I have a question—what is the difference between these things?

Auxiliary bishop
Titular archbishop
Archbishop

What does an auxiliary bishop do? Is there a limit to how many there can be?

An auxilairy bishop is not the ordinary bishop of a diocese like a regular bishop or archbishop is. (An archbishop is the head of a larger see - such as Chicago - and also has a certain degree of oversight responsibilities in his larger provincial area beyond his personal diocese.) The auxilary bishop is an assistant to the ordinary in a diocese which requires more episcopal service (confirmations and all). Most major dioceses have some auxiliaries, therefore. The Vatican does like to limit the number a bit and will get upset if the ordinary asks for too many assistants. But if the diocese can justify their service, then the pope will appoint them. Since a bishop does need to be, by his nature, the head of a diocese, these auxilairy bishops are appointed as titular (basically honorary) heads of historical dioceses which no longer exist as established ecclesial comunities.

Good point to remember is that an Auxiliary Bishop may or may not be a coadjutor. A Coadjutor Bishop assumes the responsibility of being the Ordinary of the Diocese when the current Bishop leaves, retires, or dies. An Auxiliary could take over, or he could just always stay an Auxiliary.

An Auxiliary is an assistant to a Bishop or Archbishop in a diocese without the right of succession.

A Co-adjutior (sp?) is an assistant to a Bishop or Archbishop in a diocese with the right of succession.

An Arch-Bishop is a the Bishop of a large and important diocese. He can also be the Metropolitan over a province.

A Titular Bishop is a bishop assigned to a job that does not have an actual diocese to care for. The Titular See is one of the ancient Sees which today only exist on paper. Many of the Cardinals in Rome who have jobs in the Roman curia are Titular Bishops.
