Awkward moments during mass

A couple of Sundays ago, we had a visiting Franciscan friar who gave the homily and also was asking for help in his missions in South American. During the homily there was this huge crash of lightning outside, the lights dimmed and flickered, then our pipe organ (this is in a Cathedral) suddenly went haywire. Every single key on the organ played at once. It was like the voice of God speaking - really amazing hearing that from a real pipe organ.
Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but that would have me not only emptying my wallet, but reaching for the credit cards as well! :clapping:

August 21, 2007

I heard from friends that one Sunday they were at Mass and a woman had a psychotic episode at Mass, and she started screaming obscenities at everyone present. She had to be physically removed from the church by the medics and taken to the hospital.

One time a bird flew into the Church during Sunday Mass. Then, it circled around the front of the church and then flew back out.

Once I witnessed a dog running up the main aisle, and the ushers were rushing to get ahold of it to take it outside of the church.

One religious nun shared with her novices in formation that a priest who was called upon to say Mass went to put on his vestment but forgot to take it off the hanger. The hanger was hanging from the back of his vestment, and this nun (in her early years as a Sister) was called upon to quietly go up behind the priest and remove the hanger.

not about a Catholic MASS or anything, but…

my mom once decided, out of the blue, to take my little brother sisters to a Salvation Army church that she liked… she is one of those people who believes that one doesn’t need to go to church to be saved 😦 and is a very liberal, baptist-leaning protestant.

this is why she doesn’t go to church very often at all, and as a result, neither do my younger siblings… 😦 (about which I am praying constantly… and any more prayers are appreciated… I am the only Catholic in my family (and I’m a Neophyte), most are atheist or non-practising protestants though there is a small handful of practising Lutherans and one Presbyterian as well… so there is lots of room for prayers for the conversion(s) of loved ones)

anyways. they ended up stopping at a Tim Hortons on the way to the church, and my then-four (now five) year old little sister asked, very loudly for the whole coffee shop to hear, “is this church, mommie?” :o 😃

sorry but I just thought of an amusing anecdote (sp?)…

just before Easter our priest picked up one of the babies during his homily… and when he went to give the baby girl back to her mother, the baby started crying!

so he continued to hold her and she was happy as long as he was holding her but if he tried to give her back to her mother, she cried!

finally, though, he had to give the baby back to her mother anyways because he ran across a part of the MASS that he couldn’t do one-handed…

needless to say, it was terribly cute… as well as just a little distracting… 🙂 😃

Just wanted to say “thank you” for the “vote of awkwardness” on my angel saga. Your enjoyment is a many-years-later balance to a painfully still remembered moment; makes it worth sharing. I forgot to mention that the lady I was sitting next to was wearing a turquoise taffetta dress with a mink draped over her shoulders that had one of those little heads on it with the eyes! I had never seen a stole like that before and the mink was at my eye level and I stared at it on and off through Mass. When her taffetta dress got soaked, she of course was the first to jump up, and glared furiously at me. I gave her a weak smile, with my best attempt at “What a shame. I didn’t do it!” but those minky little eyes just further condemned me!

I’ve seen those little minks in antique stores. They are strange looking. I think I would have been bothered by it when I was a kid. :hypno:

The very first Mass I ever went to when I was 19 years old was at St. Cyril’s in Tucson, AZ. My roommate invited me to go. I had never been in a Church before (raised a JW, we had “halls”). It was awesome, I was hooked from the get go. At the end when the priest was giving the blessing I blessed him the same way he was blessing us, and with even more exuberant and grandiose gestures than his. My roommate was really trying hard to suppress the giggles.

This past Easter Vigil, the wax-paper cup around my neighbor’s candle caught fire. The flame was getting quite close to his sweater. I tried to gesture and poke him, but he was so deep in worship, I couldn’t get his attention. Finally his wife (on the other side of him) saw, calmly grabbed the candle, which was pretty much a torch, left by the side entrance, and threw it on the still-smoldering Easter fire. Whew!

I just love the post about the little child who thought the Knights of Columbus were pirates and yelled this out at Mass.

At Confirmation, one of the Altar servers couldn’t find the holder for the Bishops crook (what is that called), so he leaned it against the wall. BTW- it was beautiful with a carving of Our Lady and the Child Jesus. Well, just as the Bishop started the Homily, the crook fell over and snapped in half.

And the teen choir I sang with scared the Bishop when we started our death metal version of “Jesus Loves Me” (same Confirmation as when his crook got broken)
 Did he exorcise the place as he left? :rotfl:

I’ll provide you with a little more balance and add my vote to the pile naming you as the “Awkward Mass Moment” champion. 😃

Didn’t happen at our parish, but a good friend’s several weeks ago who told me about it …

Their priest is very elderly, and fell asleep in the early morning Mass during the readings. Unfortunately, his mike was on. Everyone heard his very loud snoring. :o Several polite nudges by the Deacon didn’t work, he had to shake him by the shoulders to wake up.

Did anybody in the congregation fall asleep during Father’s homily?

Don’t know. But my friend did tell me everyone was trying not to laugh out loud, holding back as best they could. Its a very small parish, less than 50 at this Mass. Said the reader even had to pause because the snoring was so loud!

When I was a kid, my parents tended to pick out the same pew each Sunday, and apparetnly, several other people did the same. There usually was a woman with one of those stoles sitting right in front of me. The furs still had the heads, tails, and feet on, and the mouth of each animal was biting the tail of the next one in line. I could never take my eyes off it. Talk about distracting clothing! 😃

One Sunday last summer our former deacon, who tends to be rather long winded and who has a very soothing and quiet voice, gave the homily. After about 15 minutes he sat down and we all waited for the priest to stand up and begin the Creed. After a few minutes it became obvious that the priest was asleep- not dozing, but deeply, soundly asleep. It took several nudges from the deacon to wake him up. :o

I inherited one of those mink-things from a great-aunt. It gave me the heebie-jeebies. I gave it to the costume dept. at the community theater, and they were delighted to have it.

Apparently, those things were in style years ago. I’m sure the theatre will make great use of it for “period” plays.

My wife e-mailed me that at Mass this wkend my 3 yr old kept asking her which one (priest or deacon) was God. He kept repeating himself getting louder and louder. I guess I have my work cut out for me when I get back home.
a prayer for you and yours for a call home soon:)
