Atlanta archbishop in line for NYC job
Wilton Gregory, the popular and respected Archbishop of Atlanta, is one of several candidates in line to take over as Archbishop of New York, say those who watch Roman Catholic politics.

Gregory would shatter one huge precedent if named Archbishop of New York, says Rocco Palmo, a Catholic journalist and blogger from Philadelphia with connections in the U.S. and Europe.

Gregory is African American, and every New York Archbishop since 1850 has been of Irish descent.

Ten or twelve names have been in the rumor mill since last fall, Palmo said.

“But consistently, since October or November, I’ve heard about Gregory at or near the the top of the list,” he said.

He used to be the Bishop of Belleville, IL, and from what I’ve read, has left it in a huge, unorthodox mess. Anyone know how he has done in Atlanta?

I’m sorry…but what exactly is a ‘huge unorthodox mess’

A disappointing appointment IMO if true. But JP2 had what I consider many disappointing appointments too.

NYC needs a dynamic orthodox bishop along the lines of Burke or Chaput. JMHO.

I’d have to concur with the question. My understanding has always been that Wilt helped to improve some challenging situations while in Belleville. I think that we need to be careful with jumping to conclusions about a bishop solely on the state of a diocese’s circumstances.

It’s all about the revenge of Cardinal Mundelein, my friends. Mundelein came from New York to be the most prominent Archbishop Chicago has ever had. During his tenure, he furthered the minor seminary program by building Quigley. Now New York is governed by a Quigley alumnus from suburban Oak Park. Clearly, the line of succession has set up to control the Big Apple via this unending route, with another Chicagoan and Quigley man as the heir apparent. 😉

I wouldn’t get too excited. It says he’s only one of the candidates.

Anyone know who the other ones are?

No one really ‘knows’ except for Abp Siambi and (maybe) at this point the Congregation of Bishops.

Isn’t Cardinal Egan the Archbishop of New York?
Currently, yes. But he has passed the canonical age of 75 when bishops are asked to submit their resignations, so it is only a matter of time before the pope decides to eventually accept that (which this pope seems to be doing sooner rather than later - such as custom had become with some bishops, especially those in “cardinaliate sees” under Pope John Paul II. So speculation on his eventual successor is inevitable.

From the article:
Gregory’s easy style, popularity with priests and reputation as a problem solver would also seem to qualify him for New York, which is in something of a funk because of Egan’s unpopularity, Palmo said.
Such observations about Cardinal Egan are often offered. I’d like to know more about what is really going on and why this is.

Thanks. I should have read the article! 👍

I am from the diocese of Belleville…I do not recommend the Archbishop for promotion.

We’ll be sure to let the nuncio know, I’m certain the anonymous opinions of message board posters enter heavily into the debate.
