I’m concerned about being disrespectful to the sacredness of the Mass and distracting others.
I go to daily Mass (6:50 AM). I am a woodworker and most of my work clothes are well worn. It would be impossible for me financially to constantly invest in new looking clothes as it only takes a day or two for them to become worn-looking. Don’t compare yourself to those who are wearing better clothes; they may be retired or work in an office.

You may even be an inspiration to some and not realize it. It is easy for a lot of people to get to daily Mass. What they see is a person who obviously has made time for Christ in the middle of his day! That speaks louder than the condition of your clothes.😃

God will honor what is in your heart and knows that, even if it is not feasible to change, your desire and motivation is to please Him and to give Him honor and glory!

Whoops! Gotta get my patched up jeans and mahogany stained shirt on and get to Mass! (No kidding)

Seems to me we are trying to integrate God into our daily lives… Sunday Mass is somewhat more ceremonial… but daily Mass is a more intimate weaving of God into our lives.

So, if you are headed off to the supermarket and go to noon Mass first, then wear whatever you normally wear to the supermarket.

If it is between Mass times, and you stop off at church for a quick prayer… then wear whatever you are wearing at the time.

Et Cetera.

P.S. Jesus worked as a carpenter… what would Jesus wear?

I would think this question has been asked here before, but my search was not successful. If anyone can provide a link, it would be much appreciated. My question is about wearing work clothes to a week day Mass. In my work, I often get muddy or sweaty, or even get my clothes torn. Of course, I dress very casually. Sometimes the timing works out that I can make it to a daily mass in the middle of my day, but I don’t go because of how my clothes look. I have thought about keeping some clean clothes in the car for a quick-change if the opportunity arises. What do you think? Go to mass dirty, or go only if I have time to change clothes?
You have shown respect and consideration. Your intent is good. I would consider some kind of clean overcoat that you keep in the car. I do not know if anything is available without looking weird, maybe something similar to what people wear in technical labs. However, if a see someone dressed in work attire during mass i tend to think that they did not have the opportunity to change, and I rejoice to see one more person worshipping.

I wouldn’t worry about it a bit. If my father were alive and I could visit - even if only covered in mud - he would’ve been thrilled. I just can’t help think our Father in heaven is just as pleased, or more so, when we take the time to “visit” him.

The whole “disrespectful” dressing issue really relates to not taking some time and consideration when we have the time - or dressing in a manner that demostrates an “I don’t care” attitude. I think none of that is present in you situation.

Frankly, I think the whole dressing issue is very difficult in the individual situation because we don’t always know someone circumstances. We should dress “respectfully” but what that is cannot always easily be determined in the individual case.

When I was working in Downtown Detroit, one of the parishes had a noon Mass that I often attend.

During the spring\summer a number of Hispanic men would also attend. They worked doing lawncare\gardening for a number of the office buildings nearby.

They were usually dirty and sweaty, but we were all glad they were there worshiping with us.

It fact, it made for a wonderful micrcosim of the Church. There were lawyers in suits, secretaries, engineers, gardeners and homeless, all at the same Mass worshipping the same God.

Change of you can, but don’t let it stop you from going to Mass

The same standards as for Sunday don’t apply to daily Mass. As long as one is modestly dressed, whatever one is able to do given their state of life is fine. Personally, I’m an office worker and wear basically what I would wear on Sundays, but when I’m off from work and go to Mass, I wear whatever is appropriate for the activity that surrounds it as long as modesty is observed.

For example, a state dinner with the president is a very different style of dress than a working breakfast or a vacation at the ranch. . .

NObody go have fun and if you’re worried just sit in the back.

In regard to distracting others, I think it would be an inspiration to others. I am a WAHM, so I go every day w/ my child; it’s easy for me to fit it in my schedule.

I have the greatest respect for people who work outside the home and make God a priority by making time in their day to attend Mass. I would not be offended or distracted at all personally.

Thanks all for your replies. The majority said to go, and not worry about it. I think at least some of you assumed I was a man. I am actually a woman - does that change your answer at all?

Not a bit. I still say, go.

If you keep an elastic waisted long skirt (broomstick) and an oversized blouse-like item (as a “jacket” you can throw on top of whatever) you can actually slip the skirt over the pants and then let your pants fall to the ground in the parking lot!! Slip off your workshoes and slip on some slip-ons (also kept in the car)
I have a friend in a similar situation who does it all the time!

I always tell my daughter, if you know you are going to mass, you must dress appropriately (keep the skirt in the car and a big shirt to throw on top). If you have a chance that you weren’t expecting and are dressed at least modestly (which you should be ALL the time anyway!) go.

God bless you for your obvious effort!! AND concern!! YEAH!
Angel

If you knew this was the last mass you’d ever have the chance to attend, would you still not go in because you were muddy and afraid of what the others would think, or would you go in without thinking twice?

answer that and you have your answer.

Unless you are so exceptionally dirty that it would serve as a distraction to you and others, then by all means, go.

I am fortunate that I am able to attend daily Mass. There is a church that is a five minute walk from my office. On other days,(not Sundays) I just wear something clean and neat.
