I use the paradigm “Scripture interprets Scripture”, as in when there’s an obscure passage of Scripture I go to another “clearer” passage to support my view?

I think not. :nope:

When there’s an obscure passage of Scripture, I go to the Church.
And has the Church infallibly defined 1 Cor. 15:29?

Did John fail in his stated purpose for writing the letter?
I would say, yes, Iggy.

If he states that what he has written is ALL that we need to be saved, and I go and preach ONLY what is in John’s Gospel, I will have failed to nourish His Flock with the entire word of God.

With respect as always, that seems rather hazy… Cause this stuff is said to develop too, hence I find it hard to see this Tradition as being Apostlic anymore. It seems Traditon is more what the church says is there as oppossed to anything we can clearly see.

I assume you are referring to the time from Abraham etc? Cause if it’s tradition in the second temple period, the Lords great many passages rebuking it would make that seem rather clear on what is thought of it and it’s relationship as subservient to scripture.

And as always, the same respect is returned. If it develops how does that remove the Apostolic aspect? Would you not say the church of 325 & 381 gave a deeper and more developed understanding of the two doctrines: Trinity & Incarnation in comparison to the 12? Does it negate the 12 in shape or form?

There is no doubt that there is more to God’s word than that, esp. in regards to the Christian life. Your specific question, however, was does all one need for salvation John’s gospel. The answer to that is yes, because God, through John, says so. “But these things are written that you may believe and by believing you may have life in His name.”

And yet St. Peter says that* baptism* now saves us. :hmmm:

That’s the problem, isn’t it, with taking verse outside of the lens of the faith which gave us these verses?

Iggy:

But that brings up a concern or question. If one can use John Gospel’s alone would not that in a sense establish the ground of Sola John? Isn’t that in a sense going a bit further than Sola Scriptura?

No, it wouldn’t, because that would be operating on the premise that all one needs for the entirety of the Christian faith is salvation. I am narrowing it down to the kernel of the topic that John addresses in the purpose for writing what he is writing.

Maybe I am not understanding you. Are stating on can strictly depend on one Gospel for salvation? What about Jonh 21:25:

25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

There undoubtedly are, and that is what the rest of the New Testament is for. However, John specifically states that he records what Jesus said so that those who read his gospel will believe that Christ is the Son of God, and thereby, receive eternal life. Why would I suppose that John is lying or was deficient in this purpose?

No by all means, I would never say John is lying or pulling our legs. But would you include the other Gospels as well?

Yes absolutely. But yes, one could be converted unto eternal life just from believing in Christ through John’s testimony.

Yeah…I would say John the Apostle is a very reliable source, since he was there-through thick and thin. 👍

Actually John is my favorite Gospel of all the four. Love it!

One word is all we need.

One single Word from our Lord and Savior

[bibledrb]Matthew 8:8[/bibledrb]

In Him.

Well that doesn’t make any sense at all. So, yeah, it doesn’t work LoL
Using Scripture to refute your personal interpretation of Scripture doesn’t make sense?

One can only use Scripture to *support *one’s position? Never to refute?

When did that tradition start? 😉
