God offered himself to pay the debt.
I understand that. Regardless of mercy or wrath, the payment was a real payment. jesus really suffered and really died. Other than his suffering and death, how can God “pay” the debt? He can’t. Therefore all I am saying is that whether you call it a “payment” or “penalty” or “punishment” or whatever, he in fact, paid, was penalized, was punished - in my stead. otherwise how, in Anselm’s sense, can Christ’s death bring God honor? Where is Anselmian superabundance of honor in Christ’s death unless it consists of the payment of a penalty?

To whom is the debt owed? To God. Who paid the debt? God (the Son).

In this sense, God forgave the debt (as a creditor who pays himself to satisfy my debt). This is not an act of justice as much as it is an act of mercy (personal sacrifice on behalf of another).

You understand justice. You still do not understand mercy.
