Archbishop Gregory was not viewed as the best Bishop the diocese of Belleville ever had.Why is that?
But there’s a personal reason…how he handled the abuse and alleged abuse by priests.
It seems there was a man in his 40s accused of sexually molesting his own children. He claimed that the reason he did it was because when he was 8 years old he was repeatedly sexually abused by his parish priest. With no substantiating evidence, and no other claimants of abuse (peers of the 40 something year old accuser who attended the same parish as well as other parishes the priest served at were interviewed with no further accussations of abuse by this priest), and despite the fervent denials of the priest in question the priest was removed from his parish and essentially forced to retire. His case lingered with the Bishop and the civilian board of review for several years…with out an official decision by them he couldn’t appeal to Rome.
So, ONE SINGLE ACCUSER, who, in my opinion, was seeking to mitigate the abuse he commited against his own children made an uncooberated claim that he was sexually abused by a priest…and with no further evidence…the priest was removed. Why did the Bishop let this happen? my OPINION is because the priest was a quite orthodox priest and the Bishop, as a product of Cardinal Bernadine…was a bit more liberal…and the priest was critical of this to the Bishops face…and in private discussions with friends…though never publically.
There are other examples of mishandling alleged abuse cases, but this is the one that hit closest to home.
