I know a friend of mine who claims he is Catholic, but he is active in a different sect of it called the “banal na paagaral” or BNP. I did my research a little and all I know is that some lady named Ate Salve is the founder and she believes she is holy? Anyone know of this sect (or cult) ? Can anyone explain to me what they believe because they claim to be Catholic, but I hear it isn’t recognized by the Vatican and that the Archdiocese of Detroit has place a band on their activities on Catholic property.

Hello:

Well, there’s your answer: the Vatican and the Archdiocese of Detroit don’t recognize them, so who needs them? They are preaching some other doctrine.

Sounds like some Filipino group. Just the other day I tuned into very early TV here in Detroit and found some guy that sounded like a Protestant but who was dressed in a chasuble and kept moving from English into Tagalog and back. Maybe he belonged to this cult. I didn’t get his name, though the broadcast originated from Baguio City in the Philippines, but I’ll tune in again. I wondered then if he was with that “Iglesia ni Cristo”.

Joannes

At least a decade ago the Filipino Ministry at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles issued a statement regarding this group and if memory serves me correctly disassociated themselves entirely from this them.

There are a lot of these syncretistic, pseudo-Christian cults in the Philippines, many of them led by self-professed holy women who claim to be either sent by God or are incarnations of God Himself as “Diyos na Ina” (God the Mother). Usually, these groups are quite small, and most of their recruits are poor and semi-literate folks from the countryside, who are attracted by the alleged “supernatural” powers and healing abilities of these leaders, and the promise of a better life under their wing.

However, there are too many of them to describe and list down here.

Gerry 🙂

I was in Detroit helping set up a Catholic singles ministry (which is Vatican approved) and I kept hearing BNP did this and BNP did that… BNP members are not allowed to do this or that. The can’t talk to people of other ministries.

AGGGG.

We were blessed the priest knows and approves of the CFC-Singles for Christ.

We know it’s not going to be easy, please pray for us.

The Banal Na Pag-aaral ( BNP ) movement is a lay ministry.
Its primary purpose is draw people back to the Catholic Church,
We conduct retreat classes and other activities to achieve this end.

It is true that certain dioceses have not accepted the BNP and its
membership. But , this is a long way from being banned . All this means is that as an organization we cannot fully participate in the dioceses’ activities. In other dioceses like San Bernardino , their priests are forbidden from administering the Holy Sacraments to the BNP membership,

These prohibitions came as a result of an advisory letter from the
late cardinal Sin , which was later rescinded . The BNP now enjoys full participation in most dioceses in the Philippines.
We hope in the fullness of time , that the restrictions we have in
America will be lifted , God willing.

Please do not judge or lump us in with any sect, cult or organization until you have actually witnessed or experienced
what the BNP truly is.

They have been banned by the Diocese of San Bernardino CA and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, CA. Here is a link to the letter from the Bishop of San Bernardino.

Hope this helps,
Paul

I had never heard about this movement before until today.
In the letter, it says that the movement promoted activities and teachings that are not in conformity with the teaching of the Church.

Do you know what activities and teachings the bishop was referring to in this letter?

Thanks!

Off topic, but I thought you were talking about the British National Party, a closet nazi cowardly political party fighting for white rights and all that bull.

I think that is called interdict which is one step short of excommunication. It is a lot more serious than just not being accepted or not fully participating in diocesan activities.

Thank you for the link to the diocese of San Bernardino.
I knew about that already . In fact have one of the copies from approximately ten years ago in my files .

The point I was trying to get across is that the reaction to the BNP has been mixed . As in the Philippines and in America, the
reaction has been mixed . We are welcomed in some and rejected in others . We never force anyone to attend our
functions ,we just ask. As to excommunication , that has to have the blessing of the Pope and as far as I know , the BNP is
nowhere near that.

But that aside , all I hope is that eventually these misunderstandings and miscommunications can be addressed.
God works in very mysterious ways… and I myself can
attest to that.

Until then , please consider me still your brother in Christ.
and may God bless you and yours with good health .

. …
If you note the actions of Bishop Bruskewitz in Nebraska, bishops have the power to excommunicate those within his diocese. This was confirmed by the Vatican.

I know about Bishop Bruskewitz did and his threat of
excommunication (ipso-facto latae sententiae ) on the membership of some groups in his diocese. But, you have to agree that these were groups that advocated abortion, assisted suicide , FreeMasonry and a breakaway from the tenets that were set in Vatican II . The BNP does NOT practice ,advocate or
support any of these ideas or groups.

As for the blessing of the Pope. Any Catholic that is affected by a writ of excommunication has the right to appeal first to the bishop , then to the Holy See and the Pope , or have they rewritten the 1983 Code of canon law?

As far as I know , there has been no excommunication proceedings or even threats of excommunication proceedings against the BNP in America and the Philippines and in the other countries that the BNP has Chapters or a presence.

may God bless you and yours.

I think that is called interdict which is one step short of excommunication. It is a lot more serious than just not being accepted or not fully participating in diocesan activities.
Please be sure of your terms , an interdict is just what you
defined , it is a ban on a group or person’s participation in the
diocese, especially with regards to the Sacraments. Anyone affected by an interdict ( local ,general or personal ) can still attend Mass ( unless prohibited specifically ) .
An interdict stands by itself , it does not lead to excommunication. Although, the reasons for an interdict and excommunication maybe the same. But, I would like to point out
that throughtout the Catholic Church history , interdicts have been meted out against a whole country ( France ) and other orders
( The Franciscans and the Society of Jesus) .
If you want to read about interdicts and their effects , you
probably should read more about St. Bernadette and Lourdes.
Blessed Padre Pio and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

St.Bernadette was once banned from going to the grotto of Lourdes by the diocese . Padre Pio was banned from saying Mass and mother Teresa was once told to stop ministering to the
poor. The list goes on and on.

My hope , is that in the fulness of time , the miscommunications and errors about the BNP will be resolved and the interdicts lifted .

May God Bless you and yours

Hello there Believer112! and everyone else…

Sad there is sooooo much prejudice against us out there. 😦 If only they knew of the good works BNP does for Catholicism.

I was in BNP in the early 90’s, so were my cousins. My family, at least the elders, were very much into that church. The times I spent in the church were definitely one of the strangest times of my life and the things that happened to me while in it, I will never forget.

Firstly, let me start by stating that there seems to be something just not right about the church. There are a lot of brainwashed elders. What could be strange you say? Well, what I will tell you, you may never believe, nor would I expect you to. Anyhow, here’s what I have seen with my very own eyes and I still to this very day don’t have an explanation for it…

I witnessed the “instrument”, Ate Salve, dressed in a robe (white/blue) like Jesus would wear, walk out… and then, I kid you not, started glowing… she walked another few steps, stopped, then shrunk into a statue of infant Jesus. A few moments later, she morphed back to herself and fainted.I know this may sounds crazy to those that weren’t there. But I promise you it happened. Camera tricks, smoke, mirrors? Not sure. But it seemed real to me. My cousin was there with me and witnessed all of this as well.

About a month or so later, I went to a BNP outing with my aunt and uncle. It was in a state park and everyone from BNP was there to go camping and be amongst friends. Anyhow, later that night there was a prayer/vigil. Well, this I will never understand either… all of a sudden the air got hot and stuffy, then a glowing figure of Jesus was floating in the trees. I can’t stress enough how I know that this may sound extremely insane, because I would probably think the same thing if I hadn’t seen it myself.

Anyhow, I will tell you that the majority of the people in BNP are good people. Heck, maybe they all are. But I had a feeling that something just wasn’t right about the entire thing. In fact, the churches around me have banned them from holding masses there. It’s just a very, very, strange church and I will never forget what I experienced there.

What you described is very familiar to me and most BNP members. The phenomena that accompanies the appearances of Mahal Na Ingkong has long been the subject of discussion among BNP members,
believe me it is not done with smoke and mirrors .

What you saw was and is real . You can never explain it with your mind ,because the events are impossible to duplicate and impossible for a mere human to do . So I leave with this question.

Ask yourself , who was it you saw ?? and why did He let you see it .

Hello and here is what you need to know about the BNP. First, I joined the BNP in the year of the Lord 1985 Apostolic Mission Class 23 in Los Angeles, California. I was privilege enough to be called as a Regular Staff. Now, the question is “Does the BNP a catholic movement?” First let us define what is being Catholic or Roman Catholic. Catholic means Universal and to qualify as a Catholic, you must be baptized as a Roman Catholic and you profess your faith with the Eucharist, Mother Mary and the Apostolic Church. Being Catholic we have to believe in our heart that the Holy Eucharist is the actual Body of our Lord Jesus Christ and that Mother Mary has a special role of Saving Sinners. We have to believe as Catholic that Mother Mary is the Mother of the Church and she has intercession power. We also have to profess our faith with the Holy and Apostolic Church. We also have to acknowledge that the POPE is the Vicar of Christ and continue the lineage of PETER the Apostle. Now with all these things said, What does the BNP Stands? BNP have a VIGIL ADORATION every FRIDAY in all the Chapters including the Mother Chapter which is in Ontario California. All the Men and Women including YOUTHs gather every FRIDAY from 7 pm to 6 am following morning to ADORE the BLESSED SACRAMENT or the HOLY EUCHARIST. Come Sunday all members are encouraged to attend MASSES on their parishes. MONDAY all the chapters are going house to house to PRAY the ROSARY through the FATIMA DEVOTION. The members are bringing the FATIMA to peoples’ houses to get them to pray the Rosary and be together as a family. Tuesday, everyone comes to the mother chapter to have a gathering of the members to discuss day to day issues and learn more about our Faith. Wednesday, The Regular Staff have a meeting that last sometimes until 2 am to tackle different issues of the entire movement and its members. Thursday, The elders will meet to discuss issues about the Regular Staffs and the inner working of the Movement. Friday will Start again with VIGIL ADORATION. With all these said, Does member of BNP have time to do BAD Things? Now to answer your question if the BNP is a Catholic movement, well you be the judge? I think the BNP pretty much has fulfilled the qualification of being Catholic. The big difference as a BNP movement, you will understand fully your personal relationship with CHRIST and how to deal with different attitudes of people putting them first before yourself. The BNP will train you how to serve people with humility. So is the BNP good? the choice is up to you! BNP is just a perfect tool to achieve your personal relationship with CHRIST.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
BNP BANNED BY THE CHURCH? the BNP is not banned by the church but by the ARCHDIOCESE who had received falls information about the movement. These church officials who draft the letter did not even spend time with the movement to see if the accusation was TRUE! In the year 1988, the entire movement challenged the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to all out talk with all the Members and non members’ presence to clarify all the key issues the Church have with the BNP. BNP have given the Archdiocese enough time to respond but when the time comes, None of the Archdiocese representative show up in SAN JOSE CALIFORNIA. Thousands of members and non members were eagerly waiting for the Archdiocese that day. The BNP then presents all the Key Issues with people and had given answers to all of them. SO I guess the BANNED LETTER is just ONE SIDED. Does the BANNED LETTER mean anything? Well going back to JESUS times, HE is also BANNED from the entire synagogue but it did not stop HIM from doing what He needs to do “PREACH the GOOD NEWS”. Who were these people? CHURCH OFFICIALS! the bottom line is What was CHRIST trying to do? bring back people to HIM! What does the BNP do? Bring back people to GOD! Now does it matter? Only you can answer that.
WHO IS MNI (MAHAL NA INGKONG)?
Lets dissect the phrase, MAHAL = LOVE, INGKONG = GREAT GRAND FATHER. In English the phrase means BELOVED GRANNY! Now is it an abomination to call our GOD the BELOVED GRAND DADDY? Again the entire meanings depends upon the persons intentions. Like the Catholic Church has been accused of IDOLATRY by our Christian brothers (Born Again) and if you look at the WORD of GOD it is indeed an IDOLATRY PRACTICE for GENESIS, EXODUS, DEUTERONOMY, PSALMS AND LETTERS OF PAUL have clearly states that Do not pray to anything made by Man’s hands for they have eyes but cannot see! They have ears but cannot hear! They have hands but cannot not touch! They have feet but cannot walk! They have mouth but cannot speak! With these illustrations, it is clearly describing all figurines and statues the Roman Catholic has! The SCRIPTURES also CLEARLY SAYS that WE SHOULD WORSHIP THE LORD OUR GOD IN SPIRIT IN TRUTH! With these said, the Roman Catholic Practices is walking in a thin fine line regarding Idolatry! So to clarify these, it is in individual intentions and understanding of the WORD OF GOD. If you use such statues as just a tool to commune with our SPIRIT GOD then you are good but if you idolize the Statue as if it is GOD himself then you are in trouble! Personally, I am playing safe: The only thing GOD has left for us to KNOW and LOVE HIM is his WORDS. I know that is not COMPLETE in the sense of answering all our questions but it is COMPLETE in regards to our SALVATION! “GOD WORDS SAYS TO WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH AND THAT’S WHAT I AM GOING TO DO!” Going back to the question of MNI or Mahal na Ingkong, it is another language for the name of GOD: In Spanish they call Him El Senor; The Jew call him so many names to mention! YAHWEH, JHS, YWH, El Adonai, El Shaddai, El Elohim, and etc… Again who are we referring to this name: To be safe, put in your mind that the name you invoke GOD is the same GOD of ABRAHAM, ISAAC, AND JACOB or JESUS the CHRIST or EMMANUEL. MAHAL NA INGKONG is just a name the BNP use to call the GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!
ATE SALVE?
She is just an instrument God is using to remind his people that GOD is ALIVE and working in our lives. She is like Mother Theresa in whom GOD uses to tell our Indian brothers and sisters that GOD is LOVE! ATE SALVE is like any of us who are being used by GOD to touch people’s lives. WHY DID SHE MARRY AGAIN? Well every one needs companion in life! The Roman Catholic forbids one to divorce and marry again but they have instituted ANNULMENT! So the Church wants us to use the power of the Church to disregard Marriage and yet the Scripture Clearly states that ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN IN AN ADULTEROUS RELATIONSHIP HAS THE RIGHT TO ASK FOR A CERTIFICATE OF A DIVORCE. JESUS CHRIST also clarify this in his gospel that MOSES issue the certificate of divorce because the people are stubborn but for GOD no one should leave his or her husband or wives! Again CHRIST respects the AUTHORITY OF MOSES or his representatives! The issue now is, is it o.k. to divorce? According to Scripture the only thing that would allow anyone to divorce is if one has an adulterous relationship! In the case of ATE SALVE, her Ex husband had an adulterous affair. Now if you want to know more about this, I think it is not right for ATE SALVE has her right to her own privacy and the Ex husband has a right to explain his mistakes! But base on the fact, ATE SALVE has every right to be happy and just because she Marries again it does not mean she had compromise her leadership to the movement. The bottom line once again is what is the fruits of her leadership. One can ask so many that through the BNP and Ate Salve they have learned to LOVE more, GIVE more, and Pray more! Now my personally experienced with ATE SALVE, I LOVE HER LIKE A MOTHER! I am very fortunate to get to her in a very special way and through out the years she has taught me to be humble, compassionate, and to LOVE GOD with al my heart, soul, and strength and love my brothers and sisters as GOD has Love them.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THE BNP? you bet, if you really want to know about your FAITH with CHRIST and your LOVE to his CHURCH (Roman Catholic Church) then this is the best place to be; BUT if you really want to know your SAVIOUR in a very personal way, I highly suggest to read His WORDS. The HOLY BIBLE! Once you have given His WORDS a chance to transform you into a beautiful creation try CALVARY CHAPEL. Listen to 107.9 FM.
THANK YOU and GOD BLESS ALL US: THE HARVEST IS PLENTY BUT THE LABORERS ARE FEW. LOVE MORE, GIVE MORE, SHARE MORE AND LAUGH MORE. The Children of GOD should be the joyous people in the world for we know that this place is just a training ground for us to achieve our ultimate reward " To be with Him in Paradise"! ROMANS 10 says “ Unless you confess with your mouth that JESUS is LORD and BELIEVE in your HEART that He died and ROSE again YOU cannot Enter the KINGDOM of GOD”! and JOHN 3 says “ Unless you are BORN AGAIN you cannot SEE the KINGDOM of GOD”! What is it to be born again? SEE ROMANS 10!

GOD BLESS US ALL and always remember “ YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW”…… LOVE more, GIVE more, SHARE more, and LAUGH more for LIFE is too SHORT to be MISERABLE! WE are ALWAYS CONFRONTED with 2 CHOICES? TO WIN or to LOSE! The choice is in your HANDS.

With all the controversy around B.N.P. and the fact that you even have to write a long winded post about it to justify it as a valid denomination is more than enough to keep me away from it. If the archdiocese, a branch within the church, won’t even let you in is more than enough to tell people to stay away.

I was in B.N.P. almost 20 years ago, I have experienced it. But I also know that it’s a scam and was willing to facts about the church that show it to be a scam. I feel terrible that many good people in B.N.P. are drawn to it because of the fellowship and kind bigheartedness of most people in it, but the fact is the leadership is just taking the money to help Ate Salve have a lavish lifestyle for her kids in Philippines. This is true, do your research.

With as much passion as you have for B.N.P., you would be better serving God by serving a denomination that doesn’t believe in idolization and witchcraft.
