Dear CAF brothers and sisters,

It has come to my attention that there is a plague of bad guacamole recipes afflicting the land. Here are some examples that have come to my attention:

cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015047-green-pea-guacamole?smid=tw-nytimes

abc7.com/food/watermelon-the-secret-ingredient-to-the-best-guacamole/1455327/

As twitterer Iowahawk says, “I’m kinda shocked the National Cranberry Board hasn’t jumped into this what-stuff-can-we-add-to-guacamole madness.”

Can anything be done?

(I confess that I accepted a free grocery store sample of bacon guacamole and it was actually really good.)

I made guacamole once with pineapple and it was delish. (Actually, I think the recipe called it an “avocado dip,” which may be more accurate.)

But my fave is with jalapeño, tomato, and cilantro from our own garden.j

ETA: Oh, I remember that pea thing. That is terrible, terrible.

Yeah–just serve pureed pea baby food and own it–don’t call it guacamole.

Hi Xantippe,

I looked at the recipes that you posted.

I don’t think that I would care for green peas mixed with guacamole, or guacamole mixed with watermelon, either. 😦

Pensmama,

I like your guacamole mix better, with the jalapeno pepper and the other garden veggies. Now that sounds delightful and delicious! 🙂

My wife doesn’t even like REGULAR quacamole.

We were watching a show called Cutthroat Kitchen once, and one of the judges observed, “I just don’t understand this modern culinary obsession of putting avocados on everything.”

My wife still hasn’t stopped applauding.

That is hilarious!

But I can’t agree. When you need avocado, you need avocado. Until recently Panera’s used to have an amazing chicken avocado Cobb salad–it’s too bad they seem to have replaced it with something else.

supposedly guacamole has anti-oxdants’

i mix guac, fresh home grown tomatoes garlic salt black pepper

gwacka what? No idea what this is and wlil stick to IRISH POTATO 🤷

You are missing out on deliciousness! My husband will not go near guacamole or an avocado so I only get it when we eat out. I remember one episode of “Good Eats”, Alton Brown tried to sell us on a recipe for cake icing made from avocado; he is a wild and crazy guy. 😛

Oh AVOCADOS… I see them in the shops but they are too expensive for me and also I cannot eat many fruits etc any more… My current craze is sweet potatoes. They sell them here on special from time to time and seeing these HUGE things at 29 cents got too much for me. . googled them and realised that when I am very unwell if I am managing to eat them am being fed… Now I am totally addicted.

My diet is very limited now but I do enjoy what I can eat

I thought the avocado thing was all hype for a long time. (I grew up in a house where everything we ate was some shade of brown.)

Then 2-3 years ago I tasted one. Now I’m making up for lost time. It’s like butter, but better. 😃

It’s also my most successful baby food. They may have been meh about other stuff, but they’ll eat avocado.

I like Chipotle’s guacamole.

This summer we noticed a distinct downturn in the quality of avocados we could get, so our guac hasn’t been up to par…

We use California avocados, garlic powder, cumin, onions and tomatoes. (Jalapenos give me the hiccups, so they are banned!) Anything more and it’s not guacamole anymore!

Man do I miss living in Hawaii.

I had cilantro, Serrano peppers, tomatoes and avocados growing in my backyard.

Can’t get any fresher than having all the primary ingredients in your backyard.

Well put.

Kinda like chili. There’s all manner of chili with beans or other veggies, white chicken “chili,” vegetarian “chili,” “chili” served on spaghetti (which, while delicious, is no longer chili), and so on.

I have a great chicken “chili” recipe, but I call it “chicken poblano stew,” as it most certainly is not chili.

My wife is Dominican. Dominicans don’t bother with these complicated Mexican recipes. Two slices of slightly toasted bread and stuff slices of fresh, ripe avocado inside… And enjoy. That’s it. :D. Of course the avocados they get are also the size of a football for 50 cents…
