B.N.P.? They claim to be Catholic ... anyone know?

Let me share with you my limited experience with Banal na Pag-aaral. My wife has been a member for about 4 years. Mostly, in this area, it is a group of Filipina ladies who meet every second week to pray the rosary and have snacks. 20 minutes of prayer, followed by 4 hours of fellowship. Mostly, AFAIK, it’s a chance for these immigrant ladies to express their culture and enjoy each other’s company.

We went to a retreat a couple of years ago, about St Mary and the Fatima apparitions, and a few things about the retreat seemed a little off. For one thing, brochures advertising the retreat identified the facilitators as “Sr. so-and-so,” which gave the impression that they were nuns. They were lay people. They taught some things that were not really Catholic teachings, and they did not entertain questions or discussion. They separated the men and women. My wife was brought to tears by a presentation in Tagalog language, and they would not let me approach her. So I’m kinda suspicious of these people, but this is only my impression.
 
Hello Once again to all my fellow GOD LOVER! I am realy sadden for GEEKORAMA who claims he/she has been with the movement for 20 years and yet finally realized that he /she been mislead! WOW I do not understand why it took you 20 years to realize that you had been milead!!! Maybe you are one of those people who has a personal agenda on the movement! WELL what ever it is I am glad that you are right with GOD right now. I hope I can share a bit of advise for you, “You cannot judge anyone or anything for only GOD is the judge and all you can do is pray for those people you think is not right with GOD”. I hope you are reading the WORD OF GOD to give you a base line of what is RIGHT and WRONG. NOw, if ATE SALVE is taking MONEY from the people (which I personally disagree) let GOD deal with her but for those lay people who been inspired to change thier lives because of BNP, MNI, Ate Salve, WHAT DO YOU THINK OUR LORD WILL SAY? In the Scripture One of the Apostles told JESUS that someone in the other town is using his name to cast out demons and heal people and what should we do with them? JESUS then says “If they are using my name let them be!” (paraphrasing). The moral lesson is "If people are getting right with GOD with what you are doing then there should be no problem!. In any case I am praying for you that the Spirit of GOD heal you with your bitterness and that you might find forgiveness and healing.

Hello Masuerte, The reason they separate Men and Women on any retreat was for the obvious reason of privacy. I don’t think I will allow my wife, daughter or niece to go on a week end retreat with Men with them! Now, if your wife was in tears after the retreat the question I need to ask you was that? Did she become better or worst after the retreat? Only you can answer that question and I hope her Love for GOD increases and being manifested with a renewed LOVE for YOU. I hope you are encouraging your wife to LOVE GOD more so that she can repay that LOVE for GOD in being so UNDERSTANDING and LOVING to you. I also would like to encourage both of you to READ the WORD of GOD daily so that you will have a solid foundation of your FAITH. PSALM1

I was in B.N.P. almost 20 years ago, I have experienced it. But I also know that it’s a scam and was willing to facts about the church that show it to be a scam. I feel terrible that many good people in B.N.P. are drawn to it because of the fellowship and kind bigheartedness of most people in it, but the fact is the leadership is just taking the money to help Ate Salve have a lavish lifestyle for her kids in Philippines. This is true, do your research.

With as much passion as you have for B.N.P., you would be better serving God by serving a denomination that doesn’t believe in idolization and witchcraft.

Please let me correct some obvious mistakes or misrepresentations , The BNP ( Banal Na Pag-aaral ) is a lay ministry. We spread the Good News about the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ by the retreat classes that we conduct.
It has never been a separate denominational church . Our members come from very active Catholic families . So the portrayal of the BNP as a different denomination is incorrect.

The portrayal of Ate Salve living a lavish lifestle in the Philippines is incorrect , since she has been a resident in California for the last twenty plus years . Since the premise of her being in the Philippines is false so the rest of the statement about her is false.

There is a lot of intentional and unintentional misinformation and accusations about the BNP . As to the allegation that we practice idolatry and witchcaft , nothing can be further from the truth . The BNP does not practice or espouse any of these beliefs.
If you have any evidence to the contrary , please share it with us.
I believe the 8th commandment says something about bearing false witness , please keep that in mind .

Can you please explain what you mean by Mary having a special role and intercessionary powers?

Thank you for uour interest in the BNP. We are a lay ministry whose stated goal is to spread the GOOD News of redemption and salvation . Our retreat house is located in Ontario ,California.

As to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s intercessionary powers these are very well documented in the BIble . she first intreceded in the what is considered as Jesus’ first public miracle at the wedding at Cana. She asked her Son to help the wedding ceremony .Jesus was hesitant, but at His mother’s insistence he relented and turned water into wine.

As Catholics we ask for the Blessed Virgin Mary’s intercesssion, We ask that She pray for us . We DO NOT pray to her.
This is best exemplified in the prayer Hail Mary.

HAIL MARY FULL OF GRACE , THE LORD IS WITH YOU
BLESSED ARE YOU AMONGST WOMEN AND BLESSED IS THE FRUIT OF YOUR WOMB, JESUS.
HOLY MARY PRAY FOR US SINNERS. NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH .

Well, if Ate Salve is disregarding the Church’s teaching on marriage (by remarrying invalidly), and preaching that she is right (as the following quote implies), then I can see why they’re getting banned.

First of all , Ate Salve’s first marriage was annulled , this is a matter of record. Because her petition for annulment was granted , this dissolves the marriage bonds of her first marriage in the eyes of the catholic church and in the eyes of God.

Please do not confuse annulment and divorce . Divorce dissolves the civil part of a marriage and allows for the distribution of a couple’s material possessions. An annulment on the other hand , dissolves the sacramental union. Basically after an annulment is granted , the sacramental marriage ceases to exist ,as if it never was performed…
the most common grounds for granting an annulment are bigamy. physical or mental coercion, and the failure to understand the consequences of the sacrament.

In the eyes of the Church, Ate Salve was single and free to marry and therefore the second marriage ceremony is valid and sacramental.

Please note , that divorce was never allowed in Scripture, regardless of the circumstances. that is why there is an admonition recited in every wedding about what God has put together , let no man put asunder.

Hello My Christian Friend Ruthie, First I would like to agree with brother believer that ATE SALVE had an ANNULMENT from our Mother CHURCH! It is also true that what GOD had put together no one should unbind but with our hard headedness Moses was given an authority by GOD to issue a certificate of a divorce on a circumstances of adultery! THen if we look at the GOspel specially MATHEW 5:31-32 Our LORD JESUS himself tackled the issue regarding DIVORCE! It is unfortunate that many of todays’ families are being ruined by the lies of our enemy (SATAN) that when one of the spouse made a mistake, DIVORCE is the easiest way out! This is why we should educate our youth about the importance of relationship and marriage! I was a victim of this and it was awful for the children! IN any rate, I Hope allof us be equipped with the WORD of GOD so that when we are face with satan’s lie we can take a stand! Remember, before JESUS started his ministry, He was tempted by the devil with his lies and JESUS uses the WORD to rebuke him 3 times! IT is an important lesson that the WORD of GOD is the most powerful deterence against satan. GOD BLESS to all of you and please remember me in your prayer.

Hello All,

I’ve been with the BNP (Banal Na Pag-aaral) for a while now and have seen/heard these debates of BNP being “good,” being “bad,” “Catholic,” “non-Catholic,” etc …

As with some of the ones who posted on this thread, I came into BNP knowing things about it from what others had told me or conversations that I overheard … I went into it believing that it was all just a big show and it was all fake.

Seeing the tree that the fruit has beared is one of the things that are key to me than changed my original thinking of the group.

Take me for example … I went from someone who went to church only for Christmas and Easter mass, to someone who goes every Sunday, sometimes, if possible during the workweek. I’ve gone from a person who did confession once in his life, to someone who regularly goes. I went from a life of not knowing God, not talking, not praying to Him … to taking every opportunity I have to doing so.

I’ve seen my close friends change their lives for the better, I’ve seen them come from broken homes, from gangs, to lives serving God and His people.

Personally, the only way I see those people’s lives changing for the better and a life full of the love of God, as well as for myself is through the Holy Spirit.

Just my take on it and I hope that helps.

Hello Jen J, Your topic regarding Mama Mary is very contriversial to the Christian World! as it was so controversial in the Pagan world 2000 years ago! It is very important to establish a base line to tackle such a contriversial issue. The ultimate GUIDE to our SALVATION is none other than the HOLY WORD OF GOD. It is true that if we try to fit all the things that GOD has done for mankind there is not enough TERABYTES to contain it. BUT HE allows the BIBLE to be complete and enough to KNOW, LOVE, SERVE HIM and US to have a guide on achieving our SALVATION. THere is non much important for GOD than to see US achieve the greatest reward in life which is to be with HIM eternally. This was the ULTIMATE PLAN!!! Now having said that, all the GREAT MAN and WOMAN of GOD becomes GREAT because they follow ONE THING? GOD! You have not heard anyone of the Saints and Martyrs followed PETER, JOHN, JAMES or PAUL! THey all followed CHRIST and got to know JESUS well through HIS WORDS. Our Mother CHURCH does not want the lay people back then to READ the SCRIPTURES because it dreaded them to see it being mis-interpreted. THis is how much our Mother CHURCH respected the WORD OF GOD (the BIBLE)! Just Imagine 40 Authors 66 Books written in differrent ERAS not having the Internet nor MAIL system to collaborate the message and yet bring about one main theme which the LOVE of CHRIST JESUS to mankind and HIS ROLE in bringing HEAVEN back to US! Having said this, our Ultimate GUIDE in answering all the contreversial issues regarding our FAITH and SALVATION should be the BIBLE or the WORD OF GOD.
Now what ROLE does Mama MARY has for our salvation? She bore CHRIST as the Scripture says. NOw does the ASSUMPTION matters? It was not mentioned in the BIBLE so I guess it does not matter with our SALVATION? What Matter is Mama MARY is with our Father in Heaven enjoying every eternal moment with the PRESENCE of GOD. Mama Mary is there because of her son JESUS! Now is it right to ask for her intercession? WHY NOT if that would bring you closer to JESUS but you have to understand that ONLY JESUS can give SALVATION! No one ELSE!!! The Scripture say “I AM THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE AND NO ONE CAN COME TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME” now if JESUS himself said that, WHY do we have to challenge it? You know once we reach the age of FORTY, We begin to examine a lot of things specially our salvation (if We are smart!) then we begin to say to ourselves I should play safe and not fool around with my eternity (after life). NOw having this thought, what is the safest way to guarantee SALVATION? Well, GOD HIMSELF SAID" I AM THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE…“then lets FOCUS on JESUS. Then ROMANS 10:9 says " If you confess in your mouth that JESUS is LORD and believe in your hearth that GOD raised HIM up from the dead, you will be SAVED” then lets say to everyone that JESUS is LORD and believe in our heart that GOD raised him up from the dead! JOHN 3:16 say " FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONE AND ONLY SON SO THAT EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE" this says it all!!! So if we are smart and want to secure our salvation then we should hang on to this promise! Remember GOD does not BREAK HIS WORDS and in fact GOD LOVES TO FULFILL HIS WORDS… so in closing DOES THE TOPIC OF MARY IMPORTANT? OF COURSE! SHE brought CHRIST to us but we should not lose the ULTIMATE REASON… to bring CHRIST to ALL of US. IT is all about JESUS…
