A Catholic priest in British Columbia is returning his Order of Canada after Dr. Henry Morgentaler was named a member, calling the controversial abortion doctor’s induction into the Order “a terrible mistake.”
Father Lucien Larre, who was inducted into the nation’s highest order in 1983 for his work with troubled youth, said in a news release yesterday that he felt “compelled in conscience to return my Order of Canada.”

Beautiful!
Well, yes, but if the norms that are in play today had been in play before 1996 this priest would have been stripped of his Order of Canada when he was convicted of child abuse. Whether he should have been convicted of child abuse is another matter.

Shame! When anyone posts child abuse, immediate reaction is sexual abuse. If you have another link, please post it.
In 1992, a Saskatchewan jury convicted him on two counts of physically abusing children in his care at Bosco Homes and acquitted him on nine other charges. Larre was sentenced to one day in jail and paid a $2,500 fine for one charge of common assault and one charge that he forced pills down the throat of a teenager to teach her a lesson about drug abuse.
The National Parole Board of Canada pardoned him five years later and erased the charges.
This priest works with troubled teens and was convicted of 2 accounts of physical abuse which landed him in jail for 1 day and the charges were later stripped from his record.

His record had already been spoken of on these boards and if I’d meant sexual abuse I would have said sexual abuse.

My point is that if the rules that are in play today had been in play at the time, he would not have had a medal to return, later pardon notwithstanding. That’s why those who are on Morgentaler’s side are having a field day with his gesture.

I admire him for acting on his principles and can only hope more who think like him do the same. I doubt that that will happen though.

Would you kindly post the thread as I can’t find any prior posts on this priest.

Thanks, I never saw these posts.

childofmary1143 posted a link to original story - B.C priest gives back order - on July 3 and only response was what you responded…
Unfortunately, due to his history, that one does not have the desired effect and people are having a field day with it.

Shoshana posted a link to - B. C gives back Order - on July 3rd on post 11 of 13 posts. Simply a link to original article and with no discussion on Fr. Larre.

There was no discussion of any abuse so to say that Father Larre behavior had been discussed many times before on these forums was simply not the full truth. If you mention a priest, then throw out child abuse, people think sexual abuse.

It was not sexual abuse. This is a wonderful gesture on the good priest/doctor’s part. Interestingly, Fr. Larre was my younger brother’s psychologist. He is a wonderful priest, clinician, and man.

As I am not a Canadian, i dont quite know the rules, but can an Order of Canada be rovoked, and if so how?

Yes, per The Constitution for the Order of Canada
  1. The Advisory Council shall consider the termination of a person’s appointment to the Order of Canada if
(a) the person has been convicted of a criminal offence; or
(b) the conduct of the person
Code:
(i) constitutes a significant departure from generally-recognized standards of public behaviour which is seen to undermine the credibility, integrity or relevance of the Order, or detracts from the original grounds upon which the appointment was based; or
Code:
(ii) has been subject to official sanction, such as a fine or a reprimand, by an adjudicating body, professional association or other organization.

His return is not a mere ‘gesture’, of that I am certain.
May this priest forever be poor before men, but rich before God.

I hope the abortion debate returns front and center in Canada due to this foolish and ludicrous nomination of Mortgentaler.

Wouldn’t this fit dr. Mortgentaler?

Could you really argue for revocation based on his 1976 sanction by the Disciplinary Committee of the Professional Corporation of Physicians of Quebec when you already awarded it IN SPITE of that sanction? I could see if it was something that had come to light after the announcement, but everyone knows full well Morgentaler’s history.
