Where are you looking? Areas north of Atlanta have reasonable rents, right now. Try the areas around Cumming. The commute is horrible, but people do it.

Who am I to dictate what should be done with a BEQUEST from a very generous and wealthy lay member of the Diocese?

One of the “dictums” I learned from my time in grad school was “Understanding precedes evaluation”.

I now feel I understand, and my evaluation is this: Aren’t we fortunate to have had such a large and generous DONATION? Aren’t we fortunate that we had a group of diversified people that donated their time and talents to help propose a budget to meet the needs of our archdiocese?

I forgot to mention, the total bequest was $15 million.

No more complaints. Not from me, anyway.

Money is completely fungible. It makes NO DIFFERENCE whether the donation was made by bequest or donations from other parishoners.
 
It is necessary to keep in mind that attempting to lie simply within the context of institutional living can be a bit of a mine field. It’s not merely a matter of moving to cheaper digs, but also of balancing the needs and various ministries of the members of the community. Living in buildings which are large (and are paid for),and which may seem opulant, may express more simplicity than moving an entire community into smaller housing, but which is unable to meet the needs of the community. There is a balance which needs to be maintained between a variety of necessities, only one of which is a witness to a simple life style. These considerations may have been unbalanced in Bishop Greogory’s case and it is good that he has recognized this. For the rest of us, we should recognize that large buildings do not necessarily reflect a wealthy life style anymore than a small car, such as a sports car, reflects simplicity.
 
The land was donated.
The house is 6400 sqft and costs $2,200,000

The cost to build is $344/sqft.

An average house costs about half that much.
