Australian Prime Minister - Anglican - takes Catholic Communion

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd takes Communion at Catholic Church. Rudd was raised Catholic, but attends an Anglican Church weekly. There is talk in Australia that we will get our first saint by Christmas, with rumours that Mary MacKillop is to be canonised. Rudd has been accused of trying to take some kind of credit (amazing - but he has a fair amount of hubris) for the canonisation, and the suspicion is that he attended Blessed Mary MacKillop’s chapel on Sunday in an attempt to associate himself with the canonisation.

For non-Australians, Rudd is the leader of the centre-left Labor Party, and “the Coalition”, consisting of the Liberal and National Parties, is the centre-right opposition. The leader of the Liberal Party is the recently elected Tony Abbott, who is possibly the most faithful Catholic politician in Australian politics.
 
We have had things like this done in the US too…I would never vote for anyone that deliberately pulled a stunt like this

It just shows how little respect they have for anyone but themselves
 
Hi Lily. She’s not a saint just yet though, is she? I mean, she’s now eligible to become a saint, but it hasn’t happened yet - is that right? I don’t really know how the whole process works…

She’s more than eligible - the only thing that remains is the formal declaration (canonisation ceremony) which will happen of an absolute certainty, and in the near future.

It’s a bit like being a Prime Minister-elect or a President-elect in that period before they are formally sworn in - they certainly are PM or Pres in every way that counts.

I suspect he attends the Anglican church as I think his wife is Anglican. He’s technically still Catholic, so he is entitled to take communion.

I don’t know if I’d call this grand standing for political gain in this case. Australians aren’t Americans, and we’re a bit too cynical to be impressed by a politician claiming lip service to the Christian faith, unless they’re very outspoken about it, which is rare over here. However they’d need to practice what they preach before we’ll really believe them.

Personally I haven’t taken much notice of the whole thing. Mary McKillop is the important one in this development, and not a politician, regardless of party or creed.

There’s a good chance she’ll be canonised before the year is over, from what I’ve heard around and about.
 
I know little or nothing about Australian politics but I assume that a nominally catholic politician in a non Christian country ( which is what Australia in in reality) could not have climbed all the way to the top of the greasy pole without making it clear he is pro abortion. Would I be right?
