In Volume 8 (2012-2013) of Letter & Spirit entitled Promise and Fulfillment: The Relationship Between the Old and New Testaments, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology,
there is an article by Leroy Huizenga on “The Tradition of Christian Allegory Yesterday and Today”
which has some interesting perspectives from St. Augustine, which I shall paraphrase as follows (from page 88 of the paperback volume)
1 The purpose of scripture study is to increase your faith, hope, and love.
The volume is great, packed with inspirational essays. I have the vague feeling that there’s more, perphaps a lot more, that could be said about the relationship between the Old and New Testaments.

- If you seem to have understood scripture in any way that has not increased your faith, hope, and love, then you have not understood the scripture.
