Having seen the bad and inaccurate translation that ICEL made, is it likely that ICEL changed it to being an introduction to the Memorial Acclamation instead?
Aside from the ICEL, if English changes enough, that wouldn’t be all that extreme. But the Pope himself probably wouldn’t change a particular vernacular. The question is not whether the Pope had the authority to change the liturgy, but whether the Pope has the authority to change to very words of consecration.
i.e. - does the Pope have the authority to change the words of consecration from “this is my body” to “large pepperoni pizza please”.
I say no.
However, if we just deal with the Latin and if we base our argument on De Defectibus, I suppose one Pope can change the words HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM to, say, HAEC EST ENIM CARO MEA (For this is My Flesh), let the translators deal with it, and it would be okay. But that’s my opinion.
