Awkward moments during mass

We had a small child run up onto the altar, grab a hold of Father and refuse to let go.
His mortified mother sat in the front pew waiting until he was done. Yep, he stayed up there the entire Mass.‘chere bebe’

Easter Sunday, my drama teacher woke to a pair of Wonder Woman underoos, which she wore under her Easter Dress. When she went with her mother up to communion, she pulled the front of her dress up and said “FATHER! Look what I got!”
i had to read about your drama teacher a few times before it dawned on me that she was a KID when that happened!! HeeHee!!!😃 😛 😃 Havin’ a REALLY BLOND mornin’!!!

That’s ok, I had to read through it a couple of times too! 😃

I had my cell phone go off one time while I was readingthe epistle. I turned it off and embarrassingly finished reading. When we got to the sermon our Pastor looked at me and said “I hope that was God calling you”

I haven’t been confirmed yet. I was going to the local Newman Center. At a retreat I went to with some other college students Father had told the two of us who were not yet confirmed to feel free to get in line during Communion to get a blessing during Mass and told us how to cross our arms.

A month later I went to Mass there, and decided to get in line. I walked up, with my arms crossed. Father hadn’t looked up and handed me the host saying “The Body of Christ.” I got very embarrassed and flustered, and motioned to my arms with my eyes. He apologized and looked just as mortified and gave me a quick blessing. Definitely am staying in my seat from now on! How awful it felt to be offered the Body of Christ and having to say “no”
I had that saddening experience a few times before I entered the Church.

Let’s see, once Father was giving a homily on the Light of Christ and the darkness of this world… At one point during his homily, right as he said the word ‘darkness’, the electricity went out and the church went dark besides the flickering candles. It was only out for a few seconds and the best part- right as Father lifted his eyes to look at the congregation, the lights came back on, as if on que. It was amusing.

Awkward… I was at daily Mass where we had a lot of young kids (it was VBS week). Now, I always receive Holy Communion on the tongue and usually, for whatever reason, my eyes are closed when I receive. Well, I went up to receive, tongue out and eyes closed, and nothing happened. I opened my eyes and Father was looking at the Communion line next to ours, where a kid who was too young to receive had just been given a Host. Well, Father was also in the midst of giving me Communion and in his distraction, he dropped the Host. Somehow, (must have been my softball skills) I reacted and caught the Host. I felt bad, Father was embarrassed and was apologizing.

My coworker’s grandson started kindergarten at the parish across the street from the library.

One day she asked him what he had learned, and he said “We learned how to salute the Crucifix!”
😃

This is a great thread and I thank you all for lots of great chuckles! Here are a few awkward moments I’ve had in church:
  1. A little Scottish terrier was running down the aisle just before mass and I made him stop. I picked him up and he was squirming…strong little dog. I didn’t know what to do. Then the monsignor came up and said, “Is that your dog?” I said no and he took the dog and ran him down the aisle holding his collar. I softly called out, “He has tags”. Afterwards I learned that the monsignor has always had dogs of his own.
  2. A very sick woman was brought to mass by an attendant. She was in such bad shape she shouldn’t have been there. She was in a medical wheelchair with something that looked like a monitor. During the priest’s homily, the contraption started beeping. It reminded me of the beeps that happen before a “flatline” signal. She was wheeled out apologetically and Father waived and said, “Take care”. I don’t know why that struck me funny but it did.

Oh yeah, dogs 😃
Our priest owns such a, sorry, but really, ratty little breed that barks all the time and bites if it gets the chance.
As he lives right next to he church and the doors are left open on hot summer days, the dog comes frequently running in during mass or vesper and won’t leave until he scoops it up and locks it up - everyone else is to afraid to pay bloody tribute!

A Trappist Monastery in Ireland
It was the Easter Vigil at about 11 pm. The monks are in the front and the large church behind them was packed. One elderly monk fainted. They brought in a wheel chair got him in it and wheeled him out. (Fortunately he was ok the next day.) But after the Mass was over people were talking about how they had never seen that change in the Holy Week liturgy before.

One time, I was attending seminarian graduation with our Bishop as the main celebrant. During his homily, he was thanking the parents, but he said “I want to thank the parents for the faith they instilled in these fine young men and women…” or something along those lines. Everybody cracked up. After he realized what he said, he said something along the lines of “the Holy Father will probably have something to say about this.” I love our Bishop. It goes to show that priests are humble servants.

I had an awkward moment last week. I decided not to receive communion because, well, the because isn’t important. Everyone goes up for a blessing though, so out I went with everyone. The EMHC was intent on giving me the Eucharist. I had my hands in the ‘blessing’ position, just like my children. I shook my head no when he tried to give it to me and mouthed, “No, not today” Then he tried to shove it in my mouth!

So, as nice as I think everyone going forward is, either for communion or blessing, I think I will opt out if I do not feel like I should be receiving.
It’s not exactly easy when EMHCs cannot really give a blessing to begin with. If you aren’t in the state of grace to recieve communion but still would like to recieve a blessing, go in the priests line.

As an altar boy growing up, I was actually pretty good. I’m a quick learner and very anal about details. And I was also very, very comfortable standing in front of our congregation.

Well, one time I had to serve for a funeral mass. The deceased was a police officer…I think he died in the line of duty.

A monsignor presided over the mass, and was concelebrated with our pastor.

The church was packed solid with police officers and their family. Probably 300 people, much larger than our regular Sunday congregation.

“Not let us offer each other a sign of peace.”

No problem; I shook the hand of the other acolyte and approached the priest and monsignor to shake their hands. I had to wait for them to finish, but in the meantime I got my first full look at the congregation, that ocean of navy blue, badges and decorations.

I just stared.

All of a sudden the priest taps me on the shoulder, I look, the monsignor has his hand out, and the priest says, “shake the Monsignor’s hand.”

He must have been standing there waiting for me. I shook his hand, turned back around and noticed the entire congregation looking at me. 😊

My pastor and associate do not give blessings in the communion line. Everybody at Mass receives a blessing at the end of the Mass. For those who are not receiving, it is best to make a spiritual communion.

Although it is not the priest’s blessing, anyone can ask God to bless, and since the blessing is not really a part of the distribution of communion, it is perfectly acceptable for an EMHC the ask God to bless the person.

Unless you know that it is a parish custom to go forward for a blessing, even if you are not receiving, it may be confusing.

at a nondenom church we used to attend, we had a band - guitar, keyboard, drums, etc. all three of my boys have autism and my oldest LOVES music (fyi - psychologists believe mozart had autism). anyways, brandon loves music, he’ll even dance to a jingle in a tv commercial. and during worship, he ALWAYS got out in the aisle and danced and sang. visitors would always point to him and smile. everyone in our church knew he has autism and everyone was very supportive. quite a few times during worship he would run up front and “join the band” and sing and dance with them as well. but, one day during the sermon, brandon got away from us and ran straight to the worship leader’s guitar which was sitting on a stand, and began to strum it. it was an electric guitar, and they didn’t turn it off, so everyone heard it and laughed. the pastor was cool about it and said “paul (the worship leader), looks like you might be out of a job”.

When I was about 13 or so my father and I attended Sunday evening Mass. This Church had no air conditioning and it was a VERY hot summer day. I was standing and started feeling dizzy, sat down and passed out. Next thing I knew, I came to and my father and some other man was standing over me asking if I was ok. I was mortified! Thank goodness they have air conditioning now 🙂

Sure, rub it in! We don’t have A/C at our parish. Lucky you.
When I was a teenager (about 13 or 14), I fainted in my aunt and uncle’s church. No AC, which my church had. Of course, I was not allowed to wear shorts to church. I still do not. The only time I did was when I went to Mass on the Disney grounds back in the early 1990’s (when they still had Mass on their property), Otherwise, I have always put up with whatever the weather happens to be. Luckily, my parish has AC. 😃
