I thought that was a done deal, and out of our hands…
I will sign it if that isn’t the case…but I heard on EWTN today that the man was already released…

If he has been released…take solice in the fact that Pope John Paul paid this man a visit…they had lots of conversation, and he forgave him…

Why on earth do you think that the government of Turkey should jump to the bidding of an internet petition?

He was given a life sentence in Italy for the assisination attempt. In the Jubilee year of the Church, Pope JP2 petitioned strongly to have him released, which the Italian government finally agreed to. At this point, he was given to Turkish authorities.

The man has paid his debt to society. Who are we to go against the wishes of JP2, while saying we’re doing this in his name? Honor the forgiveness of the late Holy Father.

Pope JP2 petitioned to have him pardoned in Italy, which was granted. He was in jail in Turkey on some other charges. So, our late Holy Father would disagree with the petition.

And yes, it’s highly unlikely that any government would pay the slightest attention to an internet petition. They are a dime a dozen, actually…

who is naive enough to think the Turkish government would respond to a petition signed by American or Western Christians to overturn an action that has already taken place?

The Holy Father has forgiven him - so that’s good enough for me.

The poor man, though I do not believe he is entirely sane.

After serving a life term in Italy (unlike in the USA, many countries consider life 20-25 years) he was transfered to Turkey to serve time for the murder of a journalist. Now it seems he has been released but is before a military tribunal for dodging the draft in Turkey back in the 1970s.

I pray that his release may be marked with peace and conversion. I also hope that he will be able to shed some light on all the conspiracy theories revolving around the assasination attempt.

Me three!

To sign this petition would fly in the face of the pope’s heartfelt forgiveness.

In any case a Vatican spokesman made it known quite some time ago that the Pope had personally intervened with the Italian government to have Agca released after the pardon.

According to a Vatican spokesman, the Pontiff personally intervened with Italian authorities to gain the release and pardon of Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turk who sought to kill him in 1981. The Pontiff, speaking to children at a Rome parish on Oct. 10, 1999, said the teachings of Christ instructed him to forgive Agca**. religion-cults.com/pope/pope-shot.htm**

Since he’s already been freed, there is no point in continuing this thread. CLOSED.
