grooming each others’ backs.
The correct answer you said is which depends on the moral background of the individual: as you have stated that religion forms the backbone, then wouldn’t it be necessary to keep that religion?
If religion is your only moral backbone, maybe. If your religion is intolerant, say if Nazism became a religion, then non-white society members might seek a new form of morality.
The future can only be hypothetical to us, but considering that the United Kingdom saw a cultural revolution in the 1960s to oppose which is traditional, if an atheistic society were to do the same, and religion were not present, what authority does it have to say what is right and what is wrong?
The law, and by extension society.

Because the same issues arise in all three groups, atheist, agnostic, indifferent, in that they don’t necessarily rely on a Christian morality for guidance. If you’re agnostic but believe the Bible is absolute truth then I question your agnosticism.
They do, but only to a point and without realizing it, much like scientists who unknowingly rely on the metaphysical assumptions upon which the scientific method depends.
I’m sorry I must have missed that in my Guide to Being a Better Atheist handbook. If someone wants to impose their view, or demonize another, then that’s on their own moral teachings, not the lack thereof from atheism.
Such a book would be silly. Good and evil are meaningless concepts if there is no God. In any case the fruit of atheism is the greatest mass murders in history, not benevolence.

So you’d like to… be a better atheist. :doh2:
Atheist churches? I might just do it for the tax write off. I have no need to set up rituals and mantra’s that mean nothing to me. You’ll love the atheist de-baptism ritual with a hair dryer.
No, it doesn’t. Atheism doesn’t address morality. I’m glad you can see this.
Atheism can’t address morality. The objective basis for morality is God. Anything else is completely arbitrary and subjective, which is no basis for morality.
Have you talked to “most” atheists, or are you referring to the most sensationalized as shown in media?
Most of the atheists I’ve spoken to personally aren’t willing to make that claim. There are plenty of neo-atheists online uncritically repeating what the most sensationalized media atheists write and most of them won’t make that claim either.

Christianity was distorted, used as a tool and taken beyond its scope and interpretation. That is correct. You cannot say the same about atheism because atheism is a key point for Communism. Read the manifesto.
Atheism is a justification of communism. One is not dependent upon the other. Why don’t you tell me why communism MUST have atheism.
Hitler was a lapsed Catholic, his usage of God in his speeches, like Positive Christianity was to united the German nation. How else could he mobilise a heavily Catholic and Protestant population for and during times of war? If anything, Hitler was deist/pagan. His usage of ‘Lord’ refers to Christian upbringing, and the last time he attended a Catholic Church was at about the age of 8? My concern is not with showing how Catholic Hitler was, just that he took an otherwise tame ideology and twisted it to fit his own desires.

They do, but only to a point and without realizing it, much like scientists who unknowingly rely on the metaphysical assumptions upon which the scientific method depends.
How can they not realize it? I don’t understand your simile.
Such a book would be silly. Good and evil are meaningless concepts if there is no God. In any case the fruit of atheism is the greatest mass murders in history, not benevolence.
Who’s talking about good and evil? I won’t get into a ****ing contest with you about the who’s committed the most murder. I’ll just remind you that no one kills in the name of atheism, but people still kill in the name of God.

It’s funny, anonymity does funny things to a person. It allows them to be as extreme and rude as they like then they would otherwise be. I suspect you will find that 99% of the time, the loudest 1% of a group will be the best reported.

How can they not realize it? I don’t understand your simile.
Some have never even thought about the matter, others come to believe their rationalizations.

There’s no contest. Atheism is orders of magnitude in the lead. Atheism kills out of hatred of God.

The vituperative atheist authors aren’t nameless. 🤷

We all believe our rationalizations.

What? It doesn’t make sense for an atheist to kill a person because of a hatred of another being they don’t believe in. Atheism does not demand you kill someone for not believing in the same thing as you. Let me give you an example, every atheist in the USA. Not every Christian can make that same claim.
The vituperative atheist authors aren’t nameless. 🤷
Who’s saying they’re nameless?

I think you overstate the role played by Christianity in Nazism. If anything, the traditional religions of Germany (Lutheranism and Catholicism, and a smaller Calvinist minority) and their institutions were road blocks to Hitler’s utter domination of society. The “Christian” ideology the Nazis created was to deal with inclination of many people to identify with Christianity. The idea that, without Christianity, Nazism would not have happened or wouldn’t have been as bad is, I think, not true. The lack of Christianity simply would’ve saved the Nazis the trouble of having to invent “positive Christianity” (and it was troublesome; after all, the messiah of Christianity is a Jew, not an Aryan). Generally, I think they were far more sincere about their neo-Pagan, Nordic, racialist mythology that fit better into their political ideology.
Who’s talking about good and evil? I won’t get into a ****ing contest with you about the who’s committed the most murder. I’ll just remind you that no one kills in the name of atheism, but people still kill in the name of God.
And I’ll remind you again that no one feeds the hungry and clothes the naked in the name of atheism. This would open up a whole different debate, but I’ll just say that I think most people who supposedly kill for God aren’t really killing for God. It is generally believed, of course, that one must be a religious fanatic to blow oneself up to kill ‘infidels.’ But secular and even anti-religious terrorists have been using suicide bombing for years (the Tamil tigers have committed more terrorist attacks than most Islamist organizations combined; the Kurdish Workers’ Party continues to commit such attacks in Turkey; and secular terrorist organizations, usually anarchist, communist, whatever, are very active in places like Lebanon and Palestine). I think it is almost always more about politics than about religion, as was the case with northern Ireland, IMO.
It’s funny, anonymity does funny things to a person. It allows them to be as extreme and rude as they like then they would otherwise be. I suspect you will find that 99% of the time, the loudest 1% of a group will be the best reported.
I think youtube (especially the comments) is a great example of this phenomenon. Aside from very many very angry atheists, one finds political extremists of all stripes there. It is amazing, for example, how many neo-nazis one finds there. I’ve always wondered, are these the people i see walking around the streets, going to class with me, being perfectly cordial and normal in real life, but then on the internet are Nazis and communists and whatnot? Or are they just “internet people” who never leave their houses and I don’t see in the outside world? Anyway, just something I ponder.

Atheism, being merely an idea, can’t kill people, while some atheists can. Ideas don’t kill people. People do. You may have noticed this, but I tend to pick on generalizations. Atheism doesn’t necessitate hatred of religion (though unfortunately today, with Dawkins and his ilk pushing their nonsense, it seems atheism is becoming increasingly more associated with anti-theism). There were those, for example, like one of my favorite historians, Will Durant, who had many good things to say about Christianity and Catholicism and even seemed to lament that they weren’t true. There was Leo Strauss, who was positively pro-religion, and referred to religions as ‘noble lies.’ So there isn’t one uniform attitude of atheists or agnostics toward religion.
Some have never even thought about the matter, others come to believe their rationalizations.
Some more thoughtful scientists like Stephen Jay Gould actually do engage the philosophical foundations of science. Others, like Richard Dawkins, either flout them or worse yet dismiss philosophical thinking as worthless and proceed to make a mockery of it by pretending they know what they’re talking about when straying outside their fields of expertise.

People kill people when they act on their bad ideas. Anti-theist atheists are not a new phenomena. The atheist has no basis for morality. That gives atheists carte blanche to target and destroy theists.

Anti-theist atheism is not a new phenomena.

Pope John Paul II was shot and Mary saved him.
It must’ve taken God himself and every saint and angel to save His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. That could just be me exaggerating, but that’s because he was a most beloved Pope. :bighanky:

You know, I’m very surprised to see an atheist here of all places.

The guy must get a thrill from being here or something.
