BAD MOVE: The House Appropriations Committee just voted to block the Dubai ports deal by a whopping 62-2 margin. I’ve come to believe that the deal isn’t a threat, though I grant that reasonable people disagree with me. But I can’t help but think that this vote isn’t driven by reasonable concerns as much as political panic.

That also makes me wonder – as discussed in this podcast interview with Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Stewart Baker – whether (1) This isn’t really backlash stemming from the Cartoon Wars “tipping point” effect; and (2) Whether that wasn’t the intent all along, to divide us from Arab/Muslim allies.

Perhaps it won’t matter, and the UAE will just suck it up, attribute it to politics, and move on. Perhaps they’ll still cut a reasonable deal. But just possibly, we’re being had. The White House, whose handling of this whole matter has been deeply bumbling and inept, deserves its (sizable) share of the blame, but I wish that everyone else would take a deep breath and think harder. At least, if it’s really port security they’re worried about, there’s a lot more reason for concern than the Dubai deal.

I don’t know, but I’m very unhappy with how this is going, and this lopsided vote has made me unhappier.

Another sterling example of letting the Dems set the agenda and define what the situation is, the public buys it, and the GOP House members jump on the panic wagon. Goes to show that the only thing any of them are interested in is reelecting their own sorry selves. A pox on all their houses.

I for one am glad. its a little bit fun to watch the republicans and the administration start to fall apart.

I agree! Doesn’t it even bother them that Communist China has been running some west coast ports since the Clinton era? There was never a word said about that, at the time. I guess it makes a difference whos in office.

I first learned of Dubai when watching a show about where all the poshest people from Europe live, everyone owns a home in Dubai. I looked it up, and sure enough Dubai is fantanstic. Probably the most modern city on earth. Us in America tend to think of a country in the Islamic world as being war torn, but Dubai is doing everthing right. When I heard about the ‘scandel’ I was really confused. Then I got angry. Everyone in the world (except us) knows how modern Dubai is, and we look like bigots because it is a predominetly muslim country.

I also understand why they recognized the Taliban as the official govt in Afganistan. Would you want to be shooting off at the mouth about how bad your nieghbor is when you have very expensive property that they could easily blow up? They were protecting their investments and their people, and we can’t blame them for that.

I think we should have let Dubai run our ports. Things would probably improve. Those people know how to run successful businesses.
