Those people are known as “Cafeteria Catholics” and treated with some disdain by those of us who fully accept all of the Church’s teaching. Since we believe that the Church teaches Truth, how arrogant it must be to say I am someone who can pick and choose my Truth from a smorgasbord table and leave some Truth untouched after it has been offered to me?
Pot, meet kettle.

Firing a **PREGNANT mother **depriving her and essentially her child of livelihood … so much for Catholic church blabber on protecting family, motherhood and children.

Disgusting…

Although, I shouldn’t be surprised…they’d rather throw children onto streets closing their adoption agencies just to avoid even a small chance of a child being adopted by gay people.

This will always be an issue with religious schools. This problem is not unique to catholic schools but somehow I only see the Catholic school firings in the news.
One of the issue with firing a person over sinning is that we will can only fire the person over the sin that is obvious like getting pregnant out of wedlock. When I was in high school the english teacher got fired (she became pregnant) but the P.E/swim coach was not (an we all new he slept around). The problem is how will you prove it for the latter unless someone gets pregnant for him.

Do you support the right of a private entity to promote their own values, as long as those values do not involve harming others?

The following is an excerpt from the Detroit Free Press this weekend.

This explains a whole lot. The nuns who run the school are known progressives. I also didn’t realize that the school operated outside the control of the Archdiocese of Detroit.

"IHM sisters were the predominant teaching order in southeastern Michigan during the mid-century heyday of Catholic schools.

Webb’s dismissal has clashed with the Monroe IHM sisters’ track record of championing progressive Catholic causes.

They have been peace and justice advocates, purchased stock shares to challenge corporate directors at stockholders meeting and renovated the Monroe motherhouse for retired sisters as a model of environmental self-sufficiency."

The adoption issue is entirely the fault of the government. The Catholic Church has been operating adoption services just fine for centuries. It’s the government that decided to step in. If they were that concerned about it they could just make an exception for Catholic institutions. They didn’t because their anti-Christian, secularist agenda is more important than anything. That being said I kinda had the same reaction to the firing that you did. I can understand morality clauses but it seems to me in the case of a pregnant mother you should make an exception. The innocent child needs prenatal care and a place to live. It seems heartless to me to toss them out on the street. Lets all pray that she finds another job soon.

Freedom for you, but not for me, makes all of us less free.

In the end, if the teacher taught at a public school, then this wouldn’t be an issue. Life, sometimes, is unfair and nobody really wins in situations like this. Still, both parties each have rights that need to be respected.

The teacher chose to work at a Catholic school. She chose to be in a gay relationship and have an “un-natural” pregnancy. The school chose to enforce a morality clause that the teacher freely signed as a condition of employment.

Of course, there is always gray area and room for ‘compassion’, but the fact remains that she was in a position of authority over the girls and a lot of parents expect a Catholic school to adhere to Catholic moral standards (because they pay for Catholic schooling for specific reasons, including the morality.)

People who work at charters/religious schools know that they are at-will employees, and a lot of the time, it’s standard practice to sign morality clauses as a part the terms of employment. (More so for religious schools than just non-religious private/charter schools.)

So, it’s really not just “she was pregnant” and it’s just “evil” that she lost her job.

It’s she violated an employment contract and the employer decided not to employ her anymore. People, including pregnant women, get fired over that kind of thing all the time.

Like I said, there aren’t any winners here and each has the right to make choices that are best for them. Sometimes, that creates conflict. That’s life.

So if a pregnant Catholic gets a job at an atheist non-profit like American Atheists, and said Catholic mom-to-be violates American Atheist’s longstanding code of conduct/employment terms, would you call her termination a reflection on atheists hating pregnant mothers? 🤷

Back when I was very liberal and proudly lapsed, I thought it was odd that my devout cousins weren’t sending their kids to Catholic school. Their reasoning was that the faith wasn’t taught there. Now, I totally get it. Special interests trump all others. This couple will sue…and probably win. And so will the next one and the next one and the next one. Prepare to see the church brought to her knees, because that is definitely on the agenda.

It would have been a lot more classy for this teacher to quit her job when she realized she was in violation of her contract.

Funny, my friend’s non-denom mega church doesn’t allow gay marriage either, and you never hear of people suing them to get what they want.

This happened in the last year or two in Columbus OH, save for the pregnancy.

The local media got a few kids to show up in front of the diocese offices to ‘protest’ when the camera was rolling. I’m sure they zoomed in quite a bit to make it seem like there were more than the 3 kids I walked by on the way to work.

But the ‘outrage’ was widespread!

Indeed. Manufacturing news instead of reporting it.

Really? Re-read your post and see if it doesn’t sound holier than thou.
I always find substantive responses more informative than personal assessments of other people.
You do realize that even most priests don’t agree 100% with all of the social dogma?
It doesn’t matter how many priests don’t agree.
Nope, Jesus would not, IMHO treat those cafeteria Catholics with any more disdain than he would those showering themselves with kudos for being so ultra holy.
Pointing out a position is contrary to the Church’s teachings is hardly “ultra holy”.

Jesus said “If you love Me, you will keep my commandments.”

Do you believe that to be a jest?
