Good day!

I have a question regarding attending the Mass in person.

Our parish here in the Philippines only lets limited people like 150 persons once on a Sunday to attend the mass in the Church.

My question is, is the mass still obligatory on that day?

Thanks.

Check online for your bishop’s statement - most places have lifted the Sunday obligation due to Covid. I’d be surprised if it’s any different where you are.

Oh. I just saw this post from March. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Yes, your bishop will guide you on dispensations during the pandemic. Many bishops differ by geography, politics, and leadership style so it’s important to see what your local bishop instructs.

Check for a statement from your bishop and look online to see if your parish has a livestream of mass if you are worried about going in person. It sounds like there isn’t a statement, so maybe call the diocesan office to get some clarification on a dispensation, which I’d assume there would be, but I don’t know. My parish has a great livestream and there are some great priests who post mass online every Sunday if you are looking for some variety. I really like Fr. Mike Schmitz and usually watch his mass.

You ultimately need to determine if you are at a higher risk for getting infected and make a decision based on that. If you decide to go make sure to follow the guidelines for masks, social distancing, and any directives from the diocese or parish. Be safe and God bless!

If only 150 are admitted, then it clearly cannot be binding on all. I would call the Archdiocese or check their website.

Good day, I recently found this posted on March from the facebook page of our diocese and there’s no update until now. I think the dispensation is still binding, what do you think?

I would imagine that dispensations are valid until rescinded. It is physically impossible for all parishioners to attend if only 150 are permitted. I would check with your parish and see if there is a sign-up list. My only other thought is to ask if that list is filled quickly. If so, I would ensure that the elderly and those with disabilities can attend. But, that might just be me.

It sounds very open ended at this point. Maybe send them an email and ask them where they stand. I’d recommend going to the church and parking outside close to where the Blessed Sacrament is located and spending some time in prayer. That has helped me a ton during the pandemic. These are trying times, but know that He is always near even when we can’t gather at mass.
