Baby Manuel was born on May 10.
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, June 1, 2011 (OperationRescue.org) - A teen mother, who was saved from a coerced abortion last October after a sidewalk counselor texted her while she was inside the clinic, has given birth to a beautiful, healthy boy named Manuel.

The little boy was born on May 10 weighing 7 pounds. The following week, his mother proudly graduated from high school.

Tara Shaver, a former intern for Operation Rescue, was sidewalk counseling outside Planned Parenthood in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when she received a call from a woman who told her that her grandson’s girlfriend was being forced to get an abortion that she did not want. The woman told Tara that her grandson, the baby’s father, also wanted to keep the baby. They were desperate, because the girl was only 17 and her mother was insisting on the abortion against the girl’s will. The grandmother gave Tara the teen’s cell phone number.

The one thing many young mothers lack once inside an abortion clinic is, ironically, a choice. They are pressured into abortion. It is great that someone came to this young woman’s assistance when her choice was being forced.

The “happily ever after” in these many pro-life stories is of course that the mother gives life to her child. End of story. But there is a piece missing and I think after all these decades of focusing on saving babies, we need to admit, especially as Catholics, we are not doing the whole job unless we also try to save the FAMILY.

This story at least has a seemingly responsible and supportive young father. Whether they married or not is apparently not considered a point worth mentioning in the story.

More often than not, in magazines and online stories, again and again, the woman is a teen and abandoned by her boyfriend. Of course abortion is wrong, but is bringing a poverty-stricken illegitimate child into the world reason for jumping up and down ecstatically?

In the past few years as I read the materials from the SIX pro-life charities I support, I find myself questioning if I want to keep funding a future society of children who statistically and morally are at a great disadvantage. Many of these young mothers stay dependent on the State or Catholic Charities or such, themselves remaining uneducated, and often yet another baby (sans Father) comes along.

Now that the homosexuals are putting the Catholic adoption agencies out of business, this is a perfect opportunity to develop resources and start encouraging placement of these babies in loving, 2-parent, financially secure homes.

I know someone is going to rail against me and say I’m prejudiced but these are facts. Yes a young single mom can make it, but what is “make it”? We all know studies and simple common sense indicates a baby placed in a nurturing home with 2 emotionally ready parents is going to produce a child with more confidence, learning ability, social skills, and moral foundation.

I just think we need to stop popping the champagne cork when the baby is born and look a bit further down the road, and use legal measures too when necessary to encourage the support from the Father.

This seems to me the silent shame of the pro-life movement that is never discussed. We are contributing to an underclass society. Yes, this is the SAME rationale the abortionists use! That is my point, it’s about time we turned it to the advantage of the child. There is more to being a mother than giving birth.

Terrific post! 👍

For Catholics, “Pro-Life” means from conception to natural death - it does not end with a baby’s birth. I couldn’t agree more with the idea of society holding fathers accountable for their own children as well as empowering women to get off of welfare.

I know that at least one Pro-Life organization seeks to address the very issues you describe. Feminists for Life has been advocating for a comprehensive Pro-Life agenda for years. Here is one of their publications that addresses the role of fathers:

I agree that being pro-life means being pro-family. It is a much wider problem because the culture and the government and laws have done much to destroy family structure over the past 60 years. Even textbooks currently will not recognize mom, dad, and children as family or as the basis of society. Contraception, no-fault divorce, gay rights, all exert a destructive force on family.
