Babies At Mass

I do not see anything inappropriate about saying that mothers carry burdens. If raising children were 100% a walk in the park, this thread wouldn’t exist. I love and value my son, but that doesn’t mean that being a parent is easy. I’m sure you know first-hand that burdens and crosses are inherent to parenthood.
Sorry, but never on my worst day did I consider any of my parenting experiences a burden. It’s a gift. No it’s not always easy but to see it as a burden is not in my thought process.

I agree with you that the thread is about people who don’t parent but when posters are writing that people should just ignore children’s behavior or it is another parent’s problem when a child goes off with their lack of parenting, it’s a red flag. Some parent’s have a real high tolerance for their own child’s behavior. Just as you state no one is debating the problem of parents who ignore, no one is debating the natural exuberance of children and the occasional bad day. Any parent who puts in an effort should be commended.

I’m sorry that your ex-husband beat you up. I’ll say a prayer that things get easier for you.

That is your view and you are very much entitled to it. I feel this thread reflects a very troubling anti-kid attitude.
Those of us who have children, volunteer with children, and have raised other’s children cannot be seen as “Anti-child”. It’s a problem in today’s society to see a discussion of behavior as a personal afront.
It’s the “I’m being oppressed” way of thinking.

Let me just state here. If your child goes off in Holy Mass, it’s a normal occurance. If it lasts for longer than five minutes and you have done nothing to stop it or smile at it, your behavior is offensive. Not your child’s.

So the answer is to bring them out of the crying room to do the same. If parents cannot or will not control their children in the crying room why do you think they will in the main church.

I was not specifically pointing a finger at you or your children but at the problem. It does not matter if you child did it or not, the damage is done. Ask any usher or sacristan or stay a few minutes after mass and take a walk trough the pews. I did not intend nor do I think I classified anyone as an animal. My post attempted to be a honest reflection based on actual experience. It is always the other children noise, isn’t it? For those that control their children, yes - there is no need for the crying room. This post concerns those that don’t.
I have stayed a few minutes after Mass…I have never seen what you have described…

The mass that I go to in our parish they have a Childrens Liturgy that is pretty popular so a lot of young families are at the Mass. Crying babies and screaming toddlers are a norm! But there are some parents and children who I purposely avoid sitting around. It’s not the kids, their behavior is normal for their age and they will eventually grow out of it - mine did!

It’s the parents that drive me crazy. The are constantly engaging their kids in conversation, even if their kids are sitting there behaving. I have seen one family actually give their children packets of fruit snacks, the children went across the aisle to hand them out to their friends in other pews

I also don’t blame parents for not going to the cry room - it’s a circus in there and when my kids were young I would rather stand in the foyer than to get involved in that nonsense!

If other children feed off it then that is the other parents problems.
So, it is my problem that my children have neurological disabilities and can’t help but feed off the mischief of others, and I should just deal with it? I certainly hope I’m misunderstanding you.

Let’s also ban all those Catholics who force other Catholics to hold hands during the Our Father and give us dirty looks if we choose not to do so. Or ban those grown adult Catholics, many of them btw, who seem to think Church is a place to brzenly and loudly talk about all sorts of social subjects while Mass is being celebrated, or think chewing gum in Church is fine, or think wearing ratty clothing or provocative clothing is fine…or any number of other things that mature adults do that could rattle the cages of the righteous Catholics.

Of course, banning all of the above would remove about 90% of the people in the pews…-]but the righteous would have peace./-] but the self absorbed adults who pay more attention to their neighbor than the Mass would have peace.
there, fixed that for you.

This might sound like a crazy idea but he it goes…

We are all Children of God, we attend Mass at as a Catholic Family, I know children can be a distraction and some parents can be less then perfect in displining their kids.

BUT can’t we just get along here? 🙂 Why not offer a Prayer up for that mother or father who seem not to get a clue that they might find guidence?

The Catholic Church, when I last checked was not only for the perfect parents, the most Faithful but for All!👍

For those who feel they are “missing out” because they can’t hear, maybe there is a reason for this because God might want you to learn some tolerance for your fellowman (or child).
How can you call yourself a Good Catholic when you are annoyed at a group of small children making noise?

Children, all children act up at sometime or another. Any mother who says their kid NEVER acted up in someway is a liar. Unfortunately some children choose a store or a worse Church to act up, while most do at home.

I say this with all due respect, yet your attitude about this is offensive. You set yourself up as the judge of all parents and children, without knowing anything about those parents and children and what they might be going through. Weak Catholics would hear you and run for the door. As for my family, we do quite well without you as our judge and jury. There are far more offensive things done by adults, then children, yet I do not sit in judgment of this people.

I’ll say it again. If you are the the kind of parent who makes an honest effort with regards to your children’s behavior at mass----his thread is not about you.

Maybe it’s just where I live, but children acting unruly, and parents sitting by doing nothing, is common practice at my parish. The Saturday mass is quite wonderful, but both Sunday masses are chaos.

I am not being judgemental, nor am I self-rightous in pointing out the obvious. Most parents try very hard to keep their kids in line. Unfortunately, all it takes is one parent who doesn’t to make mass difficult for the rest of us.

Please don’t be offended. I am not saying this in anger towards anyone. Consider doing something. Ask your parents, or grandparents, how children behaved in mass, resteraunts, grocery stores, etc. I’ll bet they tell you that overall children behaved better back then. There were more people (adults and children) in mass then and people generally had more children then.

Pointing out the problems of behavior with children in our secular “pop psychology” culture doesn’t equate to not ecourageing a “culture of life” (as some posts have elluded to).

It just comes down to lack of good old fashion manners.😉
Okay, so where, in each Church, does the judge of honest effort sit?

Pure and simple, stop judging other people. You are at Mass to worship God, nothing else. If you are having problems hearing Mass due to a child, cell phone, people talking behind you, the sound system not being loud enough etc. so be it. If you want to be sure you will hear make sure you get to Mass early enough to sit in the front.

Except for the readings of the day, the homily, and the announcements you already know what they are saying. If it is a problem hearing the readings, bring the Magnificat or look at the Missal if there is one provided. At my church one of the priests has a VERY thick accent so many people need to read in order to “hear”.

I would venture to say in at least 90% of the cases with parents, they are more worried about how noisy their kid is then you are. Yes the other 10% give everyone with kids a bad name, but this is a church that supports life. We need to support it in all its forms. Even the 10% that may appear not worried about their kids, who knows what is going on in their life.

At Mass worry about the things you should be worrying about (your personal worship of God) don’t worry about the other things. If the problem is a reoccuring thing that can be dealt with (i.e. bad sound system) talk things over with the pastor.

This weekend I saw several people upset at church over the fact that someone kept on receiving cell phone calls at church. Little did they realize that the “cell phone calls” was actually an alarm on a person’s resperator.

Stop worrying yourself about the actions of others, worry about the plank in your own eye.

interestingly ironic you enjoy my witty sarcasm so much being that a good number of my observations spring to life in response to your musings. keep drinking from the well. it’s good for the mind.
I know where it’s at. I’ve seen you on many posts. So many in response to mine. However, just because we don’t agree doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate your wit!

Some people are masters and the subject is not as important as the art.

I respect your opinion, and your right to have it. I suspect that you respect my right to have mine as well.
