The demographic timebomb that ticks in Europe, that is counting down toward a “Eurabia” in the mid-to-late 21st century, is also ticking Down Under. If you poke around the website for Melbourne’s newspaper The Age, you’ll see a few articles addressing this.
  1. Our values or go home: Costello - Treasurer Peter Costello argued that Islamic sharia law is incompatible with Australian law, and therefore those who would like to live under sharia would be better off leaving Australia altogether. Predictably, outrage has followed the Treasurer’s comments, accusing him of using “wedge politics”.
  2. PM backs Muslim comments - Aussie Prime Minister John Howard is standing by his Treasurer and refusing calls to censure Costello for his comments.
  3. “My comments were clumsy” - opinion writer Danna Vale reargues–after charges of racism–that non-Muslim Australia is “almost aborting [itself] out of existence”, in contrast to the very high birthrates in the Muslim immigrant community. Furthermore, the high unemployment rate among young Muslims only further segregates them from mainstream Australian society.
Gee, does that 3rd point remind anyone here of some European countries we could name?

Just to clarify one or two things on your third point - Danna Vale is actually a Member of Parliament here in Australia, not just an opinion writer, and she actually made those comments IN Parliament during our recent debates on who should have control of approving the abortion drug RU486.

Her comments were offered among those of other MPs as to why approval of the drug should/should not be made easier - it was in this context that she was saying that non-Muslim Australians may be ‘aborting ourselves out of existence’. It wasn’t purely a swipe against Muslims, though it looks that way, rather a swipe against the prevalence and ease of abortions, which will perhaps be made easier if RU486 is allowed into the Australian market.

Thanks for the clarification. Being 10,000 miles removed from Australia (or however far it is from Chicago to Melbourne), I will freely admit to ignorance regarding Danna Vale’s work outside of her opinion piece for The Age. From her writings I kind of gathered that she was warning more on the high abortion rate rather than the Muslim birth rate, although I didn’t pick up on the RU486 angle.

I think the likes of Vale and Costello see what’s happened in Europe–particularly France–this past year and fear the same could happen in Australia in the next ten to fifteen years, if not sooner: a marginalized and unassimilated–but rapidly growing–Muslim minority rioting and causing civil unrest.

Islam aside, however, low birth rates are a serious problem in developed countries worldwide. We’ve all seen the the projections that show that the European nations that don’t have significant immigration can expect to see their populations fall by 25-40% over the next 50 years. Mark Steyn, I think, said it best in one of his columns:“A society that has no children has no future.”

In five years’ time, how many Jews will be living in France? Two years ago, a 23-year-old Paris disc jockey called Sebastien Selam was heading off to work from his parents’ apartment when he was jumped in the parking garage by his Muslim neighbor Adel. Selam’s throat was slit twice, to the point of near-decapitation; his face was ripped off with a fork; and his eyes were gouged out. Adel climbed the stairs of the apartment house dripping blood and yelling, “I have killed my Jew. I will go to heaven.”

Is that an gripping story? You’d think so. Particularly when, in the same city, on the same night, a Jewish woman was brutally murdered in the presence of her daughter by another Muslim. You’ve got the making of a mini-trend there, and the media love trends. Yet no major French newspaper carried the story.

Im proud of australias liberal government and i continue to support them in everything they do.

Hello,

I think comments by Vale and Costello were made for two very different reasons, Vale trying to stop the evil abortion drug and Costello, so as to gain support as he hopes one day to be PM and for him being unpopular, the ‘muslim card’ is a winner. Though I must admit that I am a Liberal party voter (its similar to the republican party in the USA, but religion rarely plays a role in irreligious Australian society.

God Bless
God Bless Australia
God Bless Collingwood!!! Go Pies!!!
