Guess you would have to define “bad”Somewhat in defense of Mr. Monaghan, he was instrumental in financing of my son’s Catholic elementary and high schools. Without his support neither of the schools could have expanded the way they have in the past few years.
I perceive Mr. Monaghan as being rather impetuous, backing this venture and then withdrawing to back another. He’s not a bad guy, but he sure isn’t popular right now.

I don’t think the number of jobs at Ave Maria are gong to impact the economy all that much.Great, just what Ann Arbor and SE Michigan needs after losing Pfizer.![]()
Change impacts people in different ways and is often unpleasant. But if it is to move, Naples is a beautiful place.I was considering attending there and called them a couple of years ago. I asked point blank, “So, will the law school relocate to Naples along with the university?” The reply: “Oh, no, it’s DEFINITELY staying in Ann Arbor.”
This was important to me because my husband works for the State of Michigan, so I can’t relocate to Florida.
Glad I didn’t enroll. I know several people who won’t be too happy.

I don’t think Ann Arbor will be shedding too many tears over Ave Maria departing. They were never too happy with the entire concept of training lawyers to be pro-life.Great, just what Ann Arbor and SE Michigan needs after losing Pfizer.![]()
If you were one of the 360 students who packed up and moved to Ann Arbor only to now have to relocate to Florida or get admitted to another law school, you might see what some of the fuss is about. I know that his law school was not that high in the national rankings anyway, so it will make it more difficult for students to transfer. If they had to move an entire family to Ann Arbor and the spouse is working and the kids are in school. . .not a good situation. If feel sorry for the students who have been forking over private school tuition only to have this happen.I’m not quite sure what the fuss is all about. If it weren’t for Monaghan there would be no Ave Maria series of institutions. If people don’t like what he is doing go start your own college or raise enough money to keep it whereever you wish. If I had the choice of living in Ann Arbor, Michigan or Naples, Florida I wouldn’t hesitate. How quickly can I pack my bags, would be the only consideration.
I hope he makes millions on his real estate venture.

Law is supposed to be reason free from emotion…I never really understood what it meant to train a ‘Catholic lawyer’.I don’t think Ann Arbor will be shedding too many tears over Ave Maria departing. They were never too happy with the entire concept of training lawyers to be pro-life.
I suppose to be a Catholic Lawyer is to recognize what reason really means. It isn’t simply calculation. It is wisdom as well as logic. It is a recognition that calculation without wisdom is nothing more than an examination ones own brain and not an examination of reality.Law is supposed to be reason free from emotion…I never really understood what it meant to train a ‘Catholic lawyer’.
If you are refering to “natural law”, then you are correct.I suppose to be a Catholic Lawyer is to recognize what reason really means. It isn’t simply calculation. It is wisdom as well as logic. It is a recognition that calculation without wisdom is nothing more than an examination ones own brain and not an examination of reality.

Hello,Law is supposed to be reason free from emotion…I never really understood what it meant to train a ‘Catholic lawyer’.
I agree with that statement…but even a Catholic Lawyer would need to understand the legal reasoning behind those cases.Hello,
I think that this is referring to the type of law in which one would practice? Would a Catholic handle divorces, for example? Or get involved with the ACLU to remove the 10 Commandments from our courthouses? Among many other examples. The law is certainly the law. As an attorney, one may choose which type of law to practice.
It appears that Monaghan is in way over his head. I also have much to learn.
