I know there are at least a few atheists who post here and also on other Christian forums. I’m wondering why. As an atheist, why do you care that people believe in God? I would think that you couldn’t care less if there are believers, yet you try to convince people to stop believing.

The question will inevitably be turned around and you will ask why Christians try to convince you that there is a God. Obviously, we believe in an afterlife and would like to save souls. If we are wrong, at least it is done out of love and no harm will become you. But, you try to convince us that there is no salvation, no soul and if you are wrong, eternal hell awaits. So, you’re not trying to convince us out of love or compassion or anything good that I can think of.

Thanks for the responses.

Why do atheists post here? Hopefully they feel they are missing something and want to turn to God who truly exists, and they’d like to be convinced of this. So by coming here which is a good step in the right direction they will learn things they never knew.
Then there are the others who do it to try and challenge the faith and constantly nit pick and want to argue. These types will never see the light. But you must pray for them anyway.

At first, I came here to read and share views because, at that time, I was Catholic. But, now that I am a hardcore Agnostic, I simply stay for the sake of debating and being entertained by responses and behaviors I may find.

I am curious, what led you to become “hardcore Agnostic”? Did you read anything that contributed to this?

So, debating with Christians is done for entertainment purposes only?

I agree and certainly don’t mean to discourage an atheist from posting. I also pray for that Catholic or Christian who is not grounded in his/her faith and is deceived by atheists who post here. Unfortunately, there are people in that category. I read posts here everyday that claim that one’s faith is in question. I worry because that’s the opportune time for something else to take root. Peace.

Overall, I became Agnostic due to my own observances in human behavior- in person and through taking a psychology class. This forum was the straw that broke the camels back.

And yes, debating and reading some of the material presented here is admittedly amusing… to an extent. Other times, some of the stuff here is quite the “shock value.” :o

How can you even think of blaming these forums when they are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the Catholic church and tells the truth? That is your cop out my friend, you don’t want to put in the work of being a Catholic as others here seem to feel also. That is why I love my faith because it isn’t easy. Just as Christ said it won’t be easy to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

It’s not about the rules or the difficulty of the faith. I was alright with the challenge–even now, I’m still participating in the season of Lent with my family (I decided to give up meat, and I intend to keep that promise; so far, so good :p).

The forums showed me how different I was; how accepting I was of diversity, mystery, and the thought of an ultimate Death without an Afterlife. I realized that I had to stop lying to the entity you call God and began to honor the possibility of there being a God, while feeling that His existence is unlikely due to the thoughts and feelings you (among other members of different faiths) have. So many people have different ideas and perspectives of the same being.

But, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t lose faith; I found out that I didn’t need it. 🤷

I dont believe you when you say you stay for the sake of debate and entertainment… like all humans you are drawn to God even in this doubtful period in your life… this is a response I posted to an athiest in another thread thats pertinant to you so i copied it for you…

I too have shared your sentiments at times in my life… although i have been more agnostic than athiest as i have never had enough pride to say i completely understand wether God exests or not… I will say the the most pertinent aspect to my reversion was two things… I believe love is somthing that shows that God is in us and is from God secondly Phantasm I think both of us have been at times discusted with human interpritation of God, I too get smug when I hear people try to convince me the earth is 10000 years old and other infintile aspects of human thought (like God hates Gays or somthing like that). God is not completly understandible and ive excepted that, we have no true concept of reality because our reality can change. I have let go of trying to make sense of everything and I work on being a better me and asking God for strength in faith and it has worked for me (even when I asked with doubt in my heart). I say this having been to war as a semi agnostic and comming out angry with God then comming to believe. It also dawned on me that my love for my children must be what the Gospel is talking about when describing how God loves us but even infinatly more intense… blasting you for your doubt is wrong because I believe most have doubted I think you to will some day come to believe in God untill then keep searching for truth and realize that we can only focus on earthly things… we cant see with complete clarity.

🍿 I’ve seen some pretty amusing responses to my views, and this one takes the cake.

I don’t mean to be mean, but just as you see me as a “predictable Agnostic who will eventually go back to God,” I’ll admit that I see you as “the predictable religious person who refuses to take ‘Agnosticism’/‘Atheism’ for an answer.”

This isn’t a doubtful period at all. I just finally begun to find myself. I realized I couldn’t lie to myself or to the imaginary friend I called God. Now, I would not be so close-minded to say “No, God absolutely doesn’t exist,” but I would never be so self-centered to say “Yes, there absolutely is a God who actually cares about me (or us).”

As I said on another post above yours, I honor the possibility of there being a God, but I find it highly unlikely.

How can you exist without faith? You exist with nothingness. And big deal you gave up meat for Lent, yet you have no faith…something wrong with this picture?

I started of majoring in Chemistry, minoring in math and History. I ended up in psychology with minors in Chemistry, math and history. The more I studied, the more sure I was that there is a God and that all of humanity needs faith. Why? Because I met more and more idiots that cannot be the end of evolution. No, there must be more to life than that goofball sitting next to me pining over the cheerleader that does not know he exists. There is too much perfection in an imperfect world for it to be a cosmic dice game. And, when men lose faith in God, really, really bad things happen. I know. I read that book, every chapter and they date from pre-history to today. And beyond.

Atheists have chosen a world view that makes sense to them. It fits how they want to see things. Like all people, they see it as correct. They want to show us how we are wasting our lives. Or how dumb and misguided we are. I challenge people to study the psychology and history of militant atheists and see if they notice a few strange things… I have.

Anyway, as I like to tell atheists, if I live my life helping others, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and all those things, how in the hell have I harmed anyone with my faith? How have I limited myself at all?

I love the story of the atheist who died and came back to life with his story of being sent to hell and seeing the decay, the stench and the smell of that horrifying place. He is now a minister who goes around to all the churches and tells his story. He was given a second chance. To you atheists who do not believe, i would read the bible and learn from your savior Jesus Christ because this man yelled out **JESUS HELP ME **and he was helped and given a second chance. His story is truly amazing.

Living without faith varies from person to person. Many couldn’t stomach the idea of having to live without the comforts of faith; others, like me, can.

Only in retrospect is life without faith an indescribably wonderful life. However, it is perfectly natural for you to feel otherwise.

I don’t believe you have a wonderful life. May God have mercy on your soul.

Sounds like a good story, do you recall his name?

So what? Ever hear of a hallucination?

To be quite honest, the more I read the bible the more convinced I become that the Christian view of god is wrongheaded.
