The Australian Government has made moves to protect the name of Australia’s first saint from corporations. Which means if any Corporation wishes to use her name they must seek special ministerial permission. And not just her official name. But also variants on her name. . This will not impede any Catholic school or Official Catholic Charity, from using her name or image. It just means that we will not be seeing any secular corporations cashing in on her new title by making "Saint Mary " cookies. And other such things.

In keeping with the rules of this forum, here is a current news link about the topic:
The Federal Government says it will force companies to get ministerial approval before using or making a reference to Mary MacKillop in their name.
The only other individual Australian’s name with similar protection is Sir Donald Bradman, according to a statement from Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s office.
The amendments to the Corporations Regulations Act mean a company could be blocked from calling itself a name that includes “Mary MacKillop” or “Saint MacKillop”.

BTW, for anyone curious (as I was) Sir Donald Bradman was a cricket player during the first half of the 20th century, and regarded as perhaps the greatest batsman of all time.

The “Australian Government” is probably desperate to hold onto the “Catholic” vote.
An unholy alliance of an anti-life Australian Labor Party, The Greens (!), and some bought-out “Independents” wouldn`t give “two hoots” for the (true) significance of Saint Mary of The Cross.

The Order the saint founded doesnt impress any more, either. If anything, it seems to be ashamed of certain aspects of her life: eg her nuns habit, and its insistence on calling her “Mary MacKillop” and “Saint Mary MacKillop”, rather than “Mother Mary of The Cross” and “Saint Mary of The Cross”.

There`s “Virgin Blue” Airlines here…

I can’t imagine most Australians being either so tacky or so devoutly Catholic as to seek to produce inappropriate St Mary MacKillop-themed merchandise. Everything I’ve seen so far is very tasteful - rosaries, holy cards and the like.

No ‘perhaps’ about it. Bradman’s batting feats have never been approached. To put his carreer into perspective, when he retired his batting average was 99.94. The closest anyone has come to that is South African Graham Pollock who played in the 1960’s. Pollock’s average was just a smidgen over 60. Bradman had his career interupted by WW2, just when he was breaking records at a rate of knots. After WW2 he still broke records at a rate of knots. Countless of his records still stand. Bradman also played golf off scratch, won a State squash championship, was considered by many as a capable enough tennis player to win Wimbledon and was a champion Billiards player. He was perhaps the greatest sportsman to have ever lived…

Yes they are going to try to cling to every Catholic vote they can get there hands onjust so they can push their pro Abortion, pro euthanasia, pro gay rights agenda and at the same time actually not draw people to the life of Mary Mckillop by stopping the name from being used.

I presume the government is doing this at the request of the Josephite Sisters and/or the Australian bishops who would be ultimately in charge of whether to approve or disapprove any proposed use of the name . Just as they did it for the Bradman name at the request of the Bradman family, with the Bradman Foundation holding the power to approve any use of the name Bradman. It’s pretty far fetched to imagine that this is some fiendishly clever government conspiracy to minimise any attention paid to our first Saint by ironically pretending to prevent unauthorised commercial exploitation of her name.

Unfortunately his personal character was far from the greatest. He was a Freemason who cold-shouldered and actively and unfairly discriminated against Catholic players as a captain and later in his several decades as a selector.

Saints are there for us to ask for their help and pray for us, not for corporations to make money out of them and make their bank managers happy. I agree in using the name of saints for charitable organizations to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters, built orphanages for unwanted children and help educate our young children. We already have one organization like that with St Vincent De Paul who have been helping our community and doing a very good job of it.

Do you think this present “Government” would shed any tears if Catholicism were wiped off the face of the earth?
But there are still some very foolish Catholics whod "vote Labor", no matter what. Like the elderly ALP voter who said to my parents back in the 1980s: "If it was good enough for Charlie, its good enough for me.". “Charlie” was her late husband who died in about 1950!

The ALP that Curtin and Chifley knew no longer exists, and hasnt for decades. Whitlam helped to make sure of that! Among other "initiatives", hes the one who removed the words “Christian Names” from Commonwealth Government forms. All in the name of fair play and equality, of course!
Just on two years back, we were given a sermon on Julian The Apostate`s (similar name!) schemes to destroy the Church.
Deja vu!

You couldn`t trust this lot!

And as if Catholics didn’t discriminate against Freemasons back in the ‘good old days’ either. For your information, Bradman’s team mates Lindsay Hassett, Bill O’Reilly, Jack Fingleton and Stan McCabe were Catholics and the Bradman museum in Bowral is run by a Catholic friend of Bradman’s!! As a man of integrity and honour, Sir Donald Bradman was without peer, regardless of his religious pursuasion, or maybe in spite of it. And he was still the greatest sportsman ever.

Do you think this present “Government” would shed any tears if Catholicism were wiped off the face of the earth?
No. But that doesn’t mean that EVERY action of the Government (why the scare quotes? Do you not think it even is a government?) is part of some sinister conspiracy to destroy the Church, even an action which is apparently intended to benefit the Church and done at the Church’s request.

And as if Catholics didn’t discriminate against Freemasons back in the ‘good old days’ either.
And the relevance of that is…???
For your information, Bradman’s team mates Lindsay Hassett, Bill O’Reilly, Jack Fingleton and Stan McCabe were Catholics
What on earth makes you think I don’t already possess that information? As I said his Catholic teammates suffered unjust discrimination from Bradman, especially O’Reilly who had the added “black mark” of being of Irish descent.
and the Bradman museum in Bowral is run by a Catholic friend of Bradman’s!!
It is run by a Catholic who knew Bradman. Bradman had no Catholic friends.
As a man of integrity and honour, Sir Donald Bradman was without peer, regardless of his religious pursuasion, or maybe in spite of it.
He had very little integrity or honour. He was an egotist, a bigot, a racist and a snob.
And he was still the greatest sportsman ever.
Yes, just as I said. But he was no gentleman.

I don’t think I have ever come across a more misinformed post in all my life. It is most obvious that it is certainly not Sir Donald Bradman who was the bigot.

Go to this ABC Lateline Transcript. I vividly recall seeing it. Gerard Henderson, highly respected academic, writer and social commentator and Bradman’s Biographer, Roland Perry, firmly dispelled the very issues you seem to have imbued as being 'gospel.

Take this -
ROLAND PERRY: I just want to make a very good point there.
I think this ridiculous attitude about him being anti-Catholic – I tracked that one down.
I would have been very happy to put that in the book if it was true in the sense of exposing a bigotry.
He had no bigotry.
If you have look at the 1936, 1937 team, you’ll find he selected seven Irish Catholics.
He fought very hard for one Laurie Nash that the conservative board did not want in the team.,
You can see in the selfless attitude in terms of the Bradman Museum – turning his name over to that – and the fact that that’s a charitable trust – he gets not a cent from that nor do his dependants.
Just think of that.
I wrote And as if Catholics didn’t discriminate against Freemasons back in the ‘good old days’ either. and you can’t see the relevance of that statement?!! In other words, sectarian discrimination was part of the cultural milieu in those ‘good old days’, yet you attempt to blame just one party to that sectarian rift. That’s bias, if not bigotry. Bradman rose above that despite the cultural context within which he grew up, because his first love was Cricket and he did his duty to the game. The Bradman museum was not simply run by a Catholic Bradman “knew”. It was run by one Richard Mulvaney, who became a close personal friend of Bradman’s. So much for Bradman’s anti-Catholic bias preventing him from having “any Catholic friends” as you wrote. On a personal level, one of my uncles was best friends with Australian Test Cricketer Arthur Morris. According to Morris, a finer gentleman than Bradman never walked the earth. As for O’Reilly, Bradman in no way discriminated against him. O’Reilly was a difficult character at best and has been recorded as having great admiration for Bradman. Jack Fingleton, the other Test cricketer who supposedly had an acrimonious relationship with Bradman, has a brother who is a Marist Priest. His name is Wally and he is on record as saying their was no religious discrimination between Bradman and his brother and religion did not play a role in their relationship. The supposed ‘rift’ occured when Bradman asked Fingleton to take first strike against the English Bodyline bowling. Fingeleton accused Bradman of cowardice. Now, that’s a laugh. And so are comments by those who attempt to deride a great sportsman. You need to do a great deal more homework on this subject.

When you look at the credentials of most of the members of this outfit from a Catholic perspective, theres no choice. J. Gillards membership of EMILY`s List is a good start; and we all know about the Tasmanian R. Brown, and the agenda of his party.

As said earlier, they`d be after as many “Catholic” votes as they can get, along with any others they can get hold of.

As far as benefitting the Church goes: thats a double-edged sword. Think back to World Youth Day 2008. The NSW State "Government" spent millions of dollars of taxpayers money on it.
The dust had hardly settled on WYD, when that “Government” announced that it would be spending taxpayers money to help sponsor the so-called "Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras" in Sydney, the following year. We Catholics could hardly complain......could we? We should have, though. Now theyve voted-in same-sex adoption!

CS Lewis said: "When you sup with the Devil, use a long spoon.".
Its dangerous to receive money from a spiritually hostile political regime, like this lot is! Its dirty money, with strings attached.

Youre right, of course: not every act of this crowd will be bad......but how long do you reckon itll take `em to redefine marriage to include same-sex “unions”?

What a laugh. The ABC would be the last place I would go in order to become informed about anti-Catholic bigotry. And I repeat, I did not in any way attempt to deride him as a sportsman - on the contrary. I deride only his smallness of character.

And I certainly did not " attempt to blame just one party to that sectarian rift". I pointed out that Bradman was a bigot. The fact that some Catholics of his generation were sectarian is irrelevant. I was discussing Bradman’s character, not anybody else’s.

Bradman was in his 80s when the museum opened, he had no dependents and was a wealthy man.

And Bradman did not select the 1936-37 team.

OK, that’s an argument why the Sisters and the bishops should not have asked the government to protect St Mary’s name. But it doesn’t mean that the government is protecting St Mary’s name in order to destroy the Church as you claimed.

I think that is the most frightening part on all of this. I hope and pray that the Holy Spirit enlightened the mind of these people and open their hearts and start following the teachings of the church. The church is being persecuted not only in Australia but around the world. This is the time for all Catholics to unite in prayers that we may be saved. Let us all start asking our Blessed Mother’s help and pray the rosary daily.

Let us all start asking our Blessed Mother’s help and pray the rosary daily.
Our Lady, Help of Christians,
Saint Francis Xavier,
Saint Therese of The Child Jesus: Patron Saints of Australia, and
Saint Mary of The Cross:
PRAY FOR US!

Saint Joseph, Patron of the Church:
PRAY FOR US!

And you think that means that the government is not really a government? Do we not have any government in NSW or in Australia?
Theyre not fit to govern; and as a Catholic, i ve no choice but to say that. Look up their abortion, cloning etc voting records in the Family Life International Australia Voting Guide for the recent election. Only three then-sitting ALP MPs had acceptable voting records in those areas! That includes the Senate! No need to mention The Greens; the worst enemy the environment has ever had!

Forum rules prevent complete honesty in expressing what i think of these “Governments”.

Pity you didnt quote the whole sentence. ill rest my case on the part you didn`t quote.
