Ave Maria University granted official 'Catholic' status

Ave Maria University has been officially recognized as a Catholic university by Bishop Frank Dewan of Venice, Florida.

Established in 2003 by Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino’s Pizza, Ave Maria has emphasized its strong commitment to the Catholic faith from its earliest days. But Bishop Dewane—who has sat on the university’s board since 2009—had been cautious about granting the school official recognition, apparently because of concerns about the university’s administrative leadership.

Jim Towey, the new president of Ave Maria, expressed his gratitude to Bishop Dewane for “his confidence in our future.”

Great to hear! Two of my children attended its law school when it was in Michigan, and I’m sure they will be glad to hear about it.

That’s great to hear!! These days it seems so many schools that start up “in the Catholic tradition” are more orthodox than official Catholic schools.

Great news. I was fortunate to have met Mr. Monaghan in May for the beatification of Blessed Pope John Paul. He is a humble man, and was hoping the University would soon receive the status as “Catholic”.
