I’ve seen the evening news coverage on this for the last two days, and it is nothing short of shocking how little they are conveying information.
Today, they only selected the juiciest bit and twisted it, “Pell had no interest in claims about George Risdale,” then proceeded to show him saying this, and a clip of him saying (at departure from the hearings) of “The truth helping.”
It would be very nice if they’d be more open, but obviously that isn’t the purpose of the media.
A couple of other things to point out:
- When on trial, I presume you are being asked questions completely out of the blue. So the answers you give aren’t always going to be worded in the best possible sense.
- The whole issue with the “pedophile priests,” is that the criminal aims to not get caught. Obviously, a lot of people, including clergymen serving with the accused, would not be aware of what was happening.
If they were, then perhaps they ought to let that on, if only for the closure of surviving victims, and so we can get a better picture of the problem and how to fix it.
- You cannot rely on rumours to carry out your duties; some of the people who visited Rome have said “It was a common topic in the pub,” well, I’m sorry, but the pub isn’t a place you can use as a credible source of information… First of all, alcohol is involved. Second, gossip.
This would be equivalent to Obama using media reports of “increased tensions” in North Korea as an excuse to invade, rather than relying on his own intelligence information.
- The media neglects that thus far, 1,700 institutions have been involved with these proceedings. 1000 are related to religious institutions of some form or another, although I don’t think we’ve seen the end of abuse in secular institutions being covered up either, unfortunately.
- Another fact the media has neglected, is that the rate of abuse (4%), particularly during the 1930’s-1980’s when the majority of the cases had occurred was no higher than the general population. Why did it happen in the Church? Opportunity. Tell me what schools kids went to? Where homeless/orphaned children went?
Where abused people’s went?
Who ran hospitals?
Programs for the homeless?
*I want to stress here that this is NO reason for the coverups, reshuffling and general stupidity that has taken place. What I want to stress is the FACTS. The fact is that these men had very easy, unrestricted access to children.
It was a product of the time. We now have better protection for children in environments where unfamiliar adults are in charge. *
Today these same people likely are not Priests, but engaged in other secular employment where they potentially have access to children.
Government background-checks now in place may or may not help. But this 4% or so still exist and are still at large in our community. Every so often we come to learn of grave misdeeds taking place, but still it is very covert and hidden from our communities.
The final position I want to make is that the media has ALSO neglected to inform us that the Perth Archdiocese is the first in Australia to implement significant changes to protect ALL vulnerable persons in the Church-run institutions.
We now have a comprehensive plan that includes preventative measures and measures to assist people who may have been abused (representatives in each parish). This facility is also available if people have reason to believe abuse is happening at home, and the statistics of domestic abuse are shocking, and receive little airtime in the media.

Overall, I’m extremely disappointed in the media coverage of this issue. People are being spoon-fed the wrong information, as usual. Like much of the media establishment, Australia’s is incredibly focused on bias, viewership and kissing the behinds of the left-wing.
It would be nice if we had THE TRUTH presented nightly, but I guess people don’t like hearing the truth, because it would disappoint them.
