My question is for those that do/would like to attend the EF form of Mass;
Does your Parish offer the EF?
If not how far do you have to go to find an EF Mass?
How many Parishes in your area offer the EF Mass?

Background: the reason I am asking is to get a sample of how many EF Masses are offered in the Dioceses of the US. In my Diocese, which covers all of South Carolina there are only three Parishes in the entire state that offer the EF Mass, and only one that has the Mass every Sunday. My closest option in my Diocese is 65 miles away.

It is my understanding that the Holy Father, in Summorum Pontificum asked the Bishops to increase the availability of the EF when requested and I wonder if this is happenning.
Thank you for your help.

the closest to me is about an hour away. but i am hope to get one here in my home town.
the holy father asked the bishops but some bishops still making it very difficult. plus where do we find the priest who can say the Latin Mass? it is not so easy as one thinks.

My parish does not.

There is a parish in my archdiocese that does and it would take me about 15 mins to get there. (its very centrally located in the archdiocese )

Many of the parishes in my archdiocese have much lower attendance than we do (we are a very active parish) and some have to share priests as it is.

Given the shortages of priests we have in our area, the logistics would seem to be a challenge even if it were in high demand. But it is available and in fairly close proximity for most.

Archdiocese of Joliet Illinois has 2 parishes that share a F.S.S.P. chaplain provided by our Bishop J. Peter Sartain. In Joliet the distance is about 10 miles from our home and to Naperville it is about 20 miles. (We are very blessed here.) In Chicago there are many parishes that offer the EF which is about 50 miles from Joliet.

The closest EF for me is North 1 1/2 hours, Southwest 4 hours, West 2 hours and East 2 1/2 hours. There is no EF in my parish or deanery and only one in my diocese. I yearn for something that I could attend regularly. I find myself moving further back into the nave of the church with each NO Mass.

I live on the Oregon coast in the Archdiocese of Portland.
The closest diocesan approved Sunday morning Mass is in Seattle (neighboring diocese), which is about a 400 mile round trip.
There is SOMETIMES an (3:30) afternoon Mass available at St Birgitta’s in Portland, which is about a 200+ mile round trip.
Our Archbishop wrote a column in the diocesan newspaper some time ago, (google Lifting our hearts in liturgical prayer 09/22/2006 Archbishop John Vlazny) which IMO bashed the Traditional Mass.

SSPX has two Sunday morning Masses in the Garden Home area of what I believe is South Portland, which is still a 200 or so mile round trip.

How many Parishes in your area offer the EF Mass? Three Diocesan and one SSPX. There is one other but it appears to be sedevacanist in nature.

**Here is a listing of EF masses **in the US by state.

Expansion of the EF is slow. Primarily because there is not enough people requesting it. Make you desires known to your pastor, and to your Bishop. Encourage others to do so.

Yes, thankfully!
If not how far do you have to go to find an EF Mass?
**Before it was an hour drive, round. **
How many Parishes in your area offer the EF Mass?
**In a diocese of 94 parishes, 4 total, only 2 of those on a regular weekly basis. **

The next closest to me if (Heaven forbid!) my parish stopped celebrating it, would be over three hours away, round. I think I’d do it, but for me who am not comfy driving too much, it’s quite the trek on a day that should be restful. I pray daily for an increase of the EF, but to be honest, it seems like the majority of people don’t even know about the motu proprio. I’m writing a letter to the diocese paper on the Mass held at CUA, so hopefully others will be inspired – well, I mean, if they print it!

amsjj 🙂

Very true. Funny thing is that Summorum Pontificum took that power (or should I say “sword of Damocles”) away from them, yet they still brandish it. 🤷

It’s not “easy” in the same sense that that the Novus Ordo is, but OTOH it’s not exactly rocket science either: if someone has (a) the will, and (b) a basic foundation in Latin and (c) can read, he can learn it. I know at least 2 priests who taught themselves. There are also plenty of books and videos available, as well as classes offered by the Norbertines and Canons Regular of S John Cantius and probably others as well.

what i am saying is that not many priests are willing to learn the Latin Mass. some have some kind of aversion to it. fear from. the bishops, the controllers of it all are making very difficult for the Latin Mass priests. in my area some have tried but ended up having to give it up due to the liberal bullies.

today, i went to the Latin Mass. it is one hour away, the priest was telling that they are still ilegal but hopefully soon he could baptized, do first communion, and so forth. our bishop allowed this Mass because of the pressure of the people, but he limited them to only certain rights which is not much. this Latin Mass is very limited and controlled by this bishop who hates the Latin Mass and that is because of sinfull life style.

I know. What I meant was the business of “we don’t have trained priests” that is so often spouted by the obstructionist bishops is a lot of hot air. Those priests who want to learn the EF can do so with a minimum of difficulty.

yes. i talked to the priest from FSSP and he told me that even though the pope said they are free to say the LM, the priest still have to ask for permission from the bishop. which this bishop already have determined no LM allowed under him.

In my area, the nearest parish doing a weekly EF is three hours away, each way. I worked to establish a regular TLM in my parish and we literally had hundreds attend the few we have had. But with infrequent scheduling and a no priest to have one regularly (though God bless the priest who has been willing to offer it on the few occasions), we are really struggling.

Does your Parish offer the EF? No :nope:
If not how far do you have to go to find an EF Mass? Between 75 minutes and 90 minutes.
How many Parishes in your area offer the EF Mass? In my diocese, one regularly, one occasionaly. So ONE!! 😦

In America?!? WE don’t listen to the Pope here :tsktsk:

:banghead:

Unfortunetly, no parish in my diocese offers a TLM. One parish offered it ONCE but one of the priests left and my Bishop sent a non-Traditional priest there who refuses to offer the TLM even when asked. I think my Bishop sent him there to disrupt the process after the original priest left. My Bishop now refuses to allow one period because he says it puts too much stress on the staff members and that he thought spanish masses were more important. So basically an excuse.

The nearest TLM for me is about an hour and a half away. So it’s a pretty long drive. I’m not in a good situation in my diocese. 😦

The Diocese of Boise has a regular EF Mass in Post Falls (where they have an FSSP pastor) and one on a less frequent basis in Idaho Falls. Both of these are about 300 miles away from Boise. The nearest EF Mass to Boise is just under 60 miles away in Nyssa, Oregon, in the Diocese of Baker, where they have an FSSP priest. He offers the EF Mass on the second Saturday evening of each month, and I believe also on some weekdays.

Other than that, there is the SSPX chapel in New Plymouth, which is slightly closer.

It’s very difficult to get the EF Mass in the Diocese of Boise.

My parish does offer the EF every Sunday at noon. I have yet to go :o though I intend to at some point in the future. I am in the Arlington, VA archdiocese in Gainesville.

holytrinityparish.net/

Also, I was attending a parish in Sterling, VA, also in the Arlington archdiocese before we moved to Gainesville and the parochial vicar there is learning it so the parish can offer one of their masses in EF.

I moved to VA from the midwest and the Arlington Archdiocese seems a lot more traditional/formal throughout. For instance, I see no female altar severs ever, the priests wear more traditional garments (my priest in Sterling, VA always wore a cassock) the altar servers are in more traditional garments as well. I never see flip flops or sandals or jeans under altar server garments - the kids are always very well dressed. The use of EEM’s seems much lower as well and there are just simply more priests, deacons and seminarians present in the parish(es). There is a lot of emphasis on penance and confession in the homilies as well. 😛

Also, during the NO mass, the Hail Mary is usually said at the end of the community prayers, and after the mass has ended the entire congregation stands and says the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel together. To be honest the first few times I attended mass here I was a little confused!

My local parish does not currently offer the EF.

Within one hour of my residence:

DIOC 25mi SUN & TUE
DIOC 25mi SAT & SUN
SSPX 35mi SUN
INDE 35mi DAILY
SSPX 55mi DAILY
DIOC 55mi SUN
SSPX 60mi SUN
