Gabriel of 12;
I read your post and asked myself, what would Jesus say?

Matthew 19:29
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.

Luke 12:51
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.

Easier said than done; I can just imagine the sacrifice our Priests made when they adhered to God’s calling.

Practicing your living Catholic faith, would draw their Love for God. Again easier said than done. Sharing and living your faith would be the example for them. Visiting another church is not a problem, so long as you are “Confirmed” and set on Rock meaning cannot be moved by every wind of doctrine other than the one handed down to you from Jesus and the Apostles from the Catholic Church. And do not partake in their communion services. But be ready to give an answer for your faith. Find a spiritual advisor, to discuss your Christian walk through these times of witnessing either by sharing or just living out your Christ like walk.

Peace be with you
As usual, Gabriel of 12, a well thought-out post.

Hello,
My wife and I were confirmed into the HCC during the Easter vigil mass of '07. My parents both pastor at a protestant Church. My dad is the “music minister” and my mother is the pastor of outreach and evangelism. Is it acceptable for me to attend their services? My dad likes for me to attend when he preaches. Which is about once a month. Obviously, I don’t recieve communion because we are not in communion. I want to show him my love and respect, though I don’t want any mixed messages to be sent to the other members who attend there that we approve of Protestantism in general by my presence. What are your thoughts?
Go. It does not matter what other’s think, let them assume what they want, your father is your father, they are people you might not know very well, or even be friends with, but if they assume, it is not your fault that they assume wrong. I advise you go, be proud of your father, and let them think what they want about your beliefs.

As usual, Gabriel of 12, a well thought-out post.

Thank you Jon, I have been following some of your posts, and followed your authentic Catholic sites, impressive, you must do alot of research.

When I read some of your posts, I find no difference at times in our faith just terminology that points to the same belief in Jesus Christ. Its as if we speak a different language saying the same thing.

God bless you Jon

my presence can be seen as “approving” or “validating” their denomination; which I don’t.
As a non-catholic, I figure I can add a thought or two to this thread. If I was a member of the church you had left, I would have two assumptions if I saw you come back to attend when your father preaches. I would assume that you love your father, and I would assume that there’s still hope for you to come back to a right relationship with the Lord. I would not see your simple act of attending as an indication that you were back to “approving” the denomination you used to belong to. Rather, it would just be a first step to perhaps coming back to approving it, and I would be praying extra hard that you would keep taking steps back. I wouldn’t see your attendance as any sort of witness FOR Catholism.

Thank you, Gabriel.
I try to use Catholic sites because that is the only way to understand Catholicism.I agree that in many ways, our differences are semantic, and maybe cultural. I think the two communions have their own cultures that have developed since the schism. I pray we can overcome it, because there is so much we share.

God bless you, as well.

That is exactly what concerned me about attending the Baptist church with my husband. I knew that people were thinking there was still hope for me to be “saved.” I had to get over that. I was worrying too much about what others thought and not about what was best for my family and its walk with God. If people pray for me to come to a stronger relationship with God, I’m thrilled. I, too, want to grow in that way. If someone prays for something that is not God’s will (i.e., leaving the Catholic Church), it won’t happen. My pride was a stumbling block. I was becoming offended because people would think I wasn’t saved (How dare they!). Whether they think I’m saved or not isn’t relevant, because they won’t be making that determination. Am I pleasing God? That’s the important question. And am I taking advantage of all the graces available to me from God? I do that through the sacraments. He has bestowed on me many graces, and I’m sure they are, in some part, coming through the masses I attend and the rosaries I pray.

We are called to be humble like Christ. When he was crowned with thorns and mocked as the King of the Jews, he remained silent. He knew who He was and didn’t need to argue the point with those who wouldn’t believe anyway. I meditate on that when I’m feeling frustrated by those who want to save me. I am thankful that they love me enough to have concern for my soul. I assure them that I have a strong love for Jesus and that is greatly nourished through the Catholic Church.

That it why for me it has to be a special reason for me to attend any service that is not Catholic. I also do not take part in their communion I do not want to give the impression of unity were it does not happen to be or that I am in anyway looking to convert or leave Christ Catholic Church.

As I have shared with a few other on my mother is Lutheran and I have attended services with her on numerous occasions. I know her minister very well and would be welcomed to receive communion when I attend there. I however do not as even though the Lutheran and Catholic understanding of the Eucharist is very similar, there is not a unity faith there and so I out of respect for them and In honoring my faith as a Catholic I can not receive there.

May the day come that all Christian can reunite under one banner again. Then we can be as Christ Prayed that we be one as He and the Father are one.

First, Scott, thank you for the respect you show, not only to our tradition, but also to yours, by both attending a Lutheran service and by not taking the Eucharist when there. I do the same when I visit a Catholic Church.

I fervently join my prayer to yours that the day comes soon when we can share the Eucharist together at your altar or mine.

Of course it is, at least from the POV of the CC. Some things are forbidden to Catholics at Protestant services, such as reception of Protestant Communion. But attending is certainly allowed - even encouraged. Provided that respect is shown by Catholics to Protestants, & vice versa - but that is (or it should be) no more than common courtesy. STM you should go ahead - provided the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays & certain other feasts is also honoured. 🙂

As usual, Gabriel of 12, a well thought-out post.

One thing I would like to say about your quote. It don’t matter that You and the Catholics both believe in The Eurcharist. To the Catholics, the Bread only changes when a Catholic Priest Consecrates it. So they don’t see you as the same as them. Or they don’t believe your pastor has the ability to cosecrate the wine and bread. I didn’t know if you realized that or not.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS NOT YOUR SALVATION-JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD IS, THE MESSIAH, THE ANNOINTED ONE!!! The people that have given their lives to God through Jesus is the Church!!! Work on what? You said I need to be more Catholic. Do I need to perfect the sign of the Cross. bow down to statues better, go to mass 7 days a week, go to confession 3 times a day, read through Church doctrines again, and again. I got much of it memorised. Whats good enough for you!!! Oh to be a robot and do and think exactly like you. No thanks my friend. Their is a world out their that needs Jesus and I’m going to do it.
Look Satan is a Master at deception. The Father of Lies. Deception is strange because to be truly decieved you don’t know it or it’s not deception. I want you to wake up!!! I don’t want to get into another subject, but ***faith in God comes by hearing the word of God. Romans 10. ***Paul said the Beareans were more noble than any other, because they studied the scriptures. So you believe in tradition and works. After all Paul said to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Do you fear and tremble to make sure you are right??? The Holy Spirit wrote the Bible and he said to do this!!! Paul was not speaking of working as in deeds as most of you would say, but make sure your doctrine is correct.
So lets look at a few things
  1. Every Mary apperance, Study them for your self, Points to Mary as Hope- Why do I hear so many Catholics take Jesus name in Vain, but would not dare speak a word in disrespect against Mary? Jesus said He would send another Comfortor. The Holy Spirit, and He would not speak of Himself, but would lift up Jesus. Do you know you have more Names for Mary than Jesus. Why? Jesus is our Savior alone. Now don’t say I miss Quote you.
  2. Call no man Father. I know your answer on this, I have studied Catholic Doctrine for over 10 years now. One thing is good about all this many people have truly believed in Jesus because they Have seen His prophesies fullfilled, by you doing what he said not to do.
  3. In the Last days they will forebid to marry. Hello!!! Jesus is not rebuking the world. He knows the world sins. He is rebuking an Institution who has a Form of Godliness, but denies the Power, Which is the finished work of the Cross!!! Jesus said it is finished!!! The Bible even says a Bishop is to be the Husband of one wife. Your tradition superseeds the Bible and you blindly except it. Why are their so many Homosexuals and pediphiles? Because those who want to marry go other places and minister, but those who have no interest in marriage in the first place and want great power, so great is the power to them. They go to the Catholic Church. Not all their are some awesome Priest.
  4. All occults Lord over the people. Jesus said the gentiles lord over each other but you are to be each others servent. Only Catholic Priest according to your doctrine. Have the power to Consencrate the sacrifice “Eucharist” You say this is vital and the REAL PRESENCE of Jesus. Now a protestant who has been properly Baptized in Water doesn’t have to be baptized again, but if they commit a mortal sin, according to James if you break one point of the law you transgressed the whole law, truthfully sin is sin, you have to confess to a priest or your sin is not forgiven and you are lost. That my friend is altimate power. Lording over people with fear of Hell at it’s best. The Bible says if you sin Jesus is fathful to forgive you. I am His Child he is my Father, Because of Jesus I can boldly go before the throne of grace and obtain mercy. He is my Father, Jesus is my Savior.
  5. Why a Statue? Thats not what Jesus or Mary looked like. If I put a picture of popeye on my wall and told your friends this is you they would laugh and say that is not my friend. I would say well it represents him. They would say it is a false representation. Paul said we worship the invisible God. Jesus said we are to worship in truth and in Spirit.
It’s not the same Jesus- Your salvation is diffrent and all main beliefs, but let us say it is. James says so you believe in one God, you do good, but even the Demons believe this.
It is my prayer that The Holy Spirit will show you the TRUTH. I could on to history, China, temples and buddist monks. Very simular when you study the 9 living religions of the world.
My heart hurts so bad when I see people so hungry for the Truth, but follow men insted of God. Jesus Christ Loves you so much and wants all of us to really know Him.
I say all this in Love!!! Many would like me kicked off, because they don’t like what I say. Gods will be done!!! I will gladly be kicked off for the truth. Most just don’t want to deal with it. Try to get a Mormon saved!!! They won’t listen. Why because insted of doing what is right they will listen to their teachers until death. You say no to Bible alone and I say that is exactly why we have so many occults. All things are to be tested by the Word of God it is sharper than any two edge sword. ANY!!! ANY other Written word or tradition. So go ahead and follow your phrophets. Me and my Family we will follow the LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!

One thing mentioned in the long post was dead-on, using the name of Our Lord in vain. Growing up in the South and as a Fundamentalist until I crossed the Tiber, I never, ever, heard anyone using the Lord’s name as an exclamation. The few Catholics I knew in my youth did not do that either.

I would hope that no one in the Church would sin that way, though I do hear it more and more as our society gets less proper. There is no way of knowing the religious affiliation of people in public, of course, but many rightly or wrongly read it as a Catholic thing. In addition to the breaking of a commandment, it brings scandal that has been noted by our separated brother.

First, Scott, thank you for the respect you show, not only to our tradition, but also to yours, by both attending a Lutheran service and by not taking the Eucharist when there. I do the same when I visit a Catholic Church.

Jon
Jon as always you are most kind in your post. Thank you

You say no to Bible alone and I say that is exactly why we have so many occults.
It is interesting that you say this because there are now somewhere between 25-30K different protestant denominations that all say yes to the Bible alone, yet all teach different doctrines and dogmas.

=denwiles;5215052]THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS NOT YOUR SALVATION-JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD IS, THE MESSIAH, THE ANNOINTED ONE!!!
Yes this is true the Church is the Bride of Christ.
The people that have given their lives to God through Jesus is the Church!!!
They are members of the Church so yes you are correct in away, But the Church would stand but its is more than that.
Work on what? You said I need to be more Catholic. Do I need to perfect the sign of the Cross.
I am not aware of there being a perfect way to make the sign of the Cross
bow down to statues better,
I know of no were in church doctrine that it is stated you must bow before a statue. I do bow out of respect for the life of the saint that represents. If I am asking for the intercession/ prayers of the Saint I may ever kneel and light a candle. agian non of which are mandatory.
go to mass 7 days a week,
would not hurt but Sunday attendance is all that is mandatory
.go to confession 3 times a day,
If you need confession that offten you really need to look at how you live your life. Remember that Jesus sent the Apostles out to hela the sick, FORGIVE SINS, and cast out demons.
read through Church doctrines again, and again. I got much of it memorized.
Maybe instead of memorizing you should study and pray on them that the whys and what for may be know to you
Oh to be a robot and do and think exactly like you. No thanks my friend. Their is a world out their that needs Jesus and I’m going to do it.
I can not imagine anything more wrong than to do without knowing why.

So lets look at a few things
  1. Every Mary apperance, Study them for your self, Points to Mary as Hope- Why do I hear so many Catholics take Jesus name in Vain, but would not dare speak a word in disrespect against Mary?
I would follow your advice a study them as they point to Mary telling us to follow her son. As for the talking of the Lords name in vain I would say that is not done by true Christians, Catholic or NOT
Jesus said He would send another Comfortor. The Holy Spirit, and He would not speak of Himself, but would lift up Jesus. Do you know you have more Names for Mary than Jesus. Why? Jesus is our Savior alone. Now don’t say I miss Quote you.
I have no idea what you are talking about here. So yes I would say you have miss Quoted.
  1. Call no man Father. I know your answer on this, I have studied Catholic Doctrine for over 10 years now. One thing is good about all this many people have truly believed in Jesus because they Have seen His prophesies fullfilled, by you doing what he said not to do.
And yet ST Paul referred to himself Father in his Epistles.
  1. In the Last days they will forebid to marry. Hello!!! Jesus is not rebuking the world. He knows the world sins. He is rebuking an Institution who has a Form of Godliness, but denies the Power, Which is the finished work of the Cross!!! Jesus said it is finished!!! ST Paul states that it would be better if non were to Marry. The Bible says a Bishop should be husband to no more than one wife. meaning that if widowed he is not to remarry. As for the rest of your remarks I will not dignify with answer.

  1. All occults Lord over the people. Jesus said the gentiles lord over each other but you are to be each others servent. Only Catholic Priest according to your doctrine. Read that Gospels the reason for the need for a Priest to
administer these sacraments is that Jesus gave the authority to the Apostles not to all the disciples.
  1. Why a Statue? Thats not what Jesus or Mary looked like. If I put a picture of popeye on my wall and told your friends this is you they would laugh and say that is not my friend. You need to study and pray on what the Church teaches instead of just reading and to use your own words memorizing. The Bible is the Word of God But the Bible says that there is more that has not been Written here.ie Tradition.

You know, the times I’ve gone to Protestant services, they feel so thin and superficial that I’d awfully glad to be Catholic. And to have the Holy Eucharist.

Yes, I do know that. One of the great things about the ongoing dialogue between Lutherans and Catholics is the growing respect for each other’s ministry. I think you might find this document quite interesting.
usccb.org/seia/koinonia.shtml
Let me know what you think of Cr. Ratzinger’s quote in paragraph 107.

Were Lutherans and Catholics able to iron out those issues dividing us (pray it happens)the issue of apostolic succession would be easily resolved.

Jon

You know, the times I’ve gone to Protestant services, they feel so thin and superficial that I’d awfully glad to be Catholic. And to have the Holy Eucharist.
Yep.

I was discussing this thread with my boyfriend who is Catholic as well. I had COMPLETELY forgotten THREE other weddings, two protestant, 1 a civil ceremony of 2 atheists. All of which were … flat.

I do, however, remember ALL of the Catholic weddings I’ve been to.

I say go. You sound like you are strong in your faith, but only you really know. The Church, as far as I know, doesn’t say anything about attending Protestant services as long as you fulfill your Sunday obligation and don’t take communion. As long as you are doing that, and there is no potential for this being a speed pump in your faith, I say go and enjoy your self. If it were me, I would go and bring my Rosary with me 😃

Look at it this way, at least you have parents who are still there for you and look as if they support your decision to convert. It could be worse. You could have parents like my wife’s father who would want nothing to do with you other than the opportunity to witness to your, “lost soul”.

God bless you and your wife.
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS NOT YOUR SALVATION-JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD IS
You will hear no argument from Catholics on this. Coincidentally though, I met my Lord and Savior in the Catholic Church 😉

God bless
