Awkward moments during mass

We don’t NEED air conditioning - try out a building that’s abut a 1.000 years old and out of solid stone - but I fainted for another reason once, I tripped on my clothes, fell over the stairs that lead to the altar and hit my head. Whole parish watching. Ouch.

I was not at that Mass, but friends of mine from church said that an altar boy tripped on his alb, hit his head on the altar and passed out. Thankfully, he was all right.

I’ve had a couple of awkward, embarrassing moments happen to me, and both were caused by my kids.

When my older daughter was just a baby, I carried her as I went up to receive Communion. Right when we got to the front of the line, right in front of Father, she decided she was hungry and pulled the front of my shirt down practically to my navel. I had to struggle with getting her to let go, yank my shirt back up, and receive the Eucharist. Thank goodness I always wear a bra!

When my younger daughter was about three, we came into church like we always did for Mass, but she stopped and screamed as loud as she could, “No! I thought we were going to Disneyland!” Where she got that idea, I’ll never know.

Haha… That’s cute…😃

The priest only had the spanish mass book in front of him and didn’t have the mass parts memorized so he asked us if we knew the priest parts lol. Otherwise he said he would have to read like it said in spanish. He has been a priest for 25 years too so I don’t know how he didn’t know them. We all did.

I am told (I don’t remeber it myself) that when I was a little girl I mortified my mom by 😉 escaping her clutches during the sermon. I ran up and stood next to the Dean of the Cathedral (I was Episcopalian then), held onto his cassock and just stood there. I guess mom had to go up and remove me.

I am also told that I threw up on the priest when I was baptized (Episcopalians also baptize infants).

Our Lord has been gracious; I can’t think of anything since I became Catholic:thumbsup:

A visiting priest was making some personal commentary during a Mass at my parish. After an admittedly dull offertory song, he said “What a rather melancholy song. It would’ve been better for the evening Mass”. He also went into the congregation during the Sign of Peace and even played around with some guy’s baseball cap. Before Communion, he tried to get the kneeling pianist to get up and with annoyance said, “C’mon now, every good meal needs background music”. He got a lot of confused stares from parishoners.

I just thought of something else that was kinda awkward. A few Sundays ago, a Jesuit missionary said Mass and in his homily I think he said something like he didn’t agree with the priests who preach about sin and hell and how everyone isn’t that bad. For the very next Mass, a conservative priest said exactly the opposite and the Jesuit (who was being introduced) chuckled a bit. Same Gospel reading, opposite interpretations, hah.

This one happened to my grandmother when her older brother (who btw celebrated his 60th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood a couple of years ago) was getting confirmed. The whole family, including the youngest who would have been about 3 or 4 was in attendance and had been involved in all the sacramental prep. Part way through the mass, an altar server slipped while holding a candle and lit the bishop’s vestments on fire. As everybody on the altar scrambled to put the fire out my little uncle Michael called out from the congregation: “Tongues of flame! Tongues of flame!”

Well, I’ve none of my own (yet), but I have to out my FI on a few. His parents relayed them to me the first time we ever at dinner together, so I’m pretty sure they’re fair game:

When my FI was young, his parents sat in the front row every Sunday. A new priest was being introduced to the parish, a priest that FI’s family has come to know very well, Fr. Ernie. After the short introduction, and as Mass began, my then toddler FI stood up in his pew and yelled “Hey Ernie! Where’s Bert?!”

Another instance around the same time …

Whatever FI had done at Mass was entirely unacceptable and his dad was escorting him out to the narthex under one arm while my future FI was screaming “I HATE MY DADDY!”

FI still has quite a presence, but thankfully he’s stopped yelling things in Church 😛

The priest was giving a homily one day and he said, “I give thanks to God for my wife.” What he meant was, “I give thanks to God for my life.” At least that is what we hope he meant!!

One palm sunday, while the priest was walking along the isle to immitate the triumpant entry, people were waving their palm branches. Because almost all people wanted to be near the isle, there was little space for the priest to march that while he was walking, a lot of palm brances hit his head hard. He was very angry when he arrived at the altar, and even scratced his head because of the itcheness he sustained.

A few years ago at a night mass during the blessing of the bread and wine, I fainted and my head hit the seat (it was wooden) and made a loud sound. Those sitting in the next few rows front and back heard it and turned to look. Those who were sitting next to me swarmed over me to make sure I was ok.

At my first Catholic Christmas Midnight Mass, the incense set off the new, modern fire alarm system. After some alarm tones, a nice female voice was saying, “The fire department has been called. Please evacuate the building…”

Father “interrupted” her, saying, “We’ll just wait until the nice lady is through talking…” We all had a good laugh. He also quietly delegated someone to turn off the alarm and call the fire department to tell them not to come.

At Mass one day, Father was trying to light the incense, and dropped the match. The carpet started to smolder, and Father and the altar boys had to stamp out the “fire”. Oops! :o

At the Easter Vigil Mass, there was a basket of chocolate eggs on the organ console (for us to take home with us after Mass was over), and one of the choir members reached into the basket for a few eggs, and dropped one out of the choir loft – it bounced off the lower balcony, and fell to the ground level, four stories below. Bombs away! I hope it didn’t hit anyone on the head! We had a hard time trying not to laugh out loud. 😃

We had an incense thing too…the bottom burned out of the censor and the hot coals fell in the carpeted sanctuary. The priest scooped them up by hand and said “Skin grows back; carpet doesn’t!”

**I was reading at a daily Mass, when my phone in my purse (back in my pew) went off. **

**My ring tone for dd was her voice yelling, "Hey Mom! it’s Me, Katy! PICK UP YOUR PHONE! :o The Sister who always sat behind me hung it up for me 😃 but during the Psalm, it was DH’s voice saying, “hi, honey, it’s me, please pick up your phone.” :o :o **

When i finished reading, I grabbed my purse and left to check my messages – dd had forgotten her lunch box 🤷 . From then on, I’ve never forgotten to turn off the phone and have changed my ring tones to nice quiet, classical tones.

When my son was about 2 (he is now 17), we were kneeling during the consecration. He was also “kneeling”. My mother and I were so involved with what was going on in the Mass we weren’t really paying attention to my son who decided to remove the shoes of the lady kneeling in the pew in front of us. She was very kind about it, even when he didn’t want to return the shoe he taken.

I’m in process of converting, but was an Episcopalian. As such, I was very excited when business took me to San Francisco on a Sunday and I had a chance to attend mass at a very famous, Anglican, cathedral. It being San Fran, I was only mildly flustered by the large, hairy man, in a sun dress, seated next to me. What did cause me great embarrassment came when we all went up to the rail to kneel and receive communion.

This was BIG church, with pews facing the front at a variety of angles, and a maze of “side passages”. Being on the aisle, I led the line of communicants to the front and then we were expected to perform almost a choreography to return to our seats. So awestruck was I by everything, I forgot which row I was in and then managed to lead us down a dead end, side passage. After several minutes, the hairy man in the sun dress swept pass me with a mighty sigh and led us back to the promised land.

At Easter Vigil, when the altar boy was lighting candles, he inadvertently used the wrong end of the candle-lighter and was earnestly trying to snuff out the Easter candle! The deacon and one or two others leaped forward to stop him before he could. A comic moment at a very solemn time. 🙂

I sang in our choir for many years, then for a while was unable to go to practice because of work. I knew most of the music anyway, so wasnt worried. Then at the Easter vigil mass, in the dark solemn moment when the priest, coming down the aisle, intoned “Christ our Light”, the rest of the choir responded “Come let us worship”, but I sang my loudest and best “Thanks be to God”.! oi yoi yoi - This thread is priceless.:rotfl:
