Babies after 40?

My mother was just a month shy of 42 when I was born. Dad was 53.

Our last son was born the same month I turned 40. I am now 48.
Our children are:
28, 27 & 27(twins), 25, 20, 17, 13, 12, 10, 8.
7 sons 3 daughters…
I highly recommend having all the kids the good Lord is willing to let you have. Yes, it is tough but we all find out how to get by. We are down to the last 5 now and he (17yr) will be moving out this summer to go live with his 20yr old brother in New Mexico. Since I home school till high school, our 14yr old (girl) will be attending the local HS so I will only have 3 at home all day.

Anyone, say, closer to 45?
And what is different than in your '30s? I had my last baby at 37 and it was soo different, I thought “I’m much too young to experience peri menopause!” What I thought were hot flashes was a pregnancy.

I had a baby a few weeks after turning 41. We have 7 kids - had our first when I was 29, so I don’t know if my body ever caught on to the fact that I was old.

I had two of our ten kids after 40-- one at age 40, the last at age 43.

in my twenties, i bounced back from childbirth. in my thirties, i meandered back. in my forties, i crawled up out of a deep hole. postpartum was hard.

look at the littlest faces in the pic below. i wouldn’t have done a single thing different.

Well, don’t know if this counts…but both of my grandma’s had babies into their 40’s. My grandma had my dad at 43 and my other grandma was probably around 44’ish when she had her last baby (of 13).

Needless to say, I’m expecting to be quite fertile for awhile. 😃 (I’m 32)

ETA now that I think about it, I think grandma was 44 when she had my dad. I’m not sure how old he is. :o

My mom had my two youngest siblings at 41 and 43. Health-wise she had uneventful pregnancies, but I think pregnancy can be hard and when you’re older it’ll be a little harder…I think she had worse fatigue/aches that I’m having at 24 with my first…although some days I think it’s about the same.

What surprised me, though, was that she had successful pregnancies in her forties and I had two miscarriages before getting pregnant with this baby…so you never know. Everyone has a different experience. 🤷

About 75 years ago, my grandmother and 2 of her sisters all had babies.

My grandmother was 46, one sister was 44 and the other was 42.

And I don’t believe they had the best health care the, either.

I’m a few months shy of 40 and I have a small baby.

We briefly considered it and then had the issue decided for us through a medical condition…but as someone close to your age…I can’t tell you how many times I catch myself wondering how in the world I would have kept up with one @ my age. Things do start slowing down~esp. your energy level. I also find my interests are moving on from issues that center around babies, toddlers, etc, and I’m not missing it at all. For me it is the assurance that things worked out the way they were supposed to. Baby-making is a young womans’ sport…and here’s one mama who’s all too happy to leave it to the younger gals!!

My wife and I started having babies at 19; we have ten living children, one in heaven along with several who never saw a breath due to miscarriages who are also there. I am in my mid-forties now, and we have a 3/12 year old and two babies 18 and 19 months. The last three of ours came via foster care and are now being adopted.

I’m also a grandfather, by the way.

I can say, without reservation, the best gift a parent can give themselves is to have a child, or children, in their forties. You’re mature enough to be confidant, ready for anything and prepared to handle the ups and downs life gives you, but you still have (almost) enough energy to deal with the little ones. Younger parents are faced with still having to do some growing up themselves (I speak from experience), having to establish themselves in careers, buy houses and figure out life as an adult. Being past forty means you’ve probably managed to do most of that. Now, you can just concentrate on being a parent. It’s an amazing difference, liberating actually.

I have had many, many blessings in my life, but nothing that tops the gift of these last three girls. If you’re blessed to have children a little later in life, then God has smiled upon you.

I only know of one woman who had a baby close to 45…she was 44 when she conceived and 45 when she gave birth. He was the same age. Their baby is a beautiful 4 year old girl. She had a c-section which is common for older women and also had hbp.

I know that it’s more rare for women over 43 to become pregnant. About 20% of women are fertile after age 43.

Are you hoping to be pregnant? Are you around 45? If I were you, I’d get checked out right away…get the following tests:
  1. FSH level (see what your egg reserve is like)
  2. Estrogen level test (with the FSH test, it can determine egg quality)
  3. Get your uterus scanned for fibroids, endo, blockages, etc.
  4. Get your husbands sperm checked also
At the age of 45, it’s possible to get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy, but I would take all the tests just to see what your odds are.

I hope this helps!

My mother had ME when she was 43, and I turned out okay! 😃 Until a few years ago, I regularly joked that my mother always had more energy than me. She is almost 91 now (you do the math!), and has, of course, now slowed down considerably, but she says I kept her young!

My brother and his wife adopted their first baby when he was 51 and she 49. My neice is now three.

p.s. – I am glad I am here!

My mom had one at 38, one at 40, one at 42, and one just this past year, at 45. With the most recent three she had home births. She’s been in great health. Now there were a few complications – gestational diabetes with one, and with the most recent one she had all these varicose veins – but nothing serious. All the younger bunch are healthy.

Now, she has been a lot more tired with this batch than she was with my older brother and me. However, there are four of them, and they keep her up a lot at night. It’s harder to bounce back from all that when you’re 45. However, she seems to be getting on fine.

To answer your questions Serap, I’m 41, and no I’m not planning on getting pregnant, I’m making a future with my boyfriend, a sweet man I’ve known since 8th grade. You know- what if we… Something I’d never had with my 1st marriage. While, for medical reasons, a pregnancy may not be in the picture, I’m just wondering about it. These days I hear so much talk about “Boy she’s OLD to have a baby!” When my mom had a girl at 42, people asked if she was the Grandma, they actually thought one of our older sisters was the mom!

I really do love reading everyone’s remarks, keep them coming!

This is just my humble opinion, but anyone who says that someone is too old to have a baby is being an idiot!!! A baby is a gift from God and if He gives a woman that gift, then God doesn’t think she’s too old!

My girlfriend’s aunt gave birth at age 48…she got pregnant naturally and the whole family was in shock.

I’d say that if you decide to get married, be open to life and let God decide. I’m so happy you’re in a happy relationship. That’s wonderful!!

My mom had my youngest sister at age 45. I was 16. Needless to say no one believed that I was just her sister! Although my mom was more tired with her recovery I’d have to say she was happier somehow too. My mom has way mellowed as we say and has far more patience with my youngest sister then she did with me and my brother…
Now that I have three of my own I have come to realize that anytime God sends a baby it is both a blessing and a good time to be having one!

she was happier somehow too.
our oldest was 25 when our newest was born. our kids say this about us, too. we’re happier, more peaceful.

all the little tragedies have proven to be nothing. and the very few big trials have brought us close to God.

I have several friends with babies after forty. One friend was 48!! I used to joke in my old rosary group that to remain a member you had to have a baby after 40. All the moms over 40 had a baby there.

I’m 39 and just had a baby. I don’t know whether to wish for another baby or not. I’m finding it’s pretty hard to take care of everyone’s needs. But, I think it’s because of our family size and maybe my own limitations than my age.

My sister had a baby at 40, but has has two miscarriages since. 😦
