Nearly 40 years after the world was jolted by the birth of the first test-tube baby, a new revolution in reproductive technology is on the horizon — and it promises to be far more controversial than in vitro fertilization ever was.

Within a decade or two, researchers say, scientists will likely be able to create a baby from human skin cells that have been coaxed to grow into eggs and sperm and used to create embryos to implant in a womb.

The process, in vitro gametogenesis, or I.V.G., so far has been used only in mice. But stem cell biologists say it is only a matter of time before it could be used in human reproduction — opening up mind-boggling possibilities.

With I.V.G., two men could have a baby that was biologically related to both of them, by using skin cells from one to make an egg that would be fertilized by sperm from the other. Women with fertility problems could have eggs made from their skin cells, rather than go through the lengthy and expensive process of stimulating their ovaries to retrieve their eggs.

“It gives me an unsettled feeling because we don’t know what this could lead to,” said Paul Knoepfler, a stem cell researcher at the University of California, Davis. “You can imagine one man providing both the eggs and the sperm, almost like cloning himself. You can imagine that eggs becoming so easily available would lead to designer babies.”

It won’t surprise me if the anti-Christ is conceived in such a situation or similar.

Maybe, but would God allow such a thing to happen, that is the question.

Combined with advances in artificial womb technology, the typical limits on fertility become optional.

And how long will it take for scientists to create a spiritual soul that can enter the presence of the Beatific Vision? In the State of Sanctifying Grace?

The human person is worthy of profound respect. Genesis 1: 27

That’s an interesting point. I think that if they succeed and the person lives than they have an immortal soul. A human without a soul is simply a pile of dead matter.

That said, I don’t think we should even attempt this.

You took the words out of my mouth. The Blessed Virgin Mary was the purest of mankind: sin free. Active homosexuals are the exact opposite and go against God’s law. A child of theirs would be the opposite of how Jesus came into the world. An opposite of Jesus is the Antichrist.

The next question - will these beings be declared non-human?

Of course not, they will be fully human with an immortal soul. I’ve seen people imply the same about children conceived by IVF. Denying the humanity of humans is a terrible thing to do.

Conceived with IVF is way, way different from growing some kind of human flesh from skin cells.

Agree. From skin cells - how long before someone says the soul is imparted into the sperm and egg prior to conception…then gestate in a artificial womb. Next, take a case to the ninth district court, have it declared non-human, and now you are CEO of the biggest body part provider in the world.

Very disturbing. And typically human I fear.

But if it works and they live, the person will be a person with an immortal soul.

It’s been a very long time since I attempted to understand Aquinas so I’m forgetting the basics and where to find what I’m looking for. From what I remember, he concluded that if an animal has free will and a rational mind, they have an immortal soul. This would even be extended to extraterrestrials (again affirmed by Aquinas, I think it’s in the part that talks about our need of Christ for salvation?).

If I remember tonight I’ll look through my books although I’m very well known for forgetting everything.

And you can see how much the teachings of the church affect current legal rulings…personally, I agree with you, but given the 21st Century mindset…not sure it will go that way.

Animals can be highly sentient, but that does not mean they are capable of initiating the State of Sanctifying Grace.

This sounds about as far fetched as the one claiming the imminent transplants of a head onto another human body! Frankenstein indeed!

More likely that the technology would be used to grow individual organs in the equivalent of petri dishes, thereby creating organs using the patient’s own DNA.

Which leaves the question of how many organs or which combination of organs until it becomes a person? Is everything below the jaw acceptable?
