Attended my second Traditional (high) mass

Most of my life, I have attended the ordinary form mass, plus I attended the Divine Liturgy earlier this year. I have now been to two TLM and I can honestly say that I have never attended such a beautiful liturgy. I am in awe as to its beauty, its message and the reverence that is displayed. Why did we ever try to get rid of it?

I never thought I would say this but I am going to have a very difficult time attending the Ordinary Form after I experienced the TLM. Now I know the OF is just as valid form of liturgy and I see many good things in the reform BUT the TLM is holy on many many levels.

i grew up with the latin rite never understood it and never liked feeling like a spectator. When vatican II changed things I felt like I was now more of a participant!. I have heard so many of stories of our older generation saying the rosary or other prayers until it was time for communion. I hope the ordinary mass never dissapears!

Please excuse the horrible church architecture. Bishop Bruskewitz inherited that and I truly feel bad for him, as he is such a great friend of tradition. Anyway, that is the ordinations of five priests of the FSSP, a traddie priestly group. Their seminary is in his diocese.

This is what’s called Pontifical Solemn Mass, which is the fullest ceremonial version of the EF other than Papal Solemn Mass. These Pontifical Solemns happen, I’d say, maybe 15ish times a year in this country. There is a bishop, priest assistant, deacon, subdeacon, two deacons of honor (assistants at the throne), and myriad altar boys, many of them seminarians.

A normal Pontifical Solemn Mass wouldn’t be two hours and forty-four minutes long, but the conferral of Holy Orders does take quite a while.

Well last week was my second time… And I have to say personally I feel bored with the Novus Ordo mass… since i have seen the Traditional mass… Its a real blessing… just so sad that I have to travel more the 4 hours to attend the mass

Yes, but as an observant Jew, Jesus and all of his disciples would have been quite familiar with liturgical Hebrew.

And also remember that a lot of early Christianity was based on Greek. Greek wasn’t really the vernacular; it was a lingua franca that most everyone in the East understood.

Fortunately, we have a Solemn TLM on all Holy Days and we have a TLM 7 days a week, either a Missa Cantata or low mass.

This is my experience too. I find the OF difficult to attend even though I know that it is a valid Mass. It is like I have gotten “hooked” on the Extraordinary Form.

I would, however, add that the ugly can also lead us to God. A lot of our Saints dealt with, and sometimes are, the ugly (hungry, imprisoned, outcast, etc.). The cross, a symbol of death and desolation, has been transformed into a symbol of hope and life that will forever lead us to God. Such is His power: to make something ugly into a path to holiness and God.

It means that one’s heart, mind & soul are not being elevated to God. The mind wanders and prayer or focus on God becomes lost. I can relate to what posters have said because I experience what they have said. I truly feel more in the presence of God at the EF. It’s not meant to be negative against the OF. It’s just a fact for me. It’s actually difficult to explain. An example: the sung Credo in Latin makes me want to weep. The creed read at the OF like a robot feels like going through the motions.

I understand that. That’s why I quoted the others as they, like you, expressed a spiritual experience. However, the use of the word “bored” was a little off putting. May the responding poster should have used another word. Honestly, I will actually not hesitate to say a “sarcastic quip” about entertainment to anyone who will feel bored at Mass, EF or OF.

I don’t know maybe it’s just the word “bored” and it’s connection to entertainment.

Maybe because, a teenager once told me that she’s not a Catholic anymore because she finds the [OF] Mass boring and old-fashioned. Sigh. I just wanted to tell her, “sorry, Christ didn’t entertain you and treat you like guests.”

You may be right, speaking for myself. It’s the formula I need to grow in Holiness. And it helped by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, I am not able regularly attend the EF.

This could also explain the overall low Mass attendance numbers in the West.
