Baby Boy Names

I need your help and suggestions. We are having a baby in two months, and cannot agree on a Boys name. We are not going to find out what we are having. We picked a girls name, Eleanor Therese. The middle name of the boy will be Augustine.

Here are a few that we have so far but that cannot be agreed on:

Xavier-I Like
Maximilian-I Like

Patrick-Wife Likes
Grant- Wife Likes
 
Some things to ponder…

Do you have a special family origin you’d like to honor (Irish, Italian, German, etc)?
Do you have any special meanings of names that you consider special?
Any deceased family that you’d like to honor?
Avoiding or using popular names?

Far be it from me to wedge into family matters, but you asked.

Xavier is nice, but too many people see it and say “igzavier”. I hate that.

Maximilian is doubtless after Maximilian Kolbe, but…I don’t know. He’ll end up as “Max”, which is okay, I guess, but it seems just a bit “waterfront” to me.

Patrick, I like. I vote for Patrick. People will call him “Pat”, which has a nice sound to it.

Grant is not a saint’s name that I know of. I favor saints’ names.
 
I like Xavier best of those four.

Why not take one from both of your lists. Like one of the wife’s names for a first name and one of yours for a middle name. Or the other way around.

Patrick Xavier or Xavier Patrick both have a nice ring. 🙂 Maximillian Grant also sounds nice, but not the other way around. 🤷

Since your wife has spent nine months carrying this boy, don’t be surprised if her name gets picked as the first name. 😉
 
Grant–ugh. Reminds me of Hugh Grant.

Xavier–cool, but what will you use as a nickname?

Maximillian–I like this too, but to everyone will definitely call him Max.

Patrick–not bad.
 
I like all the names you listed, though I always found “Xavier” to cofuse people as to the pronounciation.
If the middle name is “Augustine”, then “Maximillian” seems way too long for a first name, unless you are going for “Spanish Aristocracy” type of naming.
Maybe if you keep searching, you will find a name that you both like. Me and my husband fought terrible over our 2nd child’s name, but the 3rd, we finally found one we both liked and it was such a relief!
We have 3 girls, but if we ever have a boy, I really like the name “Seamus”.
 
We are trying to come up with Irish names, but my sister just used our favorite, Colin. Grant is her mothers maiden name. I just don’t like the name Patrick, because of the nickname Pat.

You don’t have to use a nickname. There are many parents who ask that you not abbreviate their child’s name. So if you are alright with Patrick, but don’t like ‘Pat’, then keep Patrick as an option and ask that it not be abbreviated by family and friends.
 
My Patrick is only 4 years old and already refuses to let anyone call him “Pat”. There are tons of great Irish names out there, the only one I would advise against is Aidan. I have one and that name is everywhere, along with its soud alikes, Braden, Caden, and Hayden. I like all the names you listed, but I like Grant the least. 🤷 there is also the chance that you won’t need a boy name 😃 or that he’ll come out and you will both think immediatly that “He looks like a ____!”
 
You could go with Scottish Gaelic names. Not all that different from Irish ones, and it would honor the Grant side of the family.

I personally recommend St. Magnus. You can’t get much tougher than a half-Scottish, half-Norse duke of Orkney, who willingly submits to martyrdom. Also, it sounds similar to Maximilian but is shorter and punchier.

But there’s tons of worthy guys’ names to choose.
 
Of the choices you listed, I like Patrick the best. It’s very traditional.
 
I love Patrick - one of my favorite names. Grant…blah.

Xavier Augustine and Maximilian Augustine are very formidable names that sound, to me, like Hapsburg Emperors. 😉 Xavier will always be mispronounced, and Maximilian will, surely, become Max.

My vote is with Patrick Augustine. (And thank you for selecting my middle name as the girl’s middle name!)
 
My children (adults) have a friend (the son of a good friend of mine) whose name is Patrick. He has a very Irish last name. From birth his “shortened” name has always been “Paddy” which to me is very Irish. By high school he had shortened it to “Pat”. but I guess my dd who was a freshman when “Pat” was a senior never got that info. On the first day of school, she saw him in the hall and greeted him with hug and “Paddy” if front of his friends who heard “Patty”. After that she has always referred to him as Patrick (at least in public.) Patrick has an older brother Sean Thomas which also a good Irish sounding name.
 
One consideration before making suggestions … what about the last name? Just the beginning letter and the number of syllables (and if it’s clearly of a particular national origin, what one)? Also, do any of the first name suggestions rhyme with the last name?

I really like Xavier, my little guy is Joseph Xavier, 🤷 so that may have something to do with it! 😃 BTW like your girls name, had we had a girl her name would have been Ann Therese.
 
I’m partial to Patrick myself, but here’s a few more for consideration maybe…

Brendan (also one of my favorite names) Brendan Augustine has a definite regal ring to it

I’d like to second the idea of going to the baby name wizard voyager. There’s also an advanced search available where you can ask to include or exclude names based on starting letters, traits such as whether it’s a saint’s name, popularity, etc: babynamewizard.com/namipedia/advanced-name-finder

This site will suggest names based on the names you enter. You can enter the names you both like as inspirations, and see what the tool suggests. Hopefully you can find a name you both love!

As for a nickname we call him Zavey, Zave, and even Ziggy (grandpa started that one). But nicknames don’t have to be related to a given name at all. Or can be from the middle of a name. (like Annie from Arianna).

I don’t care much for Xavier. It sounds a bit too exotic for me. I would avoid giving your son a name that people would make fun of him for or he would hate. Maximillian is nice…you could call you son Max.

My favorite of the list is Patrick. I know I’m naming my firstborn son Luke.
