Australian Priest Claims Jesus Was Not God
Jesus Christ was not God, and Mary was not a virgin, according to a controversial new book written by an Australian Catholic priest.
“This whole matter regarding Jesus being God … not only does violence to my own intelligence, but must be a sticking point,” Father Peter Dresser writes in his new book, “God Is Big. Real Big.”
“For millions of people trying to make some kind of sense of the Christian religion … No human being can ever be God, and Jesus was a human being. It is as simple as that.”
Dresser claims Joseph was Jesus’s father, Mary was not a virgin – and actually had six children – and that the story of the resurrection should not be taken literally.
Dresser’s book has angered conservative Catholics across Australia.
“The Council of Nicaea settled the question that Christ was God in 325, so he is 1700 years out of date," Sydney priest Anthony Robbie said. “The rest is a regurgitation of every discredited 19th-century liberal Protestant German cliche in the book.”

Fr. Z took the story on as well.

This is the same locale were invalid baptisms are given out like candy. There are some priests there who have given themselves over to heresy completely. Why did they even become priests in the first place? What was their “formation” like?

PRAY PRAY PRAY.

Update: The book is online. Read at your own risk: peterdresser.wordpress.com/

Chapter 5 is where he denies Jesus is God (or that Jesus thought himself to be God).

This kind of thing just makes me want to cry. Our dear Lord gave us so much and so many just continue to spit in His face. The fact of it being a priest is incomprehensible to me. It’s like His disciples deserting Him all over again. It must be such a grief to His Precious Heart.
I can’t bring myself to read this book but thank you for pointing out it’s obvious danger.

What does having the book online tell us?

That he can’t get people to buy it so he’s making it available for nothing.

Does this priest have a bishop? What’s a bishop’s job again?

New headline:

“Manualman claims Australian Priest is a Heretic.”

(presuming the article to be true, of course)

Do you suppose this so called priest is officiating at Mass? What blasphemy.

Pope Paul VI was correct-the smoke of satan HAS entered our Church.Time for this heretic to be excommunicated.

You’d think he’d realize that he’s clearly not the first to make those suggestions, he probably won’t be the last, and that it’s pointless to bother with those suggestions to begin with.

So someone doesn’t believe that Jesus is God. Nothing new there.

The only question is, why is this person a priest? And when will he be defrocked?

Folks -

I have an obvious disagreement with the assertions in this book. But, I fail to see the ‘danger’ it poses.

You are probably thinking, “huh”? Allow me to explain:
  1. Those who are secure in their faith that Jesus truly was the Divine Incarnate, Son of God in the flesh, truly human and truly divine are either (a.) not going to bother reading this; or, (b.) will read it through the prism of disproving it.
  2. Those that will read this and can be swayed are looking for justification for beliefs they already held. These folks do not truly believe in God-in-the-flesh. They are going to believe this dribble no matter what you or I say.
Besides, if you do a quick walk through the philosophy and religion section of any major university’s bookstore or read through any of the major periodicals, you will see that this book - at best - is merely just one miniscule addition to the long list of heretical literature out there on the subject.

Is this a big story? Not in my opinion. There have been priests before that have espoused ideas such as this and there will be many more in the future. To me, it is kind of like the guy standing in the street with the sign that reads, “God is dead”.

Right, buddy… And, hell just froze over. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

Curious story, yes. Bothersome, yes. But, we need to keep things in perspective.

Interesting that the local bishop has not commented on it or disciplined the priest. Now, that is disturbing and dangerous…

The priest who profess that Jesus is not God and that Mary was not a virgin, is by such profession itself got himself excommunicated. The faithful should sever association with him, and the mass he offer is not a mass at all, and hence the faithful need not attend his mass or hear his sermon. He is as good as a non believer, and a follower of Judas the traitor. If he belongs to any religious order and the religious order continues association with him that religious order is also by the same reason nonecllesiastical.

Wasn’t there this guy named Arius, some time ago, that had similar ideas?

The funny thing about heresies is that they keep coming back, the juicy ones, in different forms throughout the centuries.

How is it that this man is still a priest? How is it he was ever ordained in the first place? I don’t understand this whole thing.

I hope he is honest enough to leave the priesthood. No that he is out of the closet as a non-Christian, he should find another line of work. I guess he is just trying to make a few bucks on the way out the door,.

I agree that the 2 groups you mentioned will either accept or reject this heresy based on their knowledge or ignorance of the Truth. I do wonder about the millions of poorly catachized and those with no leanings one way or the other when they first hear this stuff. It seems that since it is from a priest some people might grant it more weight than it deserves. There are certainly priests that teach all kinds of odd things that have followings.
I really don’t get why he stays a priest in a Church that teaches the opposite of what he says he believes and allowing him to continue to teach it under the guise of a priest only confuses people.
I don’t mean to be unkind but to continue to allow priests to teach and lead people astray only makes those who want to live according to the Church teachings wonder what in the heck is going on with the bishops. I have heard it called being charitable to them, but at some point right is right and wrong is wrong and if you love the True Church it’s sometimes discouraging to hear so much rubbish come out of the mouths of those that are supposed to be serving Her and yet they continue to receive their livelihood from Her.

Church row escalates as priest denies Jesus was God

On the line for parishioners of St Mary’s and several other parishes in Queensland and NSW are fundamental church doctrines such as who can celebrate Mass, whether Jesus Christ was God, whether Mary had as many as six children, the bodily Resurrection, and the need for sacramental celebrations for same-sex marriages.

In a booklet being sold for $20, a NSW priest, Peter Dresser of Coonamble in the Diocese of Bathurst, insists Jesus was not God and did not think he was God. The booklet is on sale at two Brisbane parishes: St Mary’s and the Wooloowin/Windsor/Kalinga Parish of outspoken Brisbane priest Richard Pascoe.

In God is Big. Real Big! Father Dresser – who prefers to be known as Peter – says: “This whole matter regarding Jesus being God … not only does violence to my own intelligence, but must be a sticking point for millions of people trying to make some kind of sense of the Christian religion … No human being can ever be God, and Jesus was a human being. It is as simple as that.”

Interesting…
  1. Fail to read the work at hand (Bible)
  2. Write an opinion on the unread work
  3. Committ a self-sealing argument fallacy
