Austrian priests to disobey pope
Vienna - More than 250 Catholic priests in Austria are ready to disobey the pope and allow women to preach, the head of a progressive clergy platform confirmed on Wednesday.

Helmut Schueller said the Priests’ Initiative he leads has been pushing for admitting women and married men into the clergy for years, without results.

The movement published a manifesto earlier this month, and its members have let trained laymen and female religion teachers preach.

Time for the Holy Father to get out the Ban Hammer. Nothing sends a message like a mass excommunication.

However diplomacy would probably be a good step before that, maybe he can visit Austria to address the situation personally?

Sometimes people are so silly to think that they know what do to better than Rome.
 
In 2004, Austria had about 1500 priests (diocesan and religious). Assuming the number of priests is approximately the same today, 250 priests in open dissent is a sizable proportion - approximately 17%.

And another protestant church is born.
 
Excommunicate them.We have plenty of priests in Africa and the East who can take their place.
 
They should be excommunicated as should other “Catholics” who refuse to follow the basic rules of the faith. It’s a no brainer.

Yep. Kick `em out; and make them look elsewhere for a feed. Why should they be allowed to be parasites, sucking the life out of their own Mother?
 
Trouble is, they have apparently already excommunicated themselves latae sententiae under Canon 1364. Formed more than a year ago, this group has been public and obstinate in casting doubt on the Church‘s teaching about women in the priesthood; by any reasonable standard, their actions fit the definition of heresy contained in Canon 751.

Asked about possible consequences by ORF journalists, a canon law expert from the University of Vienna replied: „More can happen theoretically than will happen in practice.“ That sums up in a sentence the way the Austrian bishops respect the rights of the faithful. By doing nothing, they – and ultimately Rome, if Rome does nothing – dump in the laps of Austria‘s Catholics the responsibility of deciding whether or not docility to the teaching of their shepherds is safe.

Vienna: Another sacrilegious “Western Mass”

If your personal social, economic, religious views make you perfectly in line with the Democrats’ platform, why enroll in the GOP and try to change it from within? In other words, if you don’t believe in transubstantiation, papal infallibility, think that women should be allowed to become priestesses, are pro-gay-“marriage”, why not become a Methodist or whichever of the many Protestant denominations that embrace your values?
 
@1holycatholic: The sacrilegious Western Mass in Vienna, scheduled for June 26, was cancelled – proof positive that it helps when the international blogosphere and online Catholic community turn up the heat. No problem for the club that had invited Fr. Faber to hold this Mass: they just asked a clergyman from the Old Catholics, a sect split off from the Church in 1870 which has priestesses and quasi-Anglican views and rites. Turns out that this service at the Danube Island fest had been held as an Old Catholic service for 22 years before they ever thought of inviting a Catholic celebrant.

FWIW, Cardinal Schönborn is calling the priests who started this „pastors‘ initiative“ on the carpet and says he is preparing a letter to all the priests of his diocese. Pray that he puts some bite in it. This should have been done a year ago when this „initiative“ was first signed.

As I recall, Blessed Pope John Paul II wrote fully on the reasoning for male and female responsibilities in conducting liturgy. He was a brillant man and God’s Vicar on earth. He reasoning is most reasonable and should be followed by all Catholic Priest if they wish to represent the Catholic Church.

I am sure Pope Benedict XVI will respond appropriately.

Some years ago a nun from South Africa went to Spain where she was ordained by an Austrain "bishop and joined the “group”. She subsequently became a bishop. I wonder if her “order” has anything to do with this new rebellious group?

Not enough, they need to be cut off publically so the world knows that the CC means business.
for too long priests and bishops are doing whatever pleases them thus bringing confusing and shame to the Church. the Apostles would never tolerate such a disobedience.
